Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Thanks! I just noticed my library has several of her books in ebook - yay!

message 4652: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Actually, two more that I read that were similar in set up were:

The Year of Secret Assignments (Ashbury/Brookfield, #2) by Jaclyn Moriarty Last Days of Summer by Steve Kluger

The first one is a YA and it's done in emails, im's, journal entries, and some regular writing. It was cute enough. 4 stars.

Last Days of Summer was brilliant. Entirely done in letters/report cards/psychologist notes/newspaper articles in the 1940's between a little boy and a baseball player. I loved it so much. I try so hard to push this book on people, hahaha.

message 4653: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Cool -- thank you Wendy! I am adding both of them.

message 4654: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Awesome! Let me know if you start reading them. I'll be curious to see how you feel. :)

Adding these to my list too!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Roomies is an interesting idea to me because I've never had one. I moved out on my own and only lived alone or with my oldest son until I moved in with my fiancee. I've always wondered how I would have done with having a room mate.

Ian wrote: "Just finished Santa Olivia....oh my. That was good."

I'm almost done. I'll probably finish sometime in the next couple of hours. I'm nervous about how this is going to end, but there's a book 2 I think.

I have the feeling that Regina and D.G. would really like this book. Maybe Wendy too.

message 4657: by Regina (last edited Dec 09, 2013 11:08AM) (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments The book 2 got weirdly different ratings, but there do not seem to be a lot of people who read it.

ETA: The same author also has a new UF series out Dark Currents (Agent of Hel, #1) by Jacqueline Carey Autumn Bones (Agent of Hel, #2) by Jacqueline Carey Poison Fruit

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I hadn't really heard much about Santa Olivia before picking it up, but I've had a few people message me and tell me that they love the books since I've started.

I might try her other UF series at some point. I've been meaning to read Kushiel's Dart also, for a while now.

message 4659: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments It took me 3 tries to get into Kushiel's Dart, but once I did I loved it. It is traditional fantasy, lots of political intrigue and world building at the beginning.

message 4660: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I think I mentioned Dark Currents above - I kinda liked it - i'm a fan of Norse mythology, add in the MI twist (for you wendy)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I find that if I psyche myself up to expect world building from the get-go, I accept it a lot easier and find the book less of a chore, so that's good to know.

I like that the author seems to be writing vastly different types of series. Kushiel's is more fantasy based, Agent of Hel seems to be straight UF, and Santa Olivia draws on a gritty apocalyptic vibe.

Me too :) haha!

message 4663: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments My TBR pile is growing in this group today. haha!

Regina, have you read any of Rainbow Rowell's books before? I think you'd really like them. She writes such smart witty books... Not your typical main characters, I just love them!

Leea | 1437 comments Dee wrote: "I think I mentioned Dark Currents above - I kinda liked it - i'm a fan of Norse mythology, add in the MI twist (for you wendy)"

Oh those sound good Dee. I like Norse Mythology... more to the pile!

message 4665: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I started and finished Upon A Winter's Night (MacKinnon's Rangers #3.5) by Pamela Clare and it was just what I needed! I love the Rangers! Now i'm so excited for William and Josephs books.

Now i'm going to read Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles #1) by Ilona Andrews also very excited for this book. It's not too long, 180 pages or so. Love the cover!

message 4666: by Jen (at last!) (last edited Dec 09, 2013 06:32PM) (new)

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 222 comments I'm going to start Virgin River (Virgin River, #1) by Robyn Carr . Finally.

message 4667: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Yay!! Let us know what you think Jen.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Finished Santa Olivia (Santa Olivia, #1) by Jacqueline Carey and it was so good. Gonna have to fit book 2 in soon.

Now working on These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1) by Amie Kaufman . It's in space, yay!

message 4669: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I was wondering what book you were talking about, that you said we'd like. Going to check it out now.

message 4670: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments These Broken Stars was a surprisingly good read.

message 4671: by Crystal (new)

Crystal Navarro (kanarenee) I'm cracking into Secret (Elemental, #4) by Brigid Kemmerer today, as I finished Spirit finally.

Hellloooo Nick Merrick!

message 4672: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I'm going to read that one after I start and finish Ashes to Ashes (Experiment in Terror, #8) by Karina Halle . I can't wait for Nicks story!

message 4673: by Crystal (new)

Crystal Navarro (kanarenee) It will be good! I'll read slow so we can read together :P

message 4674: by Crystal (new)

Crystal Navarro (kanarenee) It will be good! I'll read slow so we can read together :P Maybe. If I can hold back.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Crystal did you read nick's novella? I would definitely read that first. It sort of sets up his book

message 4676: by Crystal (new)

Crystal Navarro (kanarenee) I did read it! It came with my purchase of Spirit :)

message 4677: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I want to read Nick's story. I loved his novella. I just have to get to Hunter's story first.

message 4678: by Crystal (new)

Crystal Navarro (kanarenee) I was really avoiding Hunter's book because I am not a big fan of his character, but I'm glad I read it. I would have been missing a lot and there is seriously a lot stuff going on in that book.

message 4679: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Can I just say this new GR thing where it labels mod comments is really jarring?

message 4680: by Ian (last edited Dec 10, 2013 10:06PM) (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Tellulah wrote: "Can I just say this new GR thing where it labels mod comments is really jarring?"

I wonder why they did that. I don't much like it. I think if they really needed to identify moderators they could just do a small "m" or even "mod" in a circle.

message 4681: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Tellulah, I was just going say the same thing. wow that's just distracting. Looks like GR is making some more changes?

I'm really enjoying Clean Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles #1) by Ilona Andrews ... It's so creative but I think i'd love anything Andrews writes.

I also hope to start Ashes to Ashes (Experiment in Terror, #8) by Karina Halle tomorrow.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I hate them too and think they can be turned off.

message 4683: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

message 4687: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments It was a request from ppl to have a way to identify official mod posts but not every single one made by them

message 4688: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Here is the request: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... The response seems to be overkill in relation to what was requested and why.

message 4689: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Yeah that was overkill... If you don't know the Mods in a group your commenting in you can always just look at the homepage and see their avatars. Anyway...

I finished Clean Sweep and loved it!

Next up is Ashes to Ashes (Experiment in Terror, #8) by Karina Halle and Regina you have me so excited to read this.

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Leea wrote: "I just turned them off..."

How and where please.

message 4691: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments it didn't shut it off for the group?

I went to Settings - scroll down, to "moderator posts are highlighted" and unclick that. then make sure to save.

Hope that helps :)

message 4692: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Any suggestions for a new UF series along the lines of Fever or Ilona Andrews Magic series? I just bought her new one Clean Sweep so there's that. And I never got into Downside Ghosts or The Janine Frost one. Although I only read the first book of each.

I want kick ass sexy that I can consume over the holidays. Thank you kindly. :)

My vote is Downside Ghosts... it gets better and better with each book. It's one of my favorite UF series. That sounds fabulous diving into a series during the holidays. So jealous. My husband will be off till after the first of the year, so i'm sure we'll be busy.

It's been a crazy day, still haven't started Ashes to Ashes... after dinner!

message 4695: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Tellulah - have you tried Devon Monk - I liked her allie Beckstrom series...it took me a book to get into it...but overall, i've liked it

message 4696: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments re: the mod thing...I get the knowing their avatars, I was thinking more good for like comments where the mods step in officially (i.e. a fight going on, giving guidance) where it needs to be an official moderator type statement...those can get lost in the zoo, if the mods are really active in the group

message 4697: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Agreed Dee. And that is what it sounded like Ames wanted.

message 4698: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I just finished listening to Deadlock (V.I. Warshawski, #2) by Sara Paretsky - its always interesting listening to what was a contemporary novel when it was written that is now nearly 30 years old (originally written in 1984)

I hadn't Dee, but I just read the synopsis and it might fit the bill perfectly. Thanks!

message 4700: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I hope you like it Tellulah and if you don't...well, then i'll deny recommending it to you ;) hehe - but seriously, i'm up to book 4 and enjoying it - I just have trouble squeezing into challenges
