I'm not sure, some of the other families in Luebeck have leading men who spend their time down the club and at the theatre. The Buddenbrooks have a particular work ethic I feel (even by Northern standards).

Tony is complicated but her most consistent trait is that she thrives on the luxurious life style which befits the status of her family. She was never going to be satisfied being ordinary and getting by. Tom is her brother and he is also the person who comes closest to sharing her ideals. Although he says she should have stayed in Munich, he goes along with her decision because he is as lonely as she is. They compliment each other in a way that is both beneficial and destructive.
