I agree; she really hit her stride with the third book. The second book is my least favorite of the series. It had one of those TSTL heroines. The only thing I liked about it was Sam and Alyssa.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments The first 5-6 books involve active duty SEALs so that might be hard to do. :)

I just finished this Shadows (Ashes Trilogy, #2) by Ilsa J. Bick and i just started this One Heart to Win by Johanna Lindsey

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments So I finished Parasite (Parasitology, #1) by Mira Grant and I really liked it. No big surprises, but a really good story. So much better than Feed was in terms of Grant's first book of a series. Such an interesting take on an apocalypse!!!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I felt the same way, that it was much better than Feed for a first book (although I still want to finish that trilogy because everyone says it gets better).

Cameron, how are you liking the Ashes trilogy?

I guess the real difference between the Navy SEALs and the Marines is if a Marine encounters a bolt that's rusted on he'll use WD40...a Navy SEAL will call in an air strike.

message 4058: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments LOL! But nah, they don't do airstrikes anymore -- drones are called in.

Stacia it does, ##2 and 3 are amazing in the Newsflesh trilogy.

I think you can. I'm only to chap 3 but so far they have just referenced one character from Troubleshooters but the way she wrote it, you wouldn't have to know of him before to understand what happened.

They really are a different kind of romantic suspense. The covers don't do it justice.

I love it! I'm enjoying this anti hero these Brockmann has going here. I like that Ian is ex SEAL but he's really all about family. I got home today after being at the boys school from 8am-3:30pm Seriously, I need a job there. That was all free labor people - yikes! To just wanting to read before having to make dinner. Ward since i just got it from the library. i'm not so interested in Tohr's story, but i hope i'm not terribly disappointed cause i've enjoyed the last few in the series.

Have passed on books with military romances as older son is in the Air Force and would seem too "icky"! lol!

Leea, when kids are young and in school and lots of activities it seems like you'll never get time for yourself. Hang in there, they do grow up SO fast!

I remember all the volunteer hours I put into helping with school and also sports. Both sons were in high school cross country and I ended up being the Booster Club "information" secretary. Wow! I would sometimes be up at midnite answering e-mails from parents and even the runners. Lots of "newbie" parents thought I was the coaches personal secretary and was paid! lol! But lots of good memories and I bet you'll look back on these days fondly; even though it doesn't seem like it now! :D

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments In interviews with Suz, readers always ask -- when will Martell (and Lopez of course!) get a book of their own. :)

message 4087: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I hope they do in THIS series!

message 4088: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Peggy it is funny how parents perceive volunteers for school or sports to be paid. I get that all the time -- I thought it was maybe my suburb, but I guess not!! One of my favorite stories is I was helping register kids for soccer in a traveling soccer club I started locally. It is small, only 5 teams - and I was registering this kid, talking to his dad (whom my husband is coaching, I am the parent volunteer for that team in addition to being the club president) and I meet this dad. I ask his name and he tells me, "I am Mr. X." Huh, I wanted to say - -did your parents give you the name "Mr."? Really, I am doing this extra work for you and you can't give me your first name? Nice.

I have started signing my emails, "A volunteer and a parent just like you."

That's right. How did I forget that? Lol! He's such a cutie :)

message 4090: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments That's a good idea Regina, putting that title in an email. At our harvest festival this weekend, I had a parent ask if I was a teacher at our school. When I said No, she said, Oh I see you all the time. OMG! My husband then gave me "the look." He keeps telling me to not volunteer as much, to stay home and read. haha!

I try not to complain about my volunteer time, I do enjoy it. It just gets overwhelming for me at times. Especially when all my positions seem to all converge in the same week. Ha!

message 4091: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments I know exactly how you feel, Leea, because I could not say no when the kids were in school and I was everything - roommom, Light Bright volunteer, secretary of the PTA, chaperone for outings, Cub Scout co-group leader, 4-H club leader besides helping at their assorted sports activities and volunteer teacher helper. For a brief period, I was a paraprofessional for kindergarten class (FUN!) until it was cut from program. On top of that, I worked part time. Must not have slept much and I know that I didn't get in any reading because I would only fall asleep :( But I loved it and didn't miss the reading because I wasn't a big reader since my pre-teen years. It would've been much harder if I had the love for reading I have now. LOL on the "look" from your husband, Leea! I know that look!

message 4092: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments If it wasn't for people volunteering their time for free the wheels would completely fall off.

You know what bugs me though? There is this church close to where I live called Hillsong. They have a bookshop which makes a tidy profit...because they are a church they don't pay tax...I have a friend who works in the bookshop full time for free, she doesn't get paid a penny and it actually costs her to work there. I mean she has to travel to and from the place, she has young children and she puts them in Hillsong's daycare while she works which she pays for. And with all of that, she's made to feel guilty if she's a little late.

message 4093: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic Hubby used to say: "You know that you aren't required to raise your hand everytime a request Is made for a volunteer."! But then he would also be the first in line to sign up for carpooling cross country. He preferred helping out with high schoolers. They loved the music he played in the car (Led Zepplin, etc)

Once I was very sick when younger son was in Kindergarten so Mike went in my place on a field trip to the beach. He said never again! lol!

Wow, Ian, sounds like the church doesn't appreciate what they have.

message 4095: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Yeah, that's not right they make her pay for daycare. Our church doesn't charge for day care during church events, it's just part of what they offer.

message 4096: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I hardly had time to read today. I volunteered as one of the chaperones for Ethan's field trip to the pumpkin patch today. I like volunteering my time but I do work full time. I just wish I could do more of it. I do appreciate all the parents at my son's school and at all the sports organizations b/c it's the volunteers that really make the place run. Hats off to you all who have the time to spear.
