Lisa | 383 comments LOL Ian - loved your visual of Linda Howard's "bad guy"! So I may skip 'Ice' since I don't have it and read Open Season by Linda Howard later. Haven't heard yet which Howard book we'll be reading for Nov.

The Book Thief as a movie - may wait for dvd and Netflix it since I'll probably cry, like Peggy was saying. Kinda like The Boy in the Striped Pajamas - cried thru the book so knew that the movie would be a tear-jerker too. Both books are really good.

I've read all the Plum books I had on hand so now I'm ready to jump back into the world of the BDB and have started Lover At Last (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #11) by J.R. Ward on my kindle. Oh man! I was sitting at the tire store, quietly reading when I got to a sorta steamy scene and my face got all hot and I had to take my jacket off LOL! Then the tire guy called my name - car's ready! Whew.

Did you get this from NG? I remember seeing this. Sounds good!

I hate days when I don't get to read! Ugh!

I sure remember those days when reading was so difficult to schedule or else seemed to only be reading "kids" books! Hope you get some "adult" reading in this weekend :D

"cars ready Whew!" lol! Seems like whenever I'm reading at doctor or dentist I get to the sad parts and cry! Why I love Kindle, I can go to something different! :D

Not sure, wasn't Open Season one of our choices?

message 4007: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Yep, Kindles are great! Love mine.

Leea - Open Season was a choice but I don't think a Nov. book had been decided on yet. Unless I missed it.

message 4008: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Sorry, no we never decided on a book. I'll go to the LH thread and see if you can all decide on one :)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments We hadn't. There's a few LH books I want to read, so I'm game for most any of them. Open Season would be fine with me.

message 4010: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Just visited the LH thread too and put in my 2 cents.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Open Season...

It's like buying a meatball sub from the service station.
I shouldn't like it. It should make me ill.
But for some strange reason it seems to work.

No. I grabbed it at my library, Leea. And Peggy - I wish we could get Kindle editions at libraries here in Canada. It would make life so much easier.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Tellulah, can you do a inter-library loan for ebooks? I don't know how that would work across country lines, but there are several "general public" libraries from what I recall, even though I've never used one.

Finished All I Want Is You by Elizabeth Anthony and ended up liking better than expected, given the low ratings (although I suspect that many of the low ratings were due to the non-ending of the book and there being no indication of a book 2, although I just found out that there will be a book 2, so it wasn't really cut off). I like stories in which a young girl spends years waiting for a man, and he doesn't come back until much later to find her all grown up. The sensuality was nice, and the hero was a good balance of honorable and devious, which I liked. But the female annoyed me and the f/f scenes felt out of place for this particular story.

message 4017: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I like those stories too, Stacia, where the guy comes back years later & the girl is all grown up.

I'm am reading Welcome to Paradise (The Kincaids, #1) by Rosalind James and it is very different than other CRs I usually read. It's about a reality show with a group of people living in 1800s style. We'll see how it goes...so far, I'm enjoying it.

I watched a similar reality show a few years back where people were thrown back into a prairie lifestyle and forced to do everything as it was done back then (no electricity, hand tools, etc.) and thought it was a lot of fun. You'll have to let me know if that book is any good.

yup...that's basically what the contestants are put through. In the book, it's a popular show that has been on for 5 seasons on the History channel.

A real show like this sounds fun! Is it still on?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I don't think so. I think this might have been the one I watched and it was on pbs, but I'm not sure because I can't find the year. I want to say that it was a few years ago, at least. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/frontierhouse...

D.G. There's a scene in Open Season about condom buying that's hysterical!

I know I've been lost but I haven't been reading as much as I used to. I tell you, this job searching is wreaking havoc with my reading! I thought I was going to enjoy being unemployed more.

At least I'm having a second interview sometime next week.

message 4024: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic Tellulah, that sucks that you don't have access to digital library books in Canada!

Kay, "Welcome to Paradise" looks good!

Stacia, I remember watching 1 or 2 episodes of Frontier House on PBS, it was interesting!

D.G., good luck with your job search!

Leea | 1437 comments That's great DG...

Still struggling with Book Thief. I've had the worst insomnia this week, been up most nights at 3:30am or earlier only to finally fall asleep at 6am then up 30 min later to get the boys off to school. *Sucks*

I have digital access but only epubs. And since I have Kindle, it means I'm reading off my computer which isn't ideal. Wish Kindle would put the library deal in place here!!

I didn't realize that in Canada you only had access to epubs. I think I read that it's the same in UK? I can access digital through 2 library systems but am noticing that some of my favorites are now only available in epubs not Kindle such Winter of the World (The Century Trilogy #2) by Ken Follett . Agree that it's very hard on the eyes to read a book on a computer screen!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Finished The Book Thief by Markus Zusak , and while I didn't like it quite as much as I loved Between Shades of Gray, the last part of the book got me in the heart. I did cry.

Back to Fractured (Guards of the Shadowlands, #2) by Sarah Fine and I will probably be starting The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde tomorrow as a buddy.

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I am wondering if one you can help me with a Kindle question. My Fire appears to be stuck on the Kindle Fire homescreen, and I've tried rebooting, but it doesn't help. I am in need of a new Kindle.

While getting on-line is great, I can do that with my cell phone. I am thinking of getting just the Kindle. However, I want to still be able to send 'documents' to myself to read. Is this an option with the regular Kindle?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide! :)

message 4031: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Yes, you can send yourself documents to the Kindle Paperwhite (Kindle touch)

As for the stuck Kindle Fire. Have you tried plugging it into your computer? I know that once my friends Kindle Touch was stuck, she couldn't turn it off or restart it. She let it sit and it reset after a bit.

Good luck Angie!

message 4032: by Regina (new)

message 4033: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments Thanks, gals.

I did plug it in, Leea, but it's not even registering as a device that's plugged in.

Do you know if I can also bookmark or highlite passages? I love that feature for reviewing.

Thanks again!

message 4034: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Yeah, highlight, bookmark, see percentages read, and you will be able to highlight & share qustes soon on Goodreads.

Leea | 1437 comments Oh and define words you don't know. Love that!

message 4036: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I am loving my paperwhite! Just had to throw that in there. I find the highlighting and note taking very easy.

I finished reading Welcome to Paradise (The Kincaids, #1) by Rosalind James and thought it was fun. Reality show fans will enjoy this.

I also finished reading Lost and Found by Chris Van Hakes which wasn't that great.

I hope everyone is having a good weekend!

message 4037: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I love my Paperwhite too :)

I had to set aside The Book Thief, I just was stuck and didn't want to continue. So for me that means it's just not working for me.

Now i'm reading Brockmann's new series and i'm already in love :) Do Or Die by Suzanne Brockmann I mean that cover and I love how Ian's character is this guy with a past, not perfect or even wholesome. It's awesome! I'm only to chap 2 but I want to know more...

Happy Sunday True Love... I'm off to a kids birthday party!

message 4038: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (last edited Oct 27, 2013 02:06PM) (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I started The Edge of Never (The Edge of Never, #1) by J.A. Redmerski , but it's just not grabbing me yet.

So I also picked up Do Or Die by Suzanne Brockmann , and I'm going to try and alternate every other chapter to try and get me to the good parts of The Edge of Never. This may not work, though, as there always comes a point in a Brockmann book when you cannot put it down.

I forgot her formula--exciting mission at the beginning, back to every day life, and then BOOK! Another huge mission. I freaking love it. I haven't read a Brockmann book in years.

Ooops...that was supposed to be BOOM! The lame part of me thinks BOOK! was little funny, though, so I'm going to leave it. LOL

message 4039: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I've kind of boycotted books with ex-Navy SEALs as the main character. It's just such a cliche. If you're a writer, say "No!" to SAS operators, Navy SEALs, Delta operators.
Walk a new path! I want a hero from U.S. airforce STS.

message 4040: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (last edited Oct 27, 2013 02:18PM) (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments Even if I boycotted ex-Navy SEALs, the fact that it was written by Suzanne Brockmann would trump my boycott. LOL

message 4041: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments errr...I know I've already said this but that cover is kind of funny. Seems that there are two rules for covers these days. Shirts off or tuxedo on. And he should probably move his thumb if he doesn't want to slice his hand open.

message 4042: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Oct 27, 2013 02:29PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Ian, I'm with you on that cover. It makes me want to cringe, haha. It's so tired, cliche and cheesy looking. Who the hell is rolling around on the ground with a gun, with their shirt off?

Leea, it's too bad Book Thief wasn't working for you. :( The last part of the book was absolutely incredible.

message 4043: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I hate book covers like this one, but love Brockmann. Ian, if you haven't read the Troubleshooters series you should -- there really isn't much cliche about her books. She really broke the mold in writing about military men.

message 4044: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Oct 27, 2013 02:40PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I'm curious if I can read this spinoff book without having read Troubleshooters first. I have the book, and even though suspense is a genre that I'm not a big fan of, I know you all like the Troubleshooters series.

Reading Troubleshooters will probably never happen for me because of how long it is (I have too many series in progress - don't need something with more than 10 books in it because I rarely read series books back-to-back, which means I'll lose interest before finishing), but if the spinoff can be read without knowing the world, I might give it a go, since it's on book 1.

message 4045: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I don't like romantic suspense either. I have to dig in to it, and will let you know. ;)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Cool. Thanks. If it's minimal stuff to have to learn, I'll give it a go.

message 4047: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I read The Unsung Hero. I vaguely remember liking the young couple more than the main characters...I think the guy was an artist and the woman had some self esteem issues.

message 4048: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Books 1 and 2 are mediocre at best. #3 and on are flipping fantastic. After she published #2 the military allowed her to come on to the base in San Diego and conduct research. The quality of the books after 2 (3 and on) really show the difference.

message 4049: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Regina wrote: "Books 1 and 2 are mediocre at best. #3 and on are flipping fantastic."

Maybe I could strip the DRM and then edit it so all mention of Navy SEALs are changed to 4Recon...

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Hah.

I've had extremely bad luck with military men (present company excluded), so I have never cared to read about them as book heroes.
