Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I am so behind, I never watch TV and feel so out of conversations. :)

I finished Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs (Jane Jameson, #1) by Molly Harper Devil's Punch (Corine Solomon, #4) by Ann Aguirre

Nice Girls was good ole Molly Harper fun. :) I can't wait to go on to the next in the series.

Devil's Punch was good. I am so conflicted about Ann Aguirre's writing. I don't like how she writes, but her story and characters are really well done. But I bought the next, b/c I had to know and I am now reading Agave Kiss (Corine Solomon, #5) by Ann Aguirre

message 4508: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Happy Hanukkah and Happy Thanksgiving all! May you all have a great start to the holiday season.

message 4509: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Happy Hanukkah and Thanksgiving (belatedly!)!

I finished Agave Kiss (Corine Solomon, #5) by Ann Aguirre I liked the ending, but the same assessment as above.

I am reading Night of Cake & Puppets (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #2.5) by Laini Taylor and listening to Nice Girls Don't Date Dead Men (Jane Jameson, #2) by Molly Harper

message 4510: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic Finished Open Season by Linda Howard and Three to Get Deadly (Stephanie Plum, #3) by Janet Evanovich . Both were quick, fun reads.

message 4511: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Three to Get Deadly was a lot of fun. My favorite in that series is Hard Eight (Stephanie Plum, #8) by Janet Evanovich - - it features a lot of Morelli.

Leea | 1437 comments I hope everyone is having a good holiday and had today off work. I'm struggling with Restless Spirit An Erotic Novel by Sommer Marsden . Just seems so hot then cold. Plus sometimes Erotica is just so hit or miss with me.

I may have to just read The Art of Seducing a Naked Werewolf (Naked Werewolf, #2) by Molly Harper lol!

Oh Wendy, when did you want to read Magic Rises (Kate Daniels, #6) by Ilona Andrews ??

Is it bad I have a turkey breast in the oven for our own little Thanksgiving? I can't not cook. haha!

message 4515: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Magic Rises is so good. So good.

I enjoyed the art of seducing! The hero is a cute nerd. I loved it. :)

message 4516: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 159 comments I finished On Dublin Street (On Dublin Street, #1) by Samantha Young , which was pretty good. I can see why it had the high ratings but it wasn't my favorite.

Now I'm going to read Written on Your Skin by Meredith Duran .

Night of Cake & Puppets (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #2.5) by Laini Taylor How To Run With A Naked Werewolf (Naked Werewolf, #3) by Molly Harper

message 4519: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Ian, can't wait to hear what you think of How to run?

message 4523: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I'm having a hard time getting through First Drop of Crimson (Night Huntress World, #1) by Jeaniene Frost . This doesn't even feel like the same author who wrote the Night Huntress series.

message 4524: by Dee (new)

Oh wow!! What a great coincidence. :))

message 4526: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Read Bad Idea by Damon Suede I'd wanted to read Damon Suede for a while and was excited about a m/m that featured geektastic guys. But man, did the first half drag. There wasn't really anything propelling the narrative in a concrete way. Still, over all, fun and hot.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Finished Crash into You (Pushing the Limits, #3) by Katie McGarry . Meh.

There's a lot of buzz about that Torre book. It's supposed to be pretty damn hot!

I tried Erotica and it didn't work. I should be reading Magic Rises with Wendy and I really want to get into it but I can't even read the first page. Ha! I'm taking the boys to get hair cuts and to see Frozen and then i'll read.

You do have me interested in the Torre book, never read that author before. Can't wait to hear what you think.

message 4535: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments One of the issues with erotica is it's grouped with romance. Erotica isn't romance. There are sometimes romantic elements to it but it's not romance. It annoys me a little that Goodreads class it as romance in the GR Choice awards. It's the same as classing sci-fi and fantasy together.

I've read a (very) little erotica and I can't question that some of what I read was brilliantly written, but they didn't make me happy and romance (even bad romance) usually makes me happy. Erotica always makes me feel a little sad.

message 4536: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I think it depends Ian, it definitely can't be decided on category name alone. Many erotica stories and novels (and a lot of what is popular right now) are about people finding each other and falling in love and in to a relationship but also with explicit and numerous sex scenes. The lines between romance and erotica are often blurred - - if there was a Venn diagram (and I am sure there is one somewhere), I can imagine there would be overlap. A publisher/vendor coined the category "romantica" which didn't really take off in terms of how people think of certain categories, I think maybe b/c of the blurry lines between romance and erotica and many people are okay with that. Lisa Kleypas, in my opinion, would fall in the blurry lined area of the Venn diagram. She writes her sex scenes very explicitly and depending on the book -- there are a lot of them. But most people categorize her as romance. Lori Foster writes her love scenes really explicitly (and numerously) as well.

There is definitely erotica that is only about sex and not romance based, but if I remember correctly the erotica nominated for goodreads awards, those did have a relationship at issue, right? (as much as I didn't like the ones nominated: https://www.goodreads.com/choiceaward...)

I think fantasy is considered a sub-category under the genre of science fiction and sometimes vice versa, and people who don't read either one often see them as blended together. They are very different in my opinion and I agree with you completely, there was the push to create speculative fiction as a main category and have sub categories under it. But I am not sure the comparison between the different genres are analogous, I think there are more differences between sf and fantasy than between romance based erotica and romance.

Ha, I found this Venn diagram: http://openroadmedia.kinja.com/kisser...

But erotica has never made me sad. :) So it may just be a difference of opinion. While I am not a big consumer of erotica at all, I prefer romance in the blurry lined area of any other genre fiction.

message 4537: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments No worries, Leea, I have literally only read the first chapter!

message 4538: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I remember something Tiffany Reisz said which I thought was kind of interesting. She said erotica was not a sub-genre of romance but a sub-genre of horror.

I look at an author like Anne Calhoun who is considered by many to be a writer of erotica, but I don't see it. What I see is romance albeit quite explicit.

There's a definite blurring of the lines and I think a lot of romance writers have seen an opportunity since the success of Fifty Shades of Grey. I mean even Susan Elizabeth Phillips had a slightly embarrassing scene in one of her recent books involving twizzlers if my memory serves me. Honestly it was just awkward.

I like the idea that there should be sub-categories under the heading of romance. Something like, contemporary, historical, paranormal, suspense, erotica. But any of the first four could also be classed as "steamy romance" without necessarily being erotica.

Anna (Bobs Her Hair) Ian wrote: "I remember something Tiffany Reisz said which I thought was kind of interesting. She said erotica was not a sub-genre of romance but a sub-genre of horror.

There's another label, Ian. Erotic romance is sometimes called romantica. This may appeal to shy readers.

Lauren Dane writes 'steamy' romance and erotic romance. There is a difference in explicitness and sexual situations. Anne Calhoun's Liberating Lacey is explicit and includes role play. I consider it erotic romance. Nowadays, many rom novels are steamy because they sure as heck are not like the novels I read in the 80s and early 90s. Stephanie Lauren's historical roms are pretty steamy.

Anyway, I think there are definite lines qualifying a novel as romance, steamy romance, erotic romance, and erotica. I haven't read Tiffany Reisz, but some of the reviews would indicate there's horror in her sex/love scenes. The erotic romances I've read don't read like horror, which I used to read.

"I'm a Navy SEAL"

The bane of my existence. Yet another hero who is a Navy SEAL. I feel authors should understand that someone who says they are probably isn't. Those guys tend to be a little cagey about who they work for.

It's not bad but the whole Navy SEAL thing annoys me.

For some reason it reminds me of Johnny Depp, FBI agent, wearing an FBI T-shirt in Once Upon A Time In Mexico.

I'm loving this book!

message 4546: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I love how they catch us readers up but still keep the tempo fast. It's just something about how Andrews makes it feel natural not like a info dump.

I agree Wendy, I'm loving this book. 17% but hope to read more after dinner.

message 4547: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) I find that Andrews makes each book in the series satisfying on its own terms. I haven't really had a sense of, okay, here's the filler story while I wait for the big battle, next book.

message 4548: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments I just finished 11/22/63 by Stephen King and realized how much I miss Stephen King's writing - that I should read more of his books. I took a break from him long ago and hadn't returned until this summer's Joyland by Stephen King and really liked that one.

Now I'm finally going to read that arc, which is Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 222 comments Just read Elemental (Elemental, #0.5) by Brigid Kemmerer and I'm hooked! I want to read Storm (Elemental, #1) by Brigid Kemmerer so badly, but I have to wait til I can get it digitally from my library!

I also finished The Raven Boys (The Raven Cycle, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater two weeks ago and I cannot wait to read The Dream Thieves (The Raven Cycle, #2) by Maggie Stiefvater !!

I started Origin (Lux, #4) by Jennifer L. Armentrout over a month ago, but can't seem to get into it which is odd for me b/c I've loved the other books in the series so much.

I need to read The Fiery Heart (Bloodlines, #4) by Richelle Mead ASAP!
