Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Oh Geez! I have some catching up to do.

message 3402: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Thanks ladies for the good thoughts.

So I was let got today and got my severance package as I hoped - my CEO was bawling so I had reassure HER (she was telling how it was supposed to be the other way around so we had a good laugh about that.)

But pretty much everybody got an 'end date'. Some people leave in October, others in December, others in February, etc. We went out and had a good celebratory lunch if you can believe it.

message 3403: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Glad things worked out as best they could D.G. You never want to leave under bad terms.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Wow, that's got to be a shock, D.G. I hope that whatever is up next for you is something good.

message 3405: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Aw, thanks! It shouldn't be too difficult to get a new marketing job here in NY but you never know. It wasn't unexpected to me - everybody was a bit shocked when I told them I had been moving my stuff since last week - but I think some people were caught unawares.

The good thing was that I'll get good recommendations. The whole management team told me I could count on them and specially the CEO told me that if I needed anything, I could reach out to her. Anyways, probably I take a couple of days off and then start looking in earnest.

Closure is good. And I am sure as a leader it is so hard to let people go. I would feel awful doing that!

Sandra, just my take (and I am not in the majority) I found Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles, #1) by Melina Marchetta hard to get into and not a great book -- just okay. But I absolutely loved ##2 and 3 in that series. So no matter what - -you have to continue. ;)

message 3409: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments DG - wishing you the best in your job search - that it'll be a short one and an upgrade :)

I'm on a Stephanie Plum kick - tearing thru them fast & furious all the while lol. Man these books lighten my days. I try to space them out but now I'm on a roll and finding it hard to stop. Am about to start Plum Lovin' (Stephanie Plum, #12.5) by Janet Evanovich and Lean Mean Thirteen (Stephanie Plum, #13) by Janet Evanovich

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Lisa wrote: "I'm on a Stephanie Plum kick"

They're good fun but the Morelli / Ranger indecision was driving me insane and I had to give them away.

message 3411: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I think they didn't drive me crazy until 13 or 14. Before that they were good fun. But then I got really frustrated. The last one had LOL moments but still frustrated me.

message 3412: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments The Cuckoo's Calling came in for me at the library today - it was only a 2 month wait...lol

message 3413: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I loved it!! Audio or print?

message 3414: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments print - i'm looking forward to it - going to use it for my metro book (I have about a 40 minute commute one way each day)

message 3415: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments I don't mind the Morelli/Ranger indecision because I like them both and don't really want Steph to choose so I don't let it bother me - I just roll with it. She loves them both - Morelli is the main course and Ranger is dessert :D

message 3416: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic @D.G., Hope all goes well with your upcoming job search!

@Lisa, Even though I've only read 2 in the Plum series, I'm definitely in the Morelli camp! Fun reads!

@Lori, hope your cold is better! The Lady Julia series looks good, the first ones been on my tbr list for a while.

message 3417: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments looks like Lori started Lady Julia without me ;) haha! since Stacia and I decided to hold off a week

message 3418: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Just DNF'd The Free World by David Bezmozgis It's well written and I'm interested in the topic but the story just didn't engage me.

message 3419: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Does anyone know when Possession (Fallen Angels, #5) by J.R. Ward is coming out on paperback? I refuse to pay $19.00 for the damn hard cover.

message 3420: by Regina (last edited Sep 18, 2013 09:27AM) (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I love that cover though Tellulah, but I know what you mean about the story just not engaging you.

Marcella I don't but I completely agree.

I started and finished Unbound by Cara McKenna last night. Most of you know that I have a love affair for McKenna's books. I love how she does characters and the developing of a relationship. She gets that right every time. And she did in this book as well. So this discussion is not a spoiler, it is obvious in the book what is happening. But this book (Unbound) is a lot like the Curio books in a way - in the way that I didn't like those. So I didn't like the Curio books b/c while it disappoints me about myself, I can't get past having the male character have such weaknesses in books. I can't do it. And the male character in Curio is afraid to leave his flat, he lives his entire life in his apartment and becomes dependent on the heroine. So in Unbound (gah, I am going to sound so flipping awful), the "hero" is a recovering alcoholic -- which is not my problem and he has a serious kink and he can ONLY get off when that kink is happening. His fetish has to be in play every time they have sex. And just like McKenna in her other books, she pushes the boundaries of what is comfortable and flips the tables. And I am surprised to find out, that I don't like his kink and it wasn't sexy for me -- I don't want to be with a man who wants to be submissive. Ha! The book is still incredibly well written and developed and I couldn't put it down. But I am still trying to absorb all of it.

LOL I didn't either but would have loved some character progression or story progression (like can she learn to do her job please?) but I know what you mean, it feels so darned good to just laugh while reading. These books were so good for me for awhile.

You know I read one of the Monica McCarty books -- out of order and I thought the relationship scenes and sex scenes were great, but I was bored out of my mind for the entire rest. I can't remember which one it was though - it was her highlander books.

message 3424: by Regina (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I do.

It's a site error. As soon as I purchased it, I got a pop up saying it would not download immediately and they could not give me a time frame for when it would.

I'll just have to start Halfway to the Grave over again. LOL

I agree, Marcella. Plus, I want all my books to match and they're all pb. I've been waiting for the latest BDB, 'Lover at Last' to be released in pb (Oct. 1 - yay!). The hardcover was released in March so possibly a 6-7 month wait for 'Possession' to be available in pb - March/April '14?

message 3429: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments @Regina - character and story progression in the Plum books, yep, you're right about the serious lack of both. Since I'm only halfway thru the series, so far, it hasn't gotten old. Stephanie and Lula are like Lucy and Ethel and I don't think they'll ever become professional bounty hunters. Not sure I want them to because then it wouldn't be as funny. OMG, when Stephanie tried other jobs - hilarious!

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I'm rounding third on The Bone Season. It has that same detail saturation that A Discovery of Witches had but it's not driving me insane...I'm actually enjoying it. Although I just noticed there is a book 2 and 3 in the works...I'm kind of over every author feeling the need to write a series. Give me stand-alones!!!!

The Bone Season (The Bone Season, #1) by Samantha Shannon

I'm also reading Shanna which I have to say is kind of brilliant. Very classy writing and proofreading / editing you just don't see any more. But nearly 700 pages...I think my mind might explode.

Shanna by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss

Soon I'll start Down and Out in Beverly Heels and A Skeleton in the Family....I'm hoping both will be quick and light-hearted and then I have a bunch of ARCs.

Down and Out in Beverly Heels by Kathryn Leigh Scott A Skeleton in the Family (Family Skeleton Mystery #1) by Leigh Perry

message 3433: by D.G. (last edited Sep 18, 2013 06:19PM) (new)

D.G. Thanks for the good wishes, ladies! I decided to take today 'off' (LOL!) but I'll start working on my job search tomorrow. Nothing major, just updating my resume and checking out what's the there. I also need to do some legal stuff to get my severance and finish going to different doctors because my health insurance runs out at the end of the month.

I should probably make a list of the things I need to do by end of the month. :) According to my husband though, I should spend a few days at a spa, relaxing. (I don't deserve that man...I really don't.)

Regina - You're right, being responsible for other people's jobs must terrible!

Anna (Bobs Her Hair) What a nice husband, D.G. Good luck job hunting!

Leea | 1437 comments Finished The Return of Rafe MacKade (The MacKade Brothers, #1) by Nora Roberts and it was mediocre at best.

Now i'm reading Forged in Dreams and Magick (Highland Legends, #1) by Kat Bastion and it's already good. I did laugh when she went back in time and had an O in the process. The historical detail is done very well and the story so far is unique.

"Forged in Dreams and Magic" sounds very interesting. I've added it to my 'to read' pile. My concern is one (or both) of her loves will die.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I am reading The Outside (The Hallowed Ones, #2) by Laura Bickle and it is less than just okay. I am at about 60% and really not liking it.

message 3438: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments reading A Shot in the Dark for a blog tour...but jeez...you can tell the author has some experience in the medical field (I mean, according to her profile she is a nurse)...but man...
humerus was spelt humorous...
the dialogue is very awkward and formal, it doesn't feel read - like he would not do this - vice he wouldn't etc...
and I could just keep going...

I was supposed to do a review/interview - but I may just see if I can switch to the interview because I don't feel right doing neg reviews for blog tours (I'll post it later on though)

Aww that sucks, Regina! I know how you much you liked the first book!

I read two books in the last two days that are 2 stars or less: Immortal Warrior (Immortal Brotherhood, #1) by Lisa Hendrix Succubus on Top (Georgina Kincaid, #2) by Richelle Mead . This is it for me with the Georgina Kinkaid series.

Now I'm starting a re-listen of Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews . For some reason that happened to the BOM in like 3 groups I'm in so I decided to join.

message 3440: by Dee (new)

lol...I just broke up with GCP. I was getting denied every single time (apparently because we scary foreigners are untrustworthy)...but I can deal with that. What annoyed me was they had a special on some e-books by Jill Shalvis....but not only do I not get the special in Australia....I can't even get the book for Kindle. I have to pay 10 times more and have a paper edition shipped internationally.

You can only smash your head into a wall so many times before you fall over. Anyway, no more for me.
