D.G. I feel you, Angie. I think there are better ways to introduce new characters than having them take over other people's books!

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments When it's done well I'm OK with it...but it needs to blend in with the story that's being told. It really annoys me when characters are just parachuted into a story for no apparent reason.

I do agree, Ian, and I do think it can be well done. It just hasn't been in a few books I've read recently.

Case in point...a major couple just got a novella and had a bit of a crisis. She turns to a friend who was never even in her own book (but it just so happens this 'friend's' book is next in the series.) During this crisis of hers, her best friend from the original book never even popped into her head! I just don't get it.

I thought I was the only person that used the term parachuted in. Ha ha!

message 4855: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I felt that way with Lover At Last. I thought I was reading 3 separate books because they all seemed detached from Blay and Qhuinn's story. I didn't like that aspect of the book...ruined is a more accurate term actually.

message 4856: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Hi Marcella :)

I finished And One Last Thing ... by Molly Harper and It was very funny but with a good message. I just love Harpers writing!

No clue what to read next... I want something all encompassing good. Those books are hard to find. Ha!

message 4857: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Hi Leea! Hope you had a Merry Christmas.

If you want something a little out of left field...I really loved Down and Out in Beverly Heels. If you look at the cover and the synopsis you'll draw a bunch of conclusions. They will be wrong. When I read it, I was expecting to be killing time. I wasn't expecting a 5 Star book.

Down and Out in Beverly Heels by Kathryn Leigh Scott

Another one which is kind of chick-lit / journey of discovery...maybe a little sad is The Secret of Everything...I can't read two Barbara O'Neal books in a row, but every now and then they are kind of awesome.

The Secret of Everything by Barbara O'Neal

And just because I'm reading her latest book, Black Arts and loving it...Skinwalker by Faith Hunter is awesome sauce! Not all that original but great fun.

Skinwalker (Jane Yellowrock, #1) by Faith Hunter

...now three reciprocal recommendations please.

message 4859: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Oh...I notice you have My Life as a White Trash Zombie on your TBR. That book is a hoot...but if you do audiobooks go for that. Allison Mclemore has a voice like dripping southern honey.

message 4860: by Leea, Escape Artist (last edited Dec 29, 2013 11:08PM) (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Ahhh the pressure... Okay!

Aftertime (Aftertime, #1) by Sophie Littlefield - I was just recommending this book to my husband because I just loved it! I enjoyed how the female lead was not perfect, she had loads of issues and problems but you cannot help but connect with her. That and it's set in N. California so that's just creepy for multiple reasons.

Have you read Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon , I know it's huge and massive but it's beyond all encoupassing and amazing! Ha!

I'm not a huge Chick lit reader but I read Talk Me Down (Tumble Creek, #1) by Victoria Dahl a few years ago and it was like my introduction to funny, smart, and sexy romance books.

Okay, hope this passed the test! Yikes!

message 4861: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I choose Aftertime...I would read Outlander except I'm 45...I don't know if my remaining life span is long enough to finish it.

message 4862: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments It's really good!! My husband is finally having time to read and he just finished Angelfall & went right into World After. He's been asking me for more book suggestions, he might read after time next too.

message 4863: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Btw thanks Ian for the book suggestions. Much appreciated. I'll decide what to read in the morning. Night!!

message 4864: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Sadly I've never done an audio book. I know... I know. White trash zombie is already on my ready. May choose that next.

message 4865: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Leea wrote: "Sadly I've never done an audio book. I know... I know. White trash zombie is already on my ready. May choose that next."

I think you need the right circumstances for an audiobook to work. You need time alone when your mind is in a passive zone. If you spend a lot of time driving that's about the ideal. Also being on the treadmill or doing housework are a pretty good fit for audiobooks.

I can't listen to them in bed but I can read in bed.

message 4866: by Kay (last edited Dec 30, 2013 09:01AM) (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I re-read Unsticky by Sarra Manning over the weekend and I loved it just as much the 2nd time.

I also read Remember When (Remember Trilogy, #1) by T. Torrest (Angie...I finally read it!) and it was fun and cute.

I'm off to look for a another contemporary book to read...I just have to filter all the New Adults that seem to bombard all my searches.

message 4867: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I finally got approved for several of the books i've been waiting for on Netgalley... so i'm going to start To Tempt a Viking (Forbidden Vikings, #2) by Michelle Willingham . I've been waiting for this book for awhile. Can't wait!

Took the boys to see The Hobbit movie today - it was amazing! When someones head was cut off I put my arms around my oldest (he's very sensitive) and said "It's okay Ethan." He told me, "It's okay mom, i'll get over it." Well okay!

message 4868: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Hahaha, you both love and hate when they get older, lol.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I forgot that I had that book, Leea. I wish I could start it with you but I can't right now.

message 4870: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I am starting Black Dog by Rachel Neumeier -- it is an arc and her other books have gotten really strong reviews although she is not widely known. So far this is really good.

message 4871: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Started Northern Star by Ethan Day . I haven't been able to read anything but m/m these days. Not sure what the heck is up with that.

message 4872: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments if you liked Molly Harper, you could try A Little Night Magic has the same kind of snarky humor that I liked in Harper's stuff - the audiobook is actually narrated by the same person, which is how I found it

message 4873: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I bought that audio book on your and Ian's rec. The e-book price also dropped today to about $6.

message 4874: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments and book 2 comes out end of January - yay!!

message 4875: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I didn't realize it was a series, cool.

So anyone have new years reading resolutions?

message 4876: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments i didn't realize either until recently - I think the main character in bk 2 is one of the friends in bk 1 (but not sure)

reading resolutions...try to reduce Mt TBR a bit...haha

message 4877: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) *waving* - Hi all, sorry, I just got so consumed by the new job, long hours, and then the whole Holiday season thing. Hope ALL of you have a very Merry Christmas, happy Hanukkah, cheerful Kwanza, and so on... I did.

Have been reading through the Draycott Abbey series by Christina Skye, starting with Hour of the Rose by Christina Skye . It's PNR, but in the sense of ghosts, ESP and extra-sensory "gifts", and past lives/reincarnation. Sexy, suspenseful, and fun! The book cover showing here is cheesy, but there is a Kindle version that's much hotter. Books were written starting in the 1990s, so the older covers reflect that. Some blasts-from-the-past when world events or people-in-the-news were mentioned.

Really behind in my book reviews again... Saw that ya'll had read Ashes to Ashes (Experiment in Terror, #8) by Karina Halle , and I'd actually forgotten that it was coming out! Can you believe that? So glad that I caught your notices and reviews! That's the problem with independent authors - I can't pre-order and so I sometimes forget about the release dates. But I LOVED having Dex and Perry back together... really creepy book cover, too! Some of the book I wasn't so hot on (the whole Rebecca storyline just fizzled for me).

Anyway, my goal over the next couple of days is to get my reviews updated for this year! I got my updates in for the JAMMF challenge in the Outlander group!

message 4878: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I loved that book too Lori.

My goal is to read more of what I want and much less arcs -- although I have 5 scheduled for January, 9 for February and others for the rest of the year!

message 4879: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I need to stop one-clicking on my auto approves for ARCs...haha

message 4880: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Yep, I hear you Dee and Regina about the ARCs... If I don't read and review some of them for Netgalley, I'll probably get cut off - LOL!

I think it's probably a good New Year's resolution for me, too... fewer ARCs and more book from my TBR and Gotta Read list.

message 4881: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Dee wrote: "and book 2 comes out end of January - yay!!"

Oh my...for ages I kept looking for more books by her but I'd lost hope and gave up. I really enjoyed A Little Night Magic.

What do you think is going on with the rating? 3.41 seems on the low side. I'm not really sure, it's been a long time since I read it but when I see a rating like that I always wonder what's going on...I see dozens of books that really deserve a rating like this and get high 4s.

message 4882: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Dunno - I typically don't look at overall rating - I look more at what friends have it

message 4883: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Me too. I rarely look.

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments My goal for 2014 is to read books exclusively from my TBR list. Not sure if it will work out but I'm sure going to try. I need to make a dent in that thing. It's huge!

LOL TBR lists can be so overwhelming!

Another one of my goals is to stop falling into the 'New Adult' trap. The blurbs are so good, but I have found very few NA books that I absolutely love!

Couldn't agree more!!

message 4888: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Just got back from a wonderfully lazy week in Mexico with lots of reading done. Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles #1) by Ilona Andrews was okay. But then again, I thought that about the first Magic book so maybe it will improve book by book. DNF'd The Duke of Uranium (Jak Jinnaka, #1) by John Barnes because I didn't feel like wading through the lingo. Wish I'd DNF'd Crash into You (Pushing the Limits, #3) by Katie McGarry I'm not sure what eternally optimistic (deluded) gene keeps me reading these broken NA stories. Broken girls and bad boys but oh their hearts of gold. Just stab me in the eye. The Cairo Affair by Olen Steinhauer was a pretty good political thriller. Could have used a good edit down though. Mind Games (The Disillusionists Trilogy, #1) by Carolyn Crane I really liked. I realized I'd read it a couple years ago but couldn't remember how I felt about it. Will def be continuing with the series.

But the big winner - no shock - was my enormous love of Too Stupid to Live (Romancelandia #1) by Anne Tenino One of the all-time best romances I've ever read!! Hugs to all who pimped this read!

I really love the way Carolyn Crane gets into the heads of her characters. It's almost like the book is being written by a hypochondriac ... same with her current Associates series, she somehow gets inside her characters.

She really nailed it. I can't wait to see where the series goes.

message 4891: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) A Little Night Magic looks good...

If I didn't catch all the books I read between Oct and Dec 31, oh well. Did my best to get at least a rating and a few lines of a review in for everything. I probably missed one or two, especially Netgalley books.

I'm so glad you loved it! That book is still on my mind. It was amazing! Can't wait to see where this series goes.

message 4894: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Happy New Year True Love Members!

I'm drinking bubble and writing reviews = dangerous combo :)

I finished To Tempt a Viking (Forbidden Vikings, #2) by Michelle Willingham and it was good but I liked the first book better. I do wonder if Brannon will get a book or who will be the lead in the next book?

Now i'm going to start another Molly Harper book because she just fits my mood these days... Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs (Jane Jameson, #1) by Molly Harper Can't wait!

message 4895: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments My New Years resolution is just going to be finding time to read and not feeling overwhelmed by ARCs. I'm such an emotional reader, I pick book based on my mood at the time so having a strict schedule sometimes doesn't work for me. Excluded are buddy reads, those don't have the same feeling. Love buddy reads!

message 4896: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Happy New Year everyone! My reading goal this year is to try and read at least a few books outside of romance.

Right now, I'm reading Watermelon (Walsh Family, #1) by Marian Keyes

message 4897: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Happy New Year!! I was about to say you are up early Kay (as I just woke up) but then I looked at the time and realized it is a normal hour to be up in Cali. :)

I also just started reading Dangerous Women by George R.R. Martin . I am only reading the Jim Butcher, Diana Gabaldon, GRRM, Diana Rowland, and Brandon Sanderson stories. And maybe others.

message 4898: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I'm usually awake 2 hours earlier so today was like sleeping in :) We didn't do anything last night except watch the ball drop at home and celebrate with the kids at 9pm (east coast time) with some sparklers in the backyard.
