Latoya | 31 comments Happy New Year everyone. January 1st is also my anniversary - 12 years, Lord how time flies.
Anyway, I am searching through my books looking for something to read and I finally decide to jump in and try Outlander. Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon
Want to celebrate by starting a great romance (well at least according to most of the reviews). Keeping my fingers crossed.
(And no I will not be spending my anniversary reading a book, in case you were wondering).

Samantha | 419 comments I haven't been reading much but I started Kushiel's Dart (Phèdre's Trilogy, #1) by Jacqueline Carey . It's a little flowery for me right now. I'm hoping that I enjoy it.

message 4907: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments It took me 3 tries and pushing through over 20% but I ended up enjoying Kushiel's Dart.

message 4908: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 419 comments That's what everyone keep telling me. I just got to stick with it. I'm not completely bored with it so that's a good thing.

message 4909: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) First read of 2014 - Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell Super sweet, although it didn't make me gush as hard as I did for Eleanor & Park.

message 4910: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Ohh man I loved Fangfirl :) Nothing tops Eleanor & Park.

I started Kaleidoscope (Colorado Mountain, #6) by Kristen Ashley and I love it! I know lots of people are not fans of KA but there is just something about this story that i'm really enjoying. Some parts irk me, KA's normal Alpha ways sometimes make me roll my eyes but I really like Emme.

message 4913: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I finished Northern Star by Ethan Day . Ethan Day once again didn't disappoint.

I'm really not sure what book to read next. I'm still on a m/m kick. Just not sure what to read.

message 4914: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I finished Kaleidoscope (Colorado Mountain, #6) by Kristen Ashley and I loved parts but I also felt like there was some moments that made me pissed.

Now I have to figure out what to read next...

message 4915: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I decided to read Embracing Need (Wild R Farm, #3) by Silvia Violet . I'm sticking with my m/m mood and I stuck with my TBR list...sort of.

Marcella, did you read Too Stupid to Live (Romancelandia #1) by Anne Tenino already? It's my new fav book to pimp out. :P

message 4917: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Speaking of m/m I read Criss Cross (PsyCop, #2) by Jordan Castillo Price . It was okay. I like Victor but the case aspect was only so-so and I haven't been pulled into his relationship the way I was with the Cut & Run series. So not sure if I'm continuing.

Think I'll go back to Disillusionists.

message 4918: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Tellulah, I find the focus to be on the characters in that series. ##1 and 2 are just okay, if you read 2 you should just go ahead and read 3 -- 4 and on are just so good. But not everyone has the same reaction to characters. :)

Okay. I liked Victor enough so if it gets more character focused, I'll keep with it for another book. :)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I'm sure no one's going to believe me, but I actually get tired sometimes of being the lone picky bitch and not loving a book everyone else loved.

Just finished Too Stupid to Live (Romancelandia #1) by Anne Tenino and thought it was only okay. The humor was awesome, but I felt like it was one running sex scene after another with only a little bit of story sandwiched in between (if it had been a shorter book, I would have been okay with it, but it started to drag), and I didn't like the amount of (view spoiler). I just felt like there wasn't much story outside of Sam being insecure and Ian having to convince him otherwise. I was hoping to learn more about the characters. Sam's ex-relationship issues with Marley came to mention so late in the book that I didn't care by that point.

message 4922: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments You have me laughing at all the (view spoiler)

I couldn't sleep last night so in the wee hours I started The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd and so far it's good. The topic is going to be very emotional but I liked Sue Monk Kidds other books.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments That looks like it could be good, Leea.

About TSTL. I feel like a wuss because the (view spoiler)

Anyway, I feel like I'm crawling out of a reading hole. I realized while looking at my December books that I only read 6 books in December, which is actually not abnormal for people reading in general, but I usually read about 15 books a month, so I've really dropped back on reading.

I also finished Meet Me at the River by Nina de Gramont last night and had mixed feelings. The story was quietly beautiful (the author has definite writing talent), but written in a style which isn't really my thing, because I don't generally get into a "this is how today went, then this is how tomorrow went" style of writing (very much reminiscent of Shiver or A Certain Slant of Light). But the ending made me cry unexpectedly because of how beautiful and profound it was, so I'm struggling with how to rate. Do I rate high because I loved the ending, or rate low because the book was so melancholy and floating for so long?

message 4924: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Hahah @ the spoiler. That had me giggling. I really liked the humor with TSTL and enjoyed the book a lot but I can see why you didn't like some of those things you mentioned in your review, Stacia.

I feel you about the reading hole. I noticed in the latter part of 2013, I slowed down a lot and I think it was mainly due to my weekly reading ruts where I'd take a break for a day or two. In 2012, I read 216 and in 2013 I only read 187. I set a goal for myself this year to read 180 and now, I'm a bit nervous b/c these ruts really kill my reading speed. LOL

And of course, I don't have a clue what to read next. I finished Watermelon (Walsh Family, #1) by Marian Keyes and it wasn't that great :(

message 4925: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Meet me at the River looks good. I'm more of an emotional rater and usually overlook the parts that lack especially if it's a good book.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I like that the book is titled watermelon though!

I have a lot of arcs that I am not in the mood to read, which sucks.

Will probably try to go back to The Sharpest Blade (Shadow Reader, #3) by Sandy Williams

message 4928: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I need to read the Shadow Reader series... I still haven't read the first book.

TSTL has some funny moments! That part also made me uncomfortable but mostly I was laughing at all the (view spoiler)

Also, so far The Invention of Wings is really good. Alternating POV's between Sarah and Hetty. I'd also forgotten how much I like Kidd's writing.

Oooh, Kay! I've had Within Reach on my OverDrive app forever and just haven't read it. Now that I know you adored it I'll give it a whirl. We tend to like the same stuff when it comes to good ole romance novels.

I'm currently reading Royal Flush (Her Royal Spyness Mysteries, #3) by Rhys Bowen and am dying to read Shelter Mountain (Virgin River, #2) by Robyn Carr as I am now quite the Robyn Carr fan!

message 4932: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Maybe I'm just a weirdo, lmao, but all that stuff just added to the laughter. I liked those weird little quirks, like the (view spoiler). Totally not my thing, and I laughed and wrinkled my nose, but I also loved that the author wasn't afraid to give him a veerrrry interesting fetish, lol. I'll say I'll probably not read another one like that.

And I do see what you were saying about the not too much more to the story other than Ian having to overcome his hang up about relationships and Sam his low self-esteem. I totally see how that may bug some, but I suppose for me it was the strength. It was nice that the book was just about two people falling in love slowly, rather than delving into all sorts of other issues. It was just easy and sweet.

So, I guess on this one we were opposite, haha. What annoyed you was what made it unique and refreshing to me.

I always hate when I don't like books that you guys are loving too, so I get it. That's how I felt when we all buddy read that viking book, haha.

I hope you like it, Jen. The emotions were very realistic to me and I really enjoyed it. Plus, there were some sexy scenes in there too ;)

message 4934: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Jen, I love the Her Royal Spyness mysteries... hope you do, too!

Did anyone else notice that Amazon has this notice on some Kindle books that if you've already purchased the print copy from Amazon, you get a reduced price on the book - from free to $2.99, like the $2.99 for Too Stupid To Live? Is this new or did I miss it before?

Stuck trying to figure out my next book... any recommendations? I haven't read Too Stupid to Live (Romancelandia #1) by Anne Tenino , but I'm not sure I want to spend $7.99 on it, and it's not available at my library.

What are your most anticipated books for 2014?

message 4935: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments its new Lori...its called matchbook I think

the publishers have to opt in, and they set the price for the ebook

message 4939: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments It isn't all books only certain ones. There is a special link that tells you which qualify. I have been buying books from amazon since 2002 and onmy a handful qualified - none of which I wanted. :)

message 4940: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments huh, i'm curious. do you know where the link is?

message 4942: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

message 4943: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I only really started buying from Amazon when I bought my first Kindle...before that I tended to use Fispond. Not as quick but free shipping on every order regardless of value and prices were about the same.

I checked the link and I have 0 books I can get. lol...would have been nice to get that book on the history of the Spitfire for Kindle, but wasn't to be.

message 4945: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments HAHA!!! I figured it could grab it on my kindle and maybe it would inspire me.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments You were looking for a historical book in the other group's challenge. You could use that as your adult pick?

Finished One & Only (Canton, #1) by Viv Daniels and it was okay.

About halfway through Natural Law (Nature of Desire, #2) by Joey W. Hill and I'm really liking it so far. I hope the second half is as good.

Debating whether to start The Troop by Nick Cutter or No One Else Can Have You by Kathleen Hale next.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Hi are you all holding up with the weather (in the US -midwest? is it affecting other areas?) We are almost snowed in and school and work has been called off for tomorrow. Which is wonderful since at the last minute I took off last week from work. It has been a good time to do nothing. My house is still a mess, but I needed a break.

message 4948: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments My job never ever calls off work, not once since we started it. We're only supposed to average about a foot, which is still a lot but we've seen more than that before.

It's just going to be freezing tomorrow. At night I think we're gonna be around 30 below. (or so I hear, could be an exaggeration, lol.)

message 4949: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I hope everyone is having a good weekend. I finished What a Girl Wants by Selena Robins Please Don't Stop the Music by Jane Lovering Katy Carter Wants a Hero by Ruth Saberton which were all okay but nothing great.

I'm off to search for my next read.
