Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments It's too bad that all of Mead's series have completely different worlds and lore. It would be fun to see character cameos and cross-overs between series, like Georgina and Sydney have some sort of random run in at a bookstore, or Adrian and Dorian meet up somewhere and exchange some witty quips (although in what capacity, I'd have no idea!).

I could see it now...

Rose : What the hell just ran past us?

Dimitri : Looked like a fox to me. *looks around* A huge fox. At least I thought I saw a fox. It was probably much too big. Maybe it was some sort of wolf. Where did it go?

*Eugenie walks up : Did you happen to see a man in a vet coat run by?

Dimitri : Nope. Just a huge fox.

*Eugenie swears under her breath : Tonight's gonna be a bitch. He won't be coming back for a while.

Rose : What?

Eugenie : Nothing. Sorry about that.

I'd like to think that Roman (view spoiler)

I didn't finish Covenant. The book wasn't in at my library and I wasn't about to pay for it, and then I forgot all about it. I actually remembered it yesterday morning for some reason and thought "huh, probably not a great sign if I could forget about the final book." I checked and still not at my library but I have no problem you spoiling it for me to tell me what happened, Stacia.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Okay, spoilers for the Sentinel. (view spoiler) Hah @ 2 Seths.

So yeah...the series was pretty much all VA until the end, when it switched to GK. I was so frustrated by the ending, that I don't think I'll be reading any more (new) books by Armentrout, other than finishing Lux because I'm already well into the series.

Oh well, yes, then totally. But it was good of her to plunder more than one series. :P

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments So I read Ivan (Her Russian Protector, #1) by Roxie Rivera . No. Just no. The sex scenes were painful to read. Lots-o-cringe. I should probably pull some terms from my review to add to the cringe-worthy topic.

message 4807: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Ok, the only Mead left for me to read is the Storm Born books. How did you all feel about them. I've heard that the first two are good then they go downhill.

message 4808: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments That's pretty much how i felt. first two good, then I got upset and didn't finish them.

I know others liked them though.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I liked the entire series (all Mead books are fun reads), but it is my least favorite series of hers. My main character love went through a complete personality change over the course of the books, which frustrated the hell out of me (and Wendy too iirc).

I still think it's worth the read because the books are fun and Dorian ends up being hilarious (much like Adrian), but yeah...lots of things going wrong too. Eugenie flip flopped between men far too much. I wanted to shake her repeatedly for going back and forth.

Storm Born/Dark Swan reminds me quite a bit of this series, of which I am starting book 3 of right now, coincidentally. The Sharpest Blade (Shadow Reader, #3) by Sandy Williams

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) I'll probably read it at some point but I won't be bumping any of my current TBRs for it. Stacia, how are you finding that Sharpest Blade series?

message 4813: by Ian (last edited Dec 20, 2013 09:20PM) (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I tend to last longer on a series when each book is about different characters...I read the first four books in the Vampire Academy series and by then I didn't really care anymore. Same with Karen Marie Moning's Fever books. I still have the last book somewhere gathering dust unread.

I kind of wish authors would stop with all these long running series'...very few stories are big enough to be sustained over more than a few books. Honestly, not many stories can support more than 400 pages. Sometimes I get the feeling that an author is just cashing in...I had the distinct impression with the last 4 or 5 Virgin River books that Robyn Carr was just splashing around in the water, not really going anywhere.

I kind of have a question....think about the series' you have read. What were the shark jumping moments?

message 4814: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I think 5 books for most series is abt the max - occasionally you'll get a good long series (like the in death books - but their strength for me is the mystery is the focus)

Definitely my case too with only few exceptions. Somehow either I stop caring about the characters or the author does the thing I hate most because I guess some of them can't keep their characters interesting enough without changing their behaviour and/or forgetting the rules of the world.

message 4816: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Dee wrote: "I think 5 books for most series is abt the max - occasionally you'll get a good long series (like the in death books - but their strength for me is the mystery is the focus)"

I agree totally about 5 books. I find that more than that, and there's serious risk of filler. That said, I think Harry Potter pulled off every single book being wonderful and relevant and I love that Rowling did that.

I'm trying to think of a shark jumping moment. It's funny, I can think of a series like Stray where the female protag did something that made me hate her and yet I kept reading. And I can think of series like Stephanie Laurens' Cynsters where I just got sooo bored reading essentially the same two characters over and over again. Going to think about that shark. I'm sure there's been a few.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I think everyone knows this about me already, but I am not a good series reader when it comes to reading books in a row (I can count on less than two hands the number of series that I read back-to-back because I absolutely had to know what was coming next). So I tend to jump the shark on the majority of my series, which is sad!

Even so, I still prefer series to stand alone books. I love having the option to be able to pick up a book from a continuing series and not have to learn about the characters or world because I know it already. Sometimes, it feels like a chore to pick up a stand-alone book and have to "learn" about the world and characters. It requires a new focus that series books don't require.

I can think of one series that I've read pretty far in and have stalled out on. Glass Houses (The Morganville Vampires, #1) by Rachel Caine
I'm up through book 8 and have liked the series as a whole. The books haven't even gotten boring. But I feel like there hasn't been enough new in every book to make me clamor for more. I will go back to it at some point though.

As for series length, I hate when series start going into 10 plus books territory. My ideal would be between 4 and 7 (maybe 8 if the author is fabulous). Trilogies can be fun, but it seems like so many trilogies I've read fail at wrapping things up correctly and I've wished for another book, so I'm thinking that 4 books is probably a better number than 3 in many cases.

message 4818: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I think it depends on the author and their vision. There has to be a vision. Jim Butcher long ago sketched out 20 books and then a 3 book trilogy ending to his Dresden Files. Each book gets stronger and stronger, more complex and detailed -- I think he is on 13 right now. :) That is what JK Rowling did with HP, she had the story sketched out before she wrote the series. I think it is when the author is just coasting along and coming up with new stories every book that the series can flounder.

Psycop is another really strong long running series.

message 4819: by Leea, Escape Artist (last edited Dec 21, 2013 10:40AM) (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Finished Secret (Elemental, #4) by Brigid Kemmerer and for me this series is a perfect example of an author who is able to take each character and form a new story about them. Even though they're all brothers living under the same roof. It's engaging and we're now at book 4 (with some shorts mixed in) and it's not getting old at all. Plus it's YA with real life issues and not a lot of angst or drama.

next up, Off the Edge (The Associates, #2) by Carolyn Crane . I'm very excited about this book. I really liked the last book.

message 4820: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Oh...the Morganville Vampires! Not really a shark jumping moment but I walked away from that in disgust after that attempted rape in Dead Girls Dance

- copy & paste -

Claire was feeling kind of light headed, in fact she was dizzy, maybe it was the heat. She took another gulp from the bottle, but that just seemed to make her feel nauseous.
As Ian opened the fourth door she said, "I don't feel so good."
Ian smiled and said, "Well that was fast", and shoved her into the room. "I thought I was gonna have to work a little harder, but you're pretty easy."
There were three other guys in the room...

There was something bad out there something worse than four horny, stupid, cruel boys. She felt something brush against her, a hand. One of the boys she didn't know which one, was it Ian? She took it and squeezed.

[to Ian, the guy who drugged her and was going to rape her] "I'm sorry about your nose." she said.

[later] Those boys weren't monsters.

yeah...a guy who drugged her and was going to rape her isn't a monster. Wrong on so many levels. I refuse to read authors who don't see rape as a serious crime and the perpetrators as scum.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Feral Sins was an enjoyable read. :)

Ian, I read that book so long ago that I don't remember. My triggers weren't on high alert back then anyway, not the way they are now, so I can see how I might have read right over that part at the time.

I'm not really sure why she did it. I mean it's not just telling the story, she can't use that as an excuse because she as an author inserted an opinion into the narrative.

What's a beta? I assume I'm a beta personality type...largely because I know I'm generally not apha (although when things hit the fan I think I can become more alpha).

What are the attributes of a beta?

message 4829: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Dec 22, 2013 12:23PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments You are very similar to my husband in some aspects (as based on you two getting similar personality scores) and I call him a beta male with some alpha tendencies. I'm not sure how close/dissimilar you are on every aspect. He's very laidback/whatever on many things but is a natural caregiver/provider type. In 90% of his life he is a beta and doesn't care about having to be in command, but when he needs to get shit done, he knows how to be assertive and has no problems doing it. He rarely gets upset because not a whole lot gets to him, but when he does get upset, it's like a bomb going off. He prefers compromising and talking things out to conflict, but if someone challenges him, he will handle his business. He is a thousand times more offended by someone messing with me than he is with someone messing with him. So if I was in trouble, he'd probably beat the living shit out of that person, even though he'd never start a fight on his own.

message 4830: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Hi everybody! I know I've been lost but lots has happened in the last couple of months!

I got a new job - started last week - in a bigger company so now I won't be able to check GR as often as I could in my old job. I also was out of the country in a family wedding (had lots of fun, there.)

I'm in a mostly PNR/UF mood on audio lately so that's what I've been reading mostly lately. I read the 5 books in the October Daye series almost one after the other.

Leea | 1437 comments I have, Ian and I liked them a lot.

I'm reading How To Run With A Naked Werewolf (Naked Werewolf, #3) by Molly Harper which i'm sure is great but after finishing Off the Edge just seems dull. ha!

message 4841: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I'm reading Faith Hunter's new book, Black Arts which is kind of amazing at the moment. I was kind of annoyed a couple of books ago (view spoiler) That hasn't been resolved but it's not annoying me so much and I'm very happy that some of my favourite characters are back...but I'm nervous that Faith Hunter might be about to kill one off. (@15%)

I'm also reading Beyond Texas. It's not bad, I really should like it. It has the right blend of quirky and oddball characters but I'm not feeling it at the moment.

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments Ugh...I'm really starting to get frustrated with authors practically ignoring the characters in their current book to bring you the characters from their next book! I feel mean saying it, because I know they need to make a living and are trying to drum up interest for their next book, but giving too much page time to the secondary characters at the expense of the 'mains' is not floating my boat!

Now...can you say run-on sentence? LOL

message 4850: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I hate that too Angie. I wish authors would focus on the characters in their current book instead introducing the characters in their next book to a spectacular degree. It makes me feel like they're shoving them down my throat.
