Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I finished reading Tangled (Tangled, #1) by Emma Chase and thought it was ok. I can see why there are tons of 5 star reviews but I felt like it was more of a fun read, hot sex but nothing earth shattering.

message 4702: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Tellulah, I have some recs I will be back. If you didn't like the first of Downside Ghosts, I wouldn't go back. I agree it gets better but the books have the same tone and world -- so if you don't like you, you don't like it.

Leea you read fast! Sorry, past few days have been hard. How are all of you like Ashes to Ashes?

I am enjoying Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles #1) by Ilona Andrews I'm Dreaming of an Undead Christmas (Half-Moon Hollow, #2.6) by Molly Harper

message 4703: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I'm starting Ashes to Ashes today. I read chapter 1 last night, but that was it. I'm so excited for it.

Cool. :) I just picked up Succubus Blues from the library so going to try this. So far Mead hasn't let me down.

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Read Night of Cake & Puppets (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #2.5) by Laini Taylor which was so dazzling and romantic and perfect. Also Luna by Julie Anne Peters which sucked me in, although I didn't feel like I gained any new insights around being transsexuality. And a NG ARC 2 A.M. at the Cat's Pajamas by Charles Waddell Chesnutt . Kind of chaotic and turbulent - like the jazz world it's set around. Unfortunately, the ARC was so poorly laid out that the transitions between characters were jarring and often confusing.

The Succubus series is amazing. Seth is my favorite beta hero of all time. You can tell it's her first venture though because she's getting some of the world building kinks worked out in the first couple of books.

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I loved the succubus series but egads book 3

message 4709: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments #3 made me cry.

message 4710: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments I also really liked the Succubus series!

Just finished The Hypnotist's Love Story by Liane Moriarty and loved it! There were so many things I could relate to, except for the stalker but the way Moriarty writes, the reader can actually sympathize with the stalker. It's canny.

Now I've started The Dragon and the Pearl (Tang Dynasty, #2) by Jeannie Lin to hopefully check-off a challenge category (prostitute).

message 4711: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Luckily I don't even remember #3. Hey! That means enough time has passed that I can reread the series! Yay.

message 4712: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Tellulah have you read Psycop? That series is really good. The first is just good (and short, it is a novella) but after the first two they are amazing.

Among the Living (PsyCop, #1) by Jordan Castillo Price

Have you read the Disillusionists trilogy?

Mind Games (The Disillusionists Trilogy, #1) by Carolyn Crane

Also the Dresden Files is freaking amazing, but you have to push through two mediocre books to get to two good books and then they become freaking amazing. Still, I highly recommend it. It is the best urban fantasy series out there:

Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher

I have heard good things about this series and have been meaning to start
Kindling the Moon (Arcadia Bell, #1) by Jenn Bennett

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Regina, I've been debating between Arcadia Bell and Elemental Assassin for my next UF series. My friend Ash has been wanting me to read Kindling the Moon and highly recommended it to me, so it's on my short list.

message 4714: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I have a love / hate thing going on with the Elemental Assassin books. I really loathed one of the characters who appeared in the earlier books....but every time I decide to walk away something really good happens and I get sucked in again.

The Disillusionists trilogy is awesome. But it doesn't rate all that well and I honestly can't figure out why.

message 4715: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Everyone I know that has read the disillusionist loved it. That surprises me.

I read the first in elemental assassin and was not impressed. This was years ago so maybe I would think differently now.

Several friends of mine love Kindling the Moon - their love is making me want to move it up.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Regina wrote: "Everyone I know that has read the disillusionist loved it. That surprises me.

I know right! To me all of those books should be somewhere north of 4 Stars but Mind Games is 3.61...book two and three seem about right.

EA is an investment in time. I really loathed Donovan Caine...I mean loathed to the point that I was considering walking away from the series. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show... (what I really think of him).
But after book two it started to come good for me...at least for a while.

message 4717: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Hmm, I still think it is a 4.5-5 star book (regardless of the stats!! LOL). It took me by surprise. I love how Carolyn Crane writes so lightly -- and humorously. If that makes sense?

Huh, is it worth it to try EA again? Or should I just keep walking?

message 4718: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments So I want to stay home! It is warmer today (18 degrees, it was below zero yesterday) but nobody is at home and I just want to read. But I need to be there. At least I get to read on the train and it is pizza day at work. :) (sad but that is motivating me - no matter what Jon Stewart says, Chicago Pizza is damned good).

message 4719: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Regina, thank you! :) I read the first PsyCop series and kept meaning to keep going with it. Hopefully I can pick it up again. And I am dying to read The Dresden Files. Although Ian makes me want to get into The Disillusionists.

My TBR pile is happy now.

message 4720: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Tellulah, I think you would enjoy Crane's Disillusionists series. It needs more attention. Crane had to change publishers before she released the third book -- not sure why. But I have always thought she needed more attention. Her subsequent series are not as good as Disillusionists, but I enjoy them. I think she comes up with really unique ideas and I love her characters.

message 4721: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I loved the Disillusionists and I agree, her world is very unique especially for a UF series.

I'm currently reading Unveiled (Turner, #1) by Courtney Milan for this month's buddy read. I haven't gotten very far. If anyone would like to join us, we'll be discussing the book here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

message 4722: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

So true! She gets the neighborhoods right for Chicago and that I love (although she misspells a suburb once, but I am guessing her editor changed it).

Angie you would like her books.

message 4725: by Tellulah (last edited Dec 13, 2013 08:54PM) (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) I finished Succubus Blues (Georgina Kincaid, #1) by Richelle Mead a solid 3 star read. It didn't leave me giddy like VA did, because I found the world building clunky and the big reveal was obvious from the start. But I liked Georgina and of course, Seth. A lot of promise and I look forward to seeing where it goes.

message 4726: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Will you be moving on to the next in the series or to a different series?

message 4727: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Both I think. My library has the succubus series, but book two is out. So I'll see how fast I can get that from there. Meantime, I'm going to buy book one of The Disillusionists and the next Psycop since I've read book one. And I have Dresden Files on hold at library as well. I'll be reading in whatever order I get them :D

message 4728: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Hey, let me check my psycop book and see if I can lend it to you. Do you have a kindle? I can do the same with The Mind Game. I will go check ...

message 4729: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Oh well - Mind Games is not lending enabled and I already did my one time lending with Criss Cross (two years ago, shouldn't I be able to lend it at least once a year?!)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I just started Tangled by Emma Chase. You might think I'm reading it because it won the Best Debut Author in the GR choice awards. Perhaps you'd think I'm reading it because so many of my friends have rated it highly. You might even think I'm reading it because I love debuts and independently released books. If you thought any of those you'd be wrong! No the reason I'm reading it is...

(view spoiler)

It really is great. I love the small town vibe and the characters are written so well you feel like you know them.

message 4743: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I finished Unveiled (Turner, #1) by Courtney Milan and Fourth Comings (Jessica Darling, #4) by Megan McCafferty ...both I didn't enjoy very much.

Ian...looking forward to your Tangled review with gifs :)

message 4744: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Did you all know that Courtney Milan's book about Sebastian - The Countess Conspiracy - is up on NG?

message 4745: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) And they approved me in seconds, so anyone interested in getting this story - I'd say jump on over there and request it.

message 4746: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Hi guys! Hope you had a great weekend.

Finally finished Ashes to Ashes (Experiment in Terror, #8) by Karina Halle

Next up i'm going to read Too Stupid to Live (Romancelandia #1) by Anne Tenino

message 4747: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments finished listening to Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns - I liked it, but then I never read Devil Wears Prada, I only saw the movie...but for the most part the characters didn't change all that much

message 4748: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments I've been reading books to fulfill my Outlandish challenge and just completed it YAY! It seems that the last few books I've read had a similar theme going on and wasn't aware of it until later. I don't want to say because it can be spoilerish. The books: Someone to Watch Over Me (Bow Street Runners, #1) by Lisa Kleypas for the prostitute requirement since the other book I read didn't quite meet it which was, The Dragon and the Pearl (Tang Dynasty, #2) by Jeannie Lin . I liked the Dragon and the Pearl though and plan to read book 1 of that series. Then, I needed a M-F-M type marriage! So read Colters' Woman (Colters' Legacy, #1) by Maya Banks which did even better with a M-F-M-M - I know! Kinda bizaare and totally fantasy type story...somebody's fantasy, not sure it would be mine LOL!

message 4749: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Lisa - if you ever need another m-f-m marraige (although it also has m-m-f), then Tymber Dalton has her Love Slave for Two series - Love Slave for Two

message 4750: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I started reading Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #2) by Laini Taylor .
