Lori (lorimcd) OMG, Ian - that comment about A Discovery of Witches is hilarious!

Lisa - hoping to get to Shooting Scars soon, so I can hop into that thread and see what's roaming around that mind of yours... you have good theories!

Kay - hope you're liking the Mark of the Lion series. I love party planning! Wish I could help you... I'm great at the planning and the doing; I'm always taking ideas from Hostess with the Mostest and modifying them to fit. I love to work with chocolate, too, and I just learned how to do fondant cakes.

OK... the Sept Book Read - I can't find books 1 & 2 together. Help?!

Lisa | 383 comments Ian, your comments about A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness cracked me up! I just got thru that part about all the food/wine smelling going on. Did I already mention how I've read this book and book 2 already but can't remember it/them? Hmm...I wonder why...but after chapter 3, it's starting to come back - sorta remember.

While listening to DOW on my ipod, have started Spider's Bite (Elemental Assassin, #1) by Jennifer Estep on my kindle. But barely into it yet so have no opinion so far.

Is there a thread for Shooting Scars or do we discuss on the Sins & Needles board?

Seems to only be available as a paper edition. I bought book two for the Kindle and will just read that. Although it was expensive for such an old book ($9.99). For that money I would normally expect a cover that doesn't make me gag.

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I'm enjoying the quick reads as of late, so I'm going to start Taking Him Down (Wilinski's #2) by Meg Maguire .

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I thought I was the only one that enjoyed that series. The first 3 were a little slow for me but after that I really got into it.

No, but I heard it was pretty bad. : /

message 2909: by Ladyhawk (new)

Ladyhawk I saw it this evening and really enjoyed it. Sure much was left out but for the most part, they did a pretty good job. This is the first I've heard any one saying its bad.
I would have preferred a different Jace but all in all I'd give it a strong 8!

It must have been a fan reacting to the material left out. This type of thing really agitates fans. Remember Harry potter. Many wanted everything in the movies, which can't be done.

message 2911: by Carina (new)

Carina Last week I read Down to You (The Bad Boys, #1) by M. Leighton , which was OK.
Tonight I just finished Up to Me (The Bad Boys, #2) by M. Leighton which was blah to me.
I'm just happy it's over.

So true Anna!

I must say A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness probably appeals more to those who really enjoy historical fiction vs contemporary. Plus, lots of detail can become tedious to a reader and some parts of DoW certainly get very detailed. But I tend to enjoy every word if its done well.

With a few exceptions, I don't really care for contemporary stories as I read to escape reality.

An exception would be Inferno (Robert Langdon, #4) by Dan Brown . But lots of historical references and fun symbolic riddles. I'm halfway through. Can't say it's Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons, or even The Lost Symbol quality, it's lacking in entertainment for me.

message 2913: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments The fans can be pretty brutal. Considering the movie was based on a book I think they did a good job with. Fans can't be too critical about things being left out. Sometimes things in writing don't work out so well on screen. I was satisfied with the result.

message 2914: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I saw it with my daughter yesterday. It was fun. It wasnt the best movie ever but a lot better than I was expecting. I had heard Magnus wouldn't be in - so glad he was! The actor played him is beautiful. We really enjoyed it - and I can't wait to see the next one.

Does anyone have access to the story when it was still fan fiction and it was to Draco adventures or something like that? I am interested in reading it.

I disagree ladyhawk - sorry. . I love historical. I love lots of details. And I love in depth stories that take place with research and a university setting and a strongly hated Discovery.

message 2916: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I think a good director will push over a few sacred cows when they make a film adaptation of a much loved book. IMO the best of the Harry Potter films was The Prisoner of Azkaban which was also the most widely criticised for departing from the books.

It's not easy...they need to be true to the spirit of the book while knowing which stuff from the book they can leave out or change for clarity.

message 2917: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Ian that was my favorite too. It was a movie and a story in itself - the book didn't have to be read first. My criticism of the the movies (especially #4) is not about what wasnt included but because they were bad.

Understood Regina, not every book is for everyone. I do understand some of the criticism of DoW , but I'm a fan of the content and therefore the story.

message 2919: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Definitely not every book is for everyone. I completely agree, I just meant it wasn't because I was more used to contemporary. :)

although I had a lot of fun seeing the last 3 in the theaters (5, 6, 7 part 1 and 7 part 2). I went with my daughter, who was also reading them. For the last two, we held hands and cried during our favorite parts. It was very emotional -- but not just because of the movie. We are such huge fans. We had so much fun seeing Mortal Instruments yesterday, we were laughing, making fun or impressed -- we liked it. And we were both surprised at how scary it came off too. I wonder though if people hadn't read the book, would they like it as much? The world building happens in huge info dumps and basically happens over a course of a few conversations. I still enjoyed it though!

message 2921: by Crystal (new)

Crystal Navarro (kanarenee) I just finished Gio (5th Street, #2) by Elizabeth Reyes , and I think it's time to switch from the romances for at least one book.

I'm pulling Room by Emma Donoghue off my bookshelf. I got it at B&N off the former bestseller's shelf for $5.98, so we'll see if this distraction from all the romance I've been reading is a good one :)

message 2922: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I am happy with the Mortal Instruments. The guy who played Magnus was a pleasant surprise. I still have issues with the casting. I did not really care for the one who played Isabelle. Jace is still questionable. Jaime was a little scary in this movie.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I really liked Magnus' look but his voice/mannerisms were not what I'd been expecting. I always pictured Magnus with a lower pitched voice, and my son thought he'd be smoother. But he looked good. ;)

Finished Obsession by Jennifer L. Armentrout and was not a fan. There's one scene that really set me off. It was too (view spoiler).

message 2924: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I thought he was a bad actor but very pretty.

message 2925: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I didn't have a problem with his acting. He wasn't in there that much for me to determine that. He was one of the highlights of the movie for me.

message 2926: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I thought his delivery was off and just not done well but he was still a highlight. I loved having him in there. I did like the casting for all the characters. There was no character I thought was poorly cast.

message 2927: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I had an issue with Isabelle. I though Jaime did well as Jace but I think they could have made him look more like how Jace was described in the book. He was a little scary to me in the movie (crazy hair).

message 2928: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I thought Isabelle was fine but I never was a fan of her character. So maybe that affects it. I liked jace's appearance but then before I was married I always went for that type of guy.

message 2929: by Lori (last edited Aug 26, 2013 03:34PM) (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Marcella wrote: "I saw The Mortal Instruments movie today. Has anyone else seen it?"

Yep, Marcella - I saw it over the weekend. My thoughts are in the Movies thread. But I love Jamie as Jace - I loved him in "Anonymous". Yeah, he might not be as pretty as I pictured Jace, but I like him as an actor and for the part. Alec seemed... harsh in the movie to me, not as thoughtful as in the book; yeah, he was harsh with Clary, but that's the only side we saw of him in the movie.

Loved Magnus, although his outfit was... hilarious! I wished we'd had more time with him.

Overall, really enjoyed City of Bones the movie. I knew, going in, it would be different from the book. Except for 2 things (in the Movies thread), I was good with it and looking forward to the next movie already.

message 2930: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I thought Jace was sexy, lmao. I go for his look too, Regina. He was actually sexier to watch than the pictures of him.

Magnus was a bit of a let down. He looked SOOO good in the images, and he's a sexy guy, but he didn't actually pull off the Magnus personality to me.

Izzy grew on me over the course of the movie. In the beginning I didn't see it, but by the end she had cemented it for me.

Simon was pretty decent.

Jocelyn and Luke, no complaints.

Valentine, I was not digging the Braveheart hair, but otherwise no complaints.

I wasn't a fan of Alec. He was saying the words but I wasn't seeing the character in him.

message 2931: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Great insights ladies!

message 2932: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I didn't like the hair either.

Simon was a cutie.

message 2933: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Watch the BBC series Misfits and you'll fall in love with the actor who plays Simon. He's a brilliant comic talent. Although his character on that show is such a douche.

message 2934: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments When I heard him talk in an interview I was floored. He hides his accent so well.

Speaking of which, I loved how in the movie everyone had British accents for their characters when I do not remember any mention of them being British. I even think Luke may have had an Irish accent. Ha ha!

message 2935: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Haha... I thought that the Shadowhunters and those from that world did. I mean, that's where their from, right?

message 2936: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Aren't they from Idris, which is like on another plane of existence (or am I totally off the mark...I thought they said you can't find it on a map)? I need to do a re-read of this series. I am so confused. Lol!

What did you all think about the Silent Brothers?

message 2937: by Peggyzbooksnmusic (new)

Peggyzbooksnmusic I'm about 90% through A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness and am loving it! Although I can see where it wouldn't be to everyone's taste in reading. I'm one of those who love lots of details even if at first it seems slow going. I'll admit that I was wondering when there would be more action and adventure in ADOW and think it really gets to that point about 80% into the book. Plus I'm getting the feeling that #1 is setting the reader up for the continuation that will be in #2 Shadow of Night (All Souls Trilogy, #2) by Deborah Harkness

This reminds me of how I struggled with some of the books in the Outlander series; especially #2 Dragonfly in Amber (Outlander, #2) by Diana Gabaldon and the first part of #5 The Fiery Cross (Outlander, #5) by Diana Gabaldon . But I stuck to them and finally realized how important they were to the rest of the series.

IMO, reading is so personal. That's why we all have different tastes in what we enjoy in art and how we relate to different writing styles and storylines.

Well, long enough post for today! :D

message 2938: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments They are from Idris, which is another plane of existence, but I thought that plane was layered in the London UK area. Sort of like how in Harry Potter Hogsmeade and Hogwarts were not accessible by humans, so on another plane, but still you'd have to be in London to find it.

They did a good job with the Silent brothers, but even reading the books I struggled with the way they looked because they were too much like The Bringers on Buffy. I think it was one of the things that people said Clare lifted from other writers. (The big scandal, lol.)

She just changed the eye symbols to lips sewed shut. But both groups were silent and both groups were blind, and lived in the dark. VERY similar.

So anyway, all that was to say, I'm probably biased when it comes to that because I wasn't fond of that story arch in the books and so wasn't impressed with them in the movie.

message 2939: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments You may be right Wendy. Damn if I can remember. As I said I need a major re-read.

I actually thought the Silent Brothers were portrayed just how I imagined them in the book.

message 2940: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments They did totally look just as she described them in the book. For sure.

message 2941: by Ladyhawk (last edited Aug 26, 2013 08:47PM) (new)

Ladyhawk Valentine, I was not digging the Braveheart hair, but otherwise no complaints
Ha! Ya what was up with that. Valentine was harsh right off the bat. I too like Jamie as an actor but just wasn't Jace for me. And Isobell just seemed too old for a 17 year old.
The more I think about it the more my head spins with all the detail in the book and was what being conveyed in the movie. And like Regina said, wonder if those who have not read the books related to it. I repeat, I enjoyed it!!

message 2942: by Ladyhawk (new)

Ladyhawk Regina wrote: "Definitely not every book is for everyone. I completely agree, I just meant it wasn't because I was more used to contemporary. :)"

Got it! Sorry to keep coming back to this folks. I'm not a staunch fan of DoW and not sure why I'm compelled to keep defending it. I almost didn't read it either just because of the Title. I just didn't want anyone on the fence about reading it to be dissuaded to read it and miss out on what could be an enjoyable read for them. I like it because it's one of those stories that keeps you in play long after you've finished it.

Not unlike JK with Harry Potter. The reader can delight in historical facts, figures, places that the author so cunningly interwove into the story. Few stories have done that for me.

I'm also reading The Juliette Society, it's different but at about 23% that's where things go a little... well go check out the cringe worthy thread. lol! I think i'll just finish to see what happens with the whole thing.

Sandra | 27 comments You've had a pretty interesting chat about TMI movie. I loved your insights and hopefully I'll be seeing it this weekend. I've realised that I've forgotten a lot since I read it, but this shouldn't matter if they manage to convey the story well. I'm not the type of fan who likes the book adaptation to the letter. That usually doesn't work out.

Meanwhile, I've read Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake (Love By Numbers, #1) by Sarah MacLean and now onto something different, Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy, #1) by Karina Halle .

I really liked it, Tellulah. I had some issues towards the end, though. For a moment Ralston wasn't Ralston anymore and I found the last 20% way too predictable.

Lori (lorimcd) Kay, I haven't read any other Francine Rivers books, but some of my GFs swear by them.

And I'm always available for party planning advice! I'm helping my good friend/SIL with her daughter's 2 yr old party in Sept. She & I just did our niece's baby shower with The Little Lion King theme. We did a baby bump cake in the colors with a baby lion's paw over the bump, plus themed food like Gorilla Grapes, Hakuna Matater Chips, Bugs-n-Grubs, and Jungle Juice at The Watering Hole.

I won't be able to start Covet by Tracey Garvis-Graves 'til later this week... just got approved today, and I'm trying to start the Linda Howard book tonight.

FOUND the Group Sept Read book, but waiting for my library to get it in. Hopefully, it'll be ready by Sept 1.
