I wasn't a big fan of Duchess War (thought it was okay, same as you), but book 2 was SO much better. It was literally like night and day, how much more I liked book 2.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Wal-Mart...it's like Disney Land for red necks. lol...honestly I don't know all that much about Wal-Mart except they treat their staff badly and I've seen some very scary photos of people...the scariest was the woman who pulled her pants up to cover her breasts.

Yeah, I just finished it. I loved Jane. I thought she was such a refreshing heroine. Even though this book didn't contain all my go-tos in terms of dark haired alpha, wit, steam - it was great fun to read and really well done.

Anyone have any recs for a good urban fantasy? I have read several of the popular ones out there but I wonder if there's a hidden gem.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Kay, this is all from your bookshelves -- ones you have listed but haven't read:

(series you haven't finished): What about Magic Rises? or Wanderlust? Where did you leave off with Psycop?

I enjoyed Silver, it is solidly in the UF category with only a hint of romance and a male POV.

Dresden Files are a gem (amazing in fact), but -- only after book 3. You need to start books 1 and 2 with the understanding that you just have to get through them.

Tempting Danger

Rot & Ruin

Fire Baptized is really different and good.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone!!!! (enough said)

Magic Rises (Kate Daniels, #6) by Ilona Andrews Wanderlust (Sirantha Jax, #2) by Ann Aguirre Camp Hell (PsyCop, #5) by Jordan Castillo Price Silver (Silver, #1) by Rhiannon Held Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher Tempting Danger (World of the Lupi, #1) by Eileen Wilks Rot and Ruin (Benny Imura, #1) by Jonathan Maberry Fire Baptized (Santeria Habitat, #1) by Kenya Wright Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor

Ones not on your list:
The Devil's Metal (Devils, #1) by Karina Halle

I am interested in trying these:
The Atrocity Archives (The Laundry Files, #1) by Charles Stross The Greyfriar (Vampire Empire, #1) by Clay Griffith

It's that certain je ne sais quoi way of viewing the world. :)

Wow...thanks! I will have to think about this. There's so many choices! I do want to read Magic Rises but I haven't read Gunmetal Magic yet. I tried reading Wanderlust but didn't get very far. I'm not sure if I will pick that series up again. Camphell is where I need to pick up Psycop again. Most of these UFs that I added to my shelf was from me surfing through your UF shelf over the years. LOL Okay...I'm off to check out the rest of these recs.

Regina, book 1 of Vampire Empire was very good. I keep meaning to read on in the trilogy.

Tellulah, the People of Wal-Mart site is a trip.

Leea | 1437 comments I'm devouring, How to Flirt with a Naked Werewolf. I'll finish tomorrow. Quick question for those who've read the series. Is each book a different couple or do we follow Mo and Cooper?

message 4477: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Leea wrote: "Is each book a different couple or do we follow Mo and Cooper?"

Each book is about different characters...it's been so long since I read them that my memory is kind of sketchy but I think the characters in book one showed up in book two but only in a small way.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Stacia (...) wrote: "I still need to read book 3. That might have to go on my December list."

Oh my! I didn't know you hadn't read it....book 3 was amazing.

message 4479: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I think I'm going to go against the consensus on World After. I'm kind of using Daughter of Smoke and Bone as a point of reference and IMO DoSaB is better in every way.
World After is an OK book with an amazing ending, but Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Days of Blood and Starlight pound into you with every word (imo).

Not sure if I'm going to give it 3 Stars for the whole book, or reward the amazing ending and give it 4 Stars yet.

message 4480: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Leea - mo and cooper appear in the next 2 books, the second more than the third but each is a different couple - bk 2 is cooper's sister and 3 is a cousin (iirc)

I think I see the two book series as being completely different and from different genres, therefore I can judge them differently. Laini Taylor's writing is (my favorite term for her) word porn. She puts a lot of thought into the world and character descriptions, making them magical (which lends itself well to the fantasy vibe). Susan Ee's style of writing is darker, more apocalyptic. So it's like comparing apples to oranges, I think. Even if both books do have apocalyptic elements in them, I think DoSaB lies heavier to the urban fantasy/high fantasy hybrid side, and Angelfall to the sci-fi/apocalyptic side.

I honestly love them both equally, with both series having an impressive two books out. For me, DoSaB is slightly better than Angelfall, but DoBaS is slightly weaker than World After, so Taylor wins round one, and Ee wins round 2 in my book, but both series are so incredible that I really hate to award one over the other.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Finished Pawn (The Blackcoat Rebellion, #1) by Aimee Carter and it was an interesting start to the series, but the heavy focus on romance and body-switching took away from the experience of learning about the world and class system, which I think should have been the biggest focus of book 1 in a new dystopia series. I would have preferred to have seen Pawn as a prequel if all it was going to do was set up the characters.

Starting Crash into You (Pushing the Limits, #3) by Katie McGarry

message 4483: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Ha, I was coming to say something similar. I can see on the surface the comparison -- both fall into urban fantasy and both have angel male leads. But I think that is where the comparisons end for me. Laini Taylor writes more fantasy and her style of writing is just so different. I think a reader can definitely have a preference of one over the other but for me, I wouldn't put them in the same category.

Kay -- you should definitely read Daughter of Smoke and Bone!

It is written like PNR books. This one is definitely the best of the series, but the others are good too. I thin you would love

message 4486: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Anyone starting Night of Cake & Puppets (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #2.5) by Laini Taylor today? It showed up on my kindle this morning. :)

message 4487: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I ended up starting Tempting Danger (World of the Lupi, #1) by Eileen Wilks which is okay so far. I'm not really into the detective mystery type series but it's starting to get interesting (at 29%).

I will have to pick up Daughter of Smoke and Bone soon. I downloaded it to my kindle after I read this Angelfall vs. DoSaB discussion.

message 4490: by Ian (last edited Nov 26, 2013 11:32AM) (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I see quite a lot of comparisons between Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Penryn and the End of Days.

Both have Angels as the bad guys. Both have something like a fallen angel as the main male character. Both have beings being created to be fearsome and hideous, chimera. Both have a gentle and beautiful character who has been changed to be an instrument of terror. Both have angels carrying out a brutal genocide and at the centre is one young woman who fights for justice. In both cases book two is largely a separation between the two main characters. Both have a fledgling resistance in which military power rules and the leaders put themselves above the people.

I quite enjoyed World After but most of the book was just OK and every now and then a moment of greatness would smash into me. Daughter of Smoke and Bone was just wave after wave of greatness.

Cute story! I'm not much for light romance but Molly Harper is one of the exceptions. Not OTT whacky. Her characters tickle the funny bone just right. :D

I'm reading Cottonwood by R. Lee Smith . It probably won't exceed the reading high The Last Hour of Gann by R. Lee Smith gave me, but R. Lee Smith knocks it out of the park with her world-building and compelling characters.
