Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I just started Steam & Sorcery. After finishing Lady of Devices, which I loved despite its faults, I went looking for more Steampunk. I also jumped into Penelope which is a regency romance and riotously funny.

Steam & Sorcery (Gaslight Chronicles, #1) by Cindy Spencer Pape Penelope (Fairweather Sisters, #1) by Anya Wylde

message 2952: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) I beta-read Penelope (Fairweather Sisters, #1) by Anya Wylde and thought it would be good if the author would tone it down a bit. She didn't appreciate my comments... Ian, let me know what you think.

message 2953: by Ian (last edited Aug 27, 2013 03:31PM) (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I'm enjoying it, but I know what you mean...it is very full on. Almost like the story is only there as a means to get from one funny moment to the next.

Lori McD wrote: "I beta-read Penelope and thought it would be good if the author would tone it down a bit.

That's kind of bizarre. Why ask for an opinion if you don't want it? I kind of think authors should be especially thankful for the negative comments. A positive comment doesn't help anything except your ego, but a negative comment can help you become better.

message 2954: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) That's what I thought - a little too ridiculous, and not very Regency, but fun. Oh well... I'm off her list of beta-readers - LOL!

Glad you're enjoying it. Lots of people seem to think it's a riot; I thought it was too much of a riot. ;-)

Ian & Lori: Was glad to read your thoughts on the author, Anya Wilde.

I have both

The Wicked Wager by Anya Wylde and Penelope (Fairweather Sisters, #1) by Anya Wylde on Kindle. They were free, in fact I was very naïve at the time and when the author friended me I didn't realize she was friending a LOT of Goodreads members! But I guess that's one way to get her name out there.

Still haven't read them although they look like quick fluff reads.

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments beta-readers are peple that an author sends their manuscript to so they can read over it and give her their opions and stuff. At least so much as I am to understand it.

message 2959: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments A beta reader is someone who reads a book before it's been released. They offer advice, pick up mistakes and give their impression.

Leea | 1437 comments I finished Death Angel by Linda Howard and I really enjoyed this book. I loved the ending :)

Tomorrow I hope to finally start Covet, sorry for the delay.

message 2972: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Wendy &Ian, thanks for filling in the blanks for me. I was doing a video cover letter this afternoon.

Peggy, I really liked Wicked Wager, which is how I got involved with the author, and why she asked me to beta read for her originally. But she didn't appreciate my take on Penelope, so.... But I do beta read for 2 other authors, and they're great about suggestions and questions.

Lori (lorimcd) Marcella, I liked Gold Digger. Let me know what you think.

Lee's, I was very surprised by Death Angel... not at all what I expected.

Leea | 1437 comments Lori, did you like it? Death angel...

message 2977: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Finished Charming (Pax Arcana, #1) by Elliott James While I loved the male POV and dynamic between John and Sig, my initial enthusiasm for the book started to wane in the first third. I felt that the forward momentum of the story kept getting stalled for mythological exposition. Also, the A plot mission left me kind of meh. I wish there had been more time hanging with the characters because the story really came to life in those moments.

My copy is a little messed up. It keeps going back to the beginning of the book.

I think I'm going to be starting that after I finish the books I'm on.

Finished Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass, #2) by Sarah J. Maas and Death Angel by Linda Howard and really liked both of those. The assassin tie between both books was coincidental.

Almost finished with The Shining (The Shining, #1) by Stephen King and that one's been good too. It might be a miracle if I end up liking 3 books in a row. That doesn't happen often lately.

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Finished Gold Digger by Aleksandr Voinov last night. Loved it just wish it was longer.

Started Wethering The Storm (The Storm, #2) by Samantha Towle and got two chapters in before headed to bed. Look forward to continuing it.

Ha ha! I love the Hot Bunch. I read the first book in the KGI series and those guys are giving the Hot Bunch a run for their money.

message 2983: by Anita (new)

Anita Anderson | 9 comments I just finished Seven years to sin. Hot, steamy, nice and amazingly different from anything I have read before.

message 2984: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I walked away from Steam & Sorcery (DNF @ 70%). It started well but by the time I finally gave up it had become completely banal.

Started Storm Front by Jim Butcher which is OK at the moment. Am thinking of starting another brick...Daughter of the Forest. It would be my second attempt at it....the first time I had so much on that I put it down and eventually forgot to pick it up again. This time I might try the audio but 26 hours is kind of huge for me.

Steam & Sorcery (Gaslight Chronicles, #1) by Cindy Spencer Pape Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher Daughter of the Forest (Sevenwaters, #1) by Juliet Marillier

message 2985: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I've been wanting to read Dresden Files but something else always keeps jumping in the way.

Daughter of the Forest... I liked it, but it was a little slow for me.

message 2986: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Re Dresden Files, I know I and others say this a lot -- but his first two in that series are mediocre (at best). #3 and #4 are better than just good and #5++++ are flipping fantastic. I knew that going in, so I purposely just pushed through 1 and 2 to get to 3. After 1, I actually only listened to the audio of 2-4, and then at 5 I returned to reading and then audio - -these are books I re-read over and over again.

It is weird at #3, they get so much better and so much more complex.

Sorry I am MIA. Life is really crazy.

message 2987: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I've heard that before too. I have all of them, but I just haven't gotten around to picking them up.

Regina, I'm still planning on Spook Squad tomorrow. Are you gonna be able to? Do you want me to wait for you?

message 2992: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) I didn't like the first KGI book... I felt that the heroine was too perfect and everyone pussy-footed around her. But the brothers are hot!

She went through a major trauma Lori. Ha ha! She seemed perfect because they saw her as a daughter. No one ever admits flaws in their kids.

The first one wasn't the best but it is a good start. And the brothers are all hot. Lol!

message 2996: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments I finished Covet by Tracey Garvis-Graves and I really enjoyed it. Now i'm starting Holier Than Thou by Laura Buzo but I haven't had any time to read today.

I'm also in the mood for a HR romance right now so I may start the ARC of Defiant in the Viking's Bed by Joanna Fulford

message 2998: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Is anyone interested in doing a buddy read for Spook Squad (PsyCop, #7) by Jordan Castillo Price ?

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I think Wendy and Regina were going to read it? I'm still far behind in the series. I've only read the first two.

Angie wrote: "I really need to take a break from Entice (Exquisite, #2) by Ella Frank. I've moved on to Willing Victim by Cara McKenna."

Woo Hoo for Willing Victim! I saw that McKenna had another book up on Netgalley but I didn't request it yet because I didn't know if I wanted to read it right now (the book is already published, so there's no release date I can push back).

Finished The Shining (The Shining, #1) by Stephen King and although it dragged in parts, the ending was crazy. I am SO excited for Danny's book coming out soon because he was my favorite character in Shining.

Starting Conjured by Sarah Beth Durst and Charming (Pax Arcana, #1) by Elliott James with Ash.

message 3000: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I need to read The Shining, I heard it's a good one.

Marcella, Regina and I are starting Spook Squad together on Sunday, if you want to wait I'd love to chat about it in the Psycop thread!
