SOLVED: The book was Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli

I read this book as a kid, and I can't remember the name, though I think the boy's name is in the title, and it begins with a "J."

I can remember the book being from the perspective of another child telling about his experiences watching this boy. The boy in question was capable of running really quickly, solving any knot, and other traits.

Sorry, but I can't remember more than that at the moment.

I know this is an old thread, but I'm guessing the movie Stephanie[octavian] remembers is The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, with a young Kurt Russell (or the TV movie remake). Doesn't appear to be based on Maniac Magee, though.
