Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments LOL, no. There was a moment when I debated them, but then hearing that they were originally Twilight fanfictions turned me off. I'm not a fan of Twilight and I don't enjoy fanfictions.

BUT, that means that I have no character expectations so I can enjoy sexy Hunnam in all his glory without comparison! :)

I'm not sure. I don't have a Netflix account. I thought it was.

message 3102: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I never heard about that Twilight thing. Totally wouldn't have thought that when reading the trilogy. I guess you can watch the movie and if you like it you can then read the books. From what I hear the movie will be out August 2014.

I will have to check Netflix. I am so behind with a lot of shows.

message 3103: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I think you'll really like it. It's awesome, and Jax is so hot.

message 3104: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Wendy, IMO you're not missing a thing. FSOG was an over-hyped trilogy about a relationally-challenged control freak with BDSM preferences and an ingenue with no real relationship experience who couldn't seem to remember that she was trying to date a control freak with BDSM preferences. The concept of punishment and reward as well as keeping her word when dealing with a control freak caused scintillating dialogue such as, "Don't be mad at me" and "Please don't be mad at me."

So I've got mixed feelings about a movie. But I was digging the pix of Charlie H. I will check out SoA!

message 3105: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments LMMFAO! Lori, that mini-review had me cracking up!

I know I'm repeating myself, but Charlie H is incredibly hot and SOA is a really great intense show.

message 3106: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Ha ha Lori! That was hilarious. Anastasia was annoying most of the time but Christian Gray was beyond dreamy. I loved his character.

message 3107: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I quite enjoyed the book...but I've moved on. I doubt the movie will be worth watching but I'm sure teenage boys will be lining up outside the theatres for a glimpse of a woman's nipple.

message 3108: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments I hadn't read those 50 Shade books yet and hadn't heard about the Twilight connection. That's weird. But your description of the dialog cracked me up, Lori and now I want to see for myself and hope for some laughs :D

LOVE SoA!! The show has something for all age groups, well except for the kidlets - definitely for adult viewing only. I meant for young adults and boomers (like me). We Netflix it - instant stream so we're a season behind. It irritates me that the previous season's dvd isn't released until just before the new season starts so we never get caught up in time to watch it current, unless we buy the dvds and do a marathon viewing. Which we might do. Maybe.

message 3109: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) My apologies to fans of FSOG - my summary is strictly MY opinion. And yes, I admit to being sucked in. I think the appeal to me was the "naughty" concept - an ingenue being introduced to "kinky" sex such as BDSM. And yes, Christian Grey is HOT, but he's also very damaged.

Problem is, the appeal wore off because the story was so thin and the dialogue was worse. Sure, there are some laughs, but mostly, *I* was the one doing eye rolls. AND, while it led me to read other books featuring erotica and BDSM, I realized after reading *those* books, that the BDSM world in FSOG just isn't quite.... real? true? something! But for those of you who are fans of FSOG, again, my opinions are my own.

Lisa - if you're looking for laughs, give it a try. But my advice would be to borrow it, and not buy it until you're sure it's for you.

message 3110: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments but the problem is that 50 shades isn't about BDSM - I know that ppl say it isn't...but many ppl in the lifestyle are aghast about how it is described and used...what C did (for all accounts, since I refuse to read) is not BDSM, it is abuse...SSC is the key thing in a D/s relationship (safe, sane, consensual) - you discuss limits (hard - absolute no-go's and soft - may consider)...it drives me nuts that ppl call it BDSM - soo much better stuff out there

message 3111: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Dee - exactly!

message 3112: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I couldn't get past 20%. The writing for me was bad. I hate the set up and the characters. And for me the twilight comparison was so glaring.

I love the actor chose to play Christian but I guarantee you there are no men on business who look like that. If they are - I sure as heck haven't seen them!

I heard they offered the role first to the actor that player Edward.

message 3113: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I haven't read it either but I've read similar things from people that practice BDSM and read the book.

message 3114: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) It was "an education" for me to read FSOG! And, as I said, initially I was sucked in, just because I hadn't really ventured into the erotica genre and I didn't know a thing about BDSM. Which is why, being me, I started doing some research about BDSM and reading other books. I don't participate in the lifestyle, but I recognized that it's a lot more than described in FSOG. And I totally got the disgust by those in that lifestyle.

Since I'm not a Twilight fan, I didn't know about the fanfic thing until much later. But when I found out it was originally Bella and Edward... eeesh! And suddenly, my irritations with the Ana character made so much sense!

And other than the BDSM thing, my main irritation is with Anastasia/Ana. She's so CLUELESS! And for an educated woman with a new degree, she has absolutely no life experience, common sense, or relationship experience. THAT was one of my main issues. Twenty-somethings these days might now be world-weary (nor should they be), but... c'mon!

message 3115: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments James readily admits that she did no research into the lifestyle...i'm just waiting for something to happen...some couple to decide to play like in the book and something...its bound to...but that is the skeptic in me

My husband and I purchase the seasons before the shows come out. SoA and Walking Dead are his two favorite shows, so he collects both of them.

Lori (lorimcd) Reading A Bad Day for Sorry (Bad Day, #1) by Sophie Littlefield and trying to finish up The Passion of the Purple Plumeria (Pink Carnation, #10) by Lauren Willig .

I have TOO MANY BOOKS right now! And I have to stop placing holds on books, 'cuz I forget how quickly my library fulfills them. Now I've got 10+ hard backs and 10+ ebooks from the library, not to mention a whole bunch of ebooks that I picked up late August, like Shooting Scars (The Artists Trilogy, #2) by Karina Halle ... I'm sort of afraid to read "Shooting Scars" - not sure why, except maybe for Javier?

Was having an issue with receiving Kindle versions of books from Netgalley. And of course, after I filed a service request, they fixed whatever it was on their end... and I have 10+ Netgalley ebooks to get through now.

When it rains, it pours! Feast or famine?! (What other cliches can I apply?)

message 3118: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Oh my goodness! I feel so exposed, lol. Stella hardesty is like my dear friend, I hope you love her! :D

I know the feeling, there are so many books I need to read this week and next for NG and E. Ugh, why did I do this to myself. And on top of it, someone left my firm - and I inherited all of his cases. So I am going non stop.

message 3119: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Haha! That to read list is mammoth.

message 3120: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I'm drowning in mine... seriously. It's becoming oppressive.

I really really want to read A Bad Day for Sorry, can't wait to read your review.

message 3121: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) The cover of "A Bad Day For Sorry" is a little misleading... I was expecting a 20-something from the photo.

message 3122: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments yeah, we aren't even going to talk about TBR piles ;)

message 3123: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I am starting Revealing Us (Inside Out, #3) by Lisa Renee Jones .

message 3124: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Lori have you read my reviews for the series? How did you pick it up?

message 3125: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 419 comments Angie wrote: "I am starting Revealing Us (Inside Out, #3) by Lisa Renee Jones."

I'm glad book 3 is out. I need to get back to the journals and start book 2. I didn't want to get too deep and have to wait to long.

message 3126: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Yeah, I know that the female lead is not in her 20's thus why I want to read it. haha!

Yeah, not TBR pile talk... yikes!! lol!

message 3127: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Hey Leea...how are you handling this heat wave we are having? I do not know about you but I am over it!

message 3128: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Regina wrote: "Lori have you read my reviews for the series? How did you pick it up?"

Regina, I picked it up from someone here, so it probably was you! But I haven't read your reviews yet, just the book's blurb. Maybe seeing that YOU read it and that Leea wanted to was enough to put it on my list.

Not very far in right now, but I'm liking it!

message 3129: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments That really thrills me for be author. This series needs more attention. Woohoo!

message 3130: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Geez, I just checked to see of SoA S5 was out yet (forgot it's Sept.) and yep, it IS! But Netflix doesn't have S5 yet so it looks like I'm going to have to buy it :D Amazon has it for $30. Oh man, and S6 starts Sept. 10! Shoot. That means serious marathon viewing of S5 which I hate to gobble a whole season up like that in a couple days.

You're kidding - FSOG was supposed to be about Belle and Edward?!

message 3131: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments yep - 50SoG started out as fanfic called Master of the Universe (if you look online you can sometimes still find a cached copy of it for free)

Dear Author did a pretty good comparison article between twilight/master of the universe and 50 shades

message 3132: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I was just as shocked about the Twilight thing as well. Can't wrap my head around it.

message 3133: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Dee were you the one that said once you found out it was about Bella and Edward it made sense that you found Ana so annoying? Funny thing is I thought the same thing. Ha ha!

message 3134: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments i think it was Lori? I haven't read Twilight (made it 10 pages before it went flying)...and refuse to read 50 shades

message 3135: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Yep it was me who realized why Ana is so annoying... she's supposed to be Bella. I'm surprised they didn't get that Kristen girl to play Ana; she's perfect for the part. *snicker*

OK, that was bad. Maybe the movie will be better. Just can't imagine how they'll rate it, though. NC-17? If they try to do a PG-13 version, I'll vomit.

message 3136: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments There is no way Kristen Stewart can pull off playing Ana. She is so one dimensional.

I agree. The way the book is it needs to be rated R or NC-17. If it is anything less than rated R I am not sure I will be in a rush to see it. (Not that I am pervy but I think it will take away from the movie).

message 3137: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I had no doubt in my mind that they weren't going to get Rob P to play Christian Grey. It doesn't seem like his thing.

I do think it's interesting that the people who are angry and starting the petition over who was cast in the roles are choosing theeeeee worst pictures of Charlie Hunnam they can find. I mean, I have no idea if he looks like Christian Grey is described, but the man is not ugly by any means. He's gorgeous, and he has a gorgeous body.

Trust me, it could be a LOT worse.

Also, all this outcry that it's not Alexis Bledel and Matt Bomer is a shame. I mean, who's to say that they were even remotely interested? Or how about, maybe they were but they were TERRIBLE in the roles, lmao. Physical similarities aren't everything. It's always gonna be more about pulling off the personality and becoming the character.

It's so silly to me. Be annoyed if you want to, but to start a petition... people need to lighten up.

message 3138: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Lol. I agree.

message 3139: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Just finished my billionth reread of Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger the beauty and elegance of the writing and the way the characters are realized leaves me in awe and in love with the Glass family.

I didn't think Ana was particularly layered.

message 3142: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I just don't KStew can pull it off. Just don't see her in the role. Ana is a little classy and KStew is so not

I had no idea Robert Pattinson was considered. I really don't see him as CG.

message 3143: by Angie Elle, BaBAMB!!! (last edited Sep 05, 2013 08:10PM) (new)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I couldn't get past the constant 'crap' and 'double crap' from her inner dialogue.

I don't see the guy from SoA as Christian, either. But he is incredibly sexy, as Christian is supposed to be. I think he's going to surprise a lot of people.

message 3144: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Yummm I love those pictures Wendy. I need to watch that show again. But I never watch Tv.

Yes and apparently at least one features this family. I'm so excited!

message 3147: by D.G. (new)

D.G. I need to watch SoA!

Without that beard and with dark hair and a suit, I'll bet he's going to look fine as Christian. People have NO imagination, like beards cannot be shaved and hair cannot be dyed (look at what people said about the guy they casted as Jamie!)

message 3148: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (last edited Sep 06, 2013 07:43AM) (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I know, D.G. I was thinking the exact same thing. It's like the outcry when Hutcherson and Lawrence were cast as Peeta and Katniss. Sometimes it's about the acting and the looks can be altered.

And yes, to Regina and Ladyhawk... those pictures are scrumptious! I love both of them. He is SO fine. Honestly, I've said it before but it bears repeating, he's the only reason I'll watch the movie.

He's who the author wanted originally, and I heard he was approached first but said no. I think though, James wanted him because that's who she saw when she originally wrote the fanfic, lol. Since it was technically Bella and Edward in an alternate world.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments That is really funny.

Starting Spook Squad (PsyCop, #7) by Jordan Castillo Price
I finished A Bad Day for Romance (Bad Day, #5) by Sophie Littlefield which was fun and Among Others by Jo Walton which was beautiful. And I am listening to The Book of Blood and Shadow by Robin Wasserman
