Laurel, your post-back was like a letter. How sweet :)

I started reading to my kids, not only for their educational benefit, and hopefully a love for books; but for selfish reasons as well. I wanted to discuss books with SOMEONE! Hubby doesn't read and just doesn't "get it"; whereas, me and the kids could sit in the bookstore or library all day.

Hi Denisa! Hope you had a good weekend- cold and rainy here, but finally a little sun today. There is still some ice in some of my flower beds, but the **** dandelions are already coming up!

It took a while to figure how how to get the books like that in the comment box, and sometimes, covers just do not show up when you select them. I love how they look like that, don't you? It makes me want to rush out and buy them all, RIGHT NOW!

What are you reading? I love having a corner to stash stuff, and having people visit. Come back soon, and I will visit you, too. Have a good day.

I but way too many books as it is lol...if the become any more inviting then they already are I am in trouble... lol...
I just finished up Where You Can Find Me by Sheri Joseph and now I have a stack to pick through and find another one..
I generally pop in all the corners at least once a week and sometimes more often...I can be a pest I guess...
hope your day was off to a wonderful start on your week...

message 60: by Laurel (new)

Laurel (goodreadscomboddy_l) | 621 comments It was... All my days are "off days"' , since I am retired! I have been outside digging dandelions out of my garden. Tulips and hyacinths are starting to come up, and there are the xxxx dandelions, with a whole bunch of leaves already. It was sunny, but still quite cold- ice still melting on our big pond. Enjoy choosing your next book!

So many of my books are serious, or fact driven, or complex plots. It is nice to have a smooth and relaxing read. Do you have any suggestions that are fun? I have not ready many "cozy" type mysteries, either.

Hope you are well. The Murderous Urges of Ordinary Women by Lois Meltzer

It was one of our sons' favourites. Wish I had a loonie for every batch I have made. I could buy a whole pile of new books! Enjoying the s shortcake with a good cup of Twinings tea.

Last year she had me make one and told my son she "DID this" just for him... he knew it my recipe...he asked her if she learned how or? she told him I did it for you meaning... I had your mom make one for me for you. lol... we still laugh about that one... she didn't lie...

Yes, I do. It's Pamela's Corner. Of what I know of the family history, it's sure to be interesting!! I bought a fictional account of Eleanor of Acquitaine called Beloved Enemy: The Passions of Eleanor of Acquitane. Have you read it? I didn't know of these people until I tracked my family history back to them. Now, I find them interesting of course. Eleanor interests me the most. I heard that she loved King Arthur stories which has also been a passion of mine.

No, I have to read that one. My knowledge of that period is limited. My reading really begins in earnest with the Tudors. I admire Eleanor. I think of Katherine Hepburn when Eleanor's name is mentioned, in that role, starring opposite Peter O'toole, in A Lion in Winter. I am a movie freak, too. I will check out the book. Thanks for visiting my corner. I am sure I will find lots of interesting items to add to my TBR list, in your corner.

That sounds familiar-you just make it. I appreciate you taking the time to send it...I will leave you a piece in your corner when I make it. We get beautiful fruit from the Niagara escarpment from June through September. The NE. is also famous now for many kinds of wine, particularly ice wine, which will be a wonderful pairing with the cobbler. It is the best fruit growing area in Canada, other than the Okanogan Valley in B.C. No citrus in Canada, all imported. Thanks again.

message 82: by DENISA (new)

DENISA HOWE | 1697 comments I got this recipe from Edna Lewis. you can play with it as you like. Some people do not like a lot of butter but we do..

The pie crust (really buttery)
Use a 8 inch pie pan that is 2 inches deep.
About 2 cups of all purpose flour
Dash of salt
1 ½ sticks or 12 tablespoons of chilled butter chunked into small pieces
¼ cup of ice water.
In a mixing bowl combine flour, salt and butter blend with your fingers until it is like cornmeal. Add the ice water and mix quickly and then you will need to shape it in a ball. Afterwards wrap it up in wax paper and place in ice box for 30 minutes. The dough needs to rest.
Next: you need 1 cup of sugar and 7 large peaches and ¾ cups of unsalted butter or
1 ½ sticks.
1. Roll out half the pie dough, and press into pie dish. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of sugar and refrigerate.
2. Roll out the remainder of the pie dough, and cut into 8 strips for a lattice top. Lay the strips between wax paper and refrigerate. You do not have to do lattice unless you want to.
3. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
4. Peel and slice the peaches. Sprinkle half of the remaining sugar over the pie crust, and lay the sliced peaches in the pie plate. Mound the last few slices in the center. Sprinkle the rest of the sugar over the fruit and dot with thin slices of butter. Weave the pastry strips over the fruit, four going one way and four the other. Moisten the rim of the pie with cold water, and press the strips down to seal.
5. Set the cobbler on the middle rack of the oven, and bake for 10 minutes. Lower the heat to 425 degrees F, and bake for another 35 minutes. Let the cobbler cool for about 30 minutes before serving.
