I have so many bookmarks from authors but will still pick up a piece of paper, postcard, Bill, whatever is handy at the time.

I use a loser lottery ticket - my husband always has one or two of those laying around so I am never out of bookmarks!
one of my hobbies is making bookmarkers with this app I have. I have umpteen of them, photo ones, I print them out on photo paper, then glue onto construction paper then laminate them
Bill wrote: "I've attached pictures of my bookmarks.. :0) http://bill-booksbooksbooks.blogspot...."Hi Bill. What a great blog! When I have some time I am going to read through a few of your old posts...they look very interesting. Great bookmarks you have as well and, if I am ever in Courtenay, I am going to visit your favorite bookstore just so I can pinch one of their fabulous bookmarks! (Oh...I might buy a book there just to be nice.)
I use just about any piece of paper I find (never fold the corner of the book's pages) but I also have several bookmarks that I have gotten from friends or on travels. I have two from Asia but they are two pretty and too impractical to actually use. One is made of cloth and is fairly thick and has two coins attached to the end, the other, from Laos, is also cloth and has a paper and cloth figure on the front — I think these will stay in their plastic wraps to just look at rather than actually use.
Jamie Lynn wrote: "My dad used to grab a Kleenex for a bookmark LOL!"Have to say that I've caught myself doing that as well. And I love the idea of an index card, particularly in reading nonfiction!
Theresa wrote: "That sounds very creative Leisa and of course they will be unique too."I have this scrapbooking program I got atsples several years ago for $12.99, I can also make cards, tshirt designs and of course bookmarkers and scrapbook pages with it.
I am not ashamed to say I have a small collection of bookmarks, including one I have bought for my two year old for when he starts to read which has penguins on, his obsession. I even have one made entirely of beads, which my Mum made me for Christmas last year :') I HATE when people fold corners or put a book down, open, flat, and spine bent! All of my books, if the spine is intact when I buy it, stay that way!
My Godfather used to volunteer at a local mobile library, returning books for the less mobile. He used to find all sorts of things left as bookmarks. Once was a 10 pound note, which he donated to charity, but the funniest thing was a cooked piece of streaky bacon. I thought this was too precious not to share, and no, he didn't eat it.
Once I pasted all these fortunes from Chinese fortune cookies onto an index card and covered it with book tape. That was a nice bookmark.
Kay wrote: "I prefer something plastic or rigid, so I use gift cards, I D passes & I will make bookmarks out of interesting stamps from letters or packages. I use a laminator at work or arrange between 2 piece..."Plastic doesn't work for me because most have smooth surfaces and slip out.
My favourite thing to use as bookmarks are mat surfaced business cards. I like white ones with mat surfaces (for good grip) and not much elaborate writing on them. They are just the right size and I can mark the place on the page that I finished on by setting an edge against the line. People think I am really interested in them because I am always eager to take as many business cards as they are willing to hand out. LOL.

I use a postcard of sunset over Port Douglas, North Queensland.....my spiritual home. *sigh* (homesick)But I have cross-stitched all my bookworm friends their own bookmarks with their names on them.
Nice place to dream about on your postcard. But I would need lots of postcards because I read about 3 books simultaneously. And I want to get a brand new bookmark when the old one gets a little worn from use.
I use colored plastic stickies. They stay on the page where I left off but do not mark the page or tear it.
Cynthia wrote: "I use colored plastic stickies. They stay on the page where I left off but do not mark the page or tear it."Good idea. Good for marking the exact line where you left off also.
I pick up those free cardboard bookmarks they leave as promotional items for free near the bookstore counters. Often I cut them up into smaller sizes because I don't like my bookmarks being longer than the book. The edges bend and it becomes not very usable otherwise.
I have 2 bookmarks that are my very favorite. One is a bookmark my daughter-in-law made, and laminated, of my 2 granddaughers. The other one is one that my granddaughter made herself and had laminated. Otherwise I usually use anything I can get my hands on quickly, a postcard, receipt, sticky note, etc.
I collect bookmarks so will change every time I change books. I especially like the ones the schools will include with picture packages. I have a lot of those from friends and family. And the ones included with sports picture packages that look like tickets.
A thousand, Linda! They get lost. I find them everywhere when I start cleaning, but when I want to read a book I have to search to find one.
Linda wrote: "I have over a thousand bookmarks ... I use anyone of them"I make all my own pretty well and must have thousands. I read several books simultaneously and use several at a time.
Janet wrote: "A thousand, Linda! They get lost. I find them everywhere when I start cleaning, but when I want to read a book I have to search to find one."I keep pottery pieces full of them. I place them all round my reading room/library for decoration. People are always giving me 'stuff' to see if I can make bookmarks. Keeps my hands busy :-)

I do the same thing! :-)
Since I use used ticket stubbs from football games as my bookmarks, I don't think I'll try for saving 1,000! Even 100 would be a lot.
Ron wrote: "Since I use used ticket stubs from football games as my bookmarks, I don't think I'll try for saving 1,000! Even 100 would be a lot."1000 American (or European) football games! Watching them out at the game is much better than sitting through a TV game. I go for the atmosphere and the enjoyment of being out there with friends and family.
Janet wrote: "A thousand, Linda! They get lost. I find them everywhere when I start cleaning, but when I want to read a book I have to search to find one."I keep all bookmarks in the books I read and I'm going to add them to my collection. So all the books in my bookshelves have a bookmark in them (over 600 books). I pass a lot of books on to other people or to the public library, but I keep the bookmarks of the ones I give away unless the person likes it or asks me for it.
This morning on my way to work I lost one again. Used a fresh one of those Costa coffee stirring wooden things. Worked beautifully.

Just about anything within reach. Right now my electric bill has the honor. I have a nice little collection of bookmarks on my bookshelf, too, yet they rarely get used.
Janet wrote: "This morning on my way to work I lost one again. Used a fresh one of those Costa coffee stirring wooden things. Worked beautifully."That's great. Surprising what a reader will turn into a bookmark when one is needed on the spot.

And I thought I was the only one who read two to three books at a time. (I've also been known to write two or three at a time. Maybe that was sharing too much.)
I am one of those horrible people that dogears their pages. I have also been known to read up to 6 books at a time. By contrast the most I write at a time is 3.
Just found this line of comments and it reminded me that right now I'm using a word index card with notes about the books that I hope to read in the future! Especially those for some challenges I'm doing

Shame on you two. LOL.
I picked up some free bookmarks they have to give away at bookstore and library counters and carefully cut them in half lengthwise. They are too long otherwise; the perfect size now. And I don't have to worry about losing them because I have twice as many as I would usually.
I have used a piece of paper where someone gave me a phone number or email address.Just yesterday I was looking through some books trying to find the phone number of a friend, LOL.
For the last 3 years, I've been attending a book fair called the Big Bad Wolf fair. They give you free bookmarks with every purchase, I have more than 10 bookmarks.http://i.imgur.com/p0zulJ9.jpg
The Big Bad Wolf bookmarks are very nice. I think they use these bookmarks as advertising material of the things printed on them.
Janet wrote: "The Big Bad Wolf bookmarks are very nice. I think they use these bookmarks as advertising material of the things printed on them."Right, that's not uncommon. Some publishers also put out bookmarks to match a book's jacket. I have bought books where the seller includes their own ad as a bookmark, and those are good as well.
I have a funny thing for bookmarks, in the sense that once I start reading a book I like to stay with the same one all the way through to the end.
