Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I finished Quinn's Need (Whispering Pines Ranch, #2) by S.J.D. Peterson , which I really enjoyed. Now onto the next one Ty's Obsession (Whispering Pines Ranch, #3) by S.J.D. Peterson .

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I can't write anything coherent right now because I am crying! I cried on and off during the may 30% of the book. Gah I am a mess. I started crying when she walked out of the school.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I think I need to give up the drink. I'm seeing double.

lol...I can't even remember how it ended (view spoiler). (view spoiler) I'm much better than I was but I've also had to deal with it in the past few years. (view spoiler)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Oh man, yeah... Regina, that ending is killer! I cried so hard in that book too. Did you finish so I can talk in spoiler tags freely?

message 1605: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments LOL Ian -- the tears made me double post. ;)

Depression is hard, I am so sorry. I have been through it myself. I went through the emotions (view spoiler) I am starting The Piper's Son by Melina Marchetta right away.

message 1606: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments yes -- spoiler tag and discuss please!! :D I finished.

message 1607: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments It was so hard because (view spoiler).

I hope you like The Piper's Son. I liked that one even more.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I just read this in an interview with her about Mia's breakdown:

Would you be willing to share a difficult teen experience or challenge that you feel shaped the adult you became?

To a certain degree I wrote about my mother’s breakdown in Saving Francesca. Different women. Different lives, and I was a different age than Francesca, but the one thing my mum and Mia have in common is that they are both so resilient. It’s taught me that breakdowns and depression and anxiety can happen to anyone and it has absolutely nothing to do with weakness. The strongest people I know have struggled with mental illness or whatever the politically correct term is these days. It also taught me that regardless of the darkness of that period, there is hope beyond it.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments And it looks like she will have a short story appear in Just Between Us by Maya Linden -- according to the interview, her character will at some point cross paths with Jimmy.

message 1610: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Oh my - which book has you all crying? Is it Saving Francesca? Not sure I want to read it!

I finished On the Island last night and it was SO good. Still thinking about it today and I think that I probably dreamed about it last night.

I think I remember reading that somewhere, actually.

Lisa, yeah it's Saving Francesca.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I'm reading The Best Man by Kristan Higgins which I'm liking a lot. Very cute, very fluffy. I'm also reading The Dr Pepper Prophecies which is independently released and a bit rough around the edges but I like the underlying story. Will start The Cat, the Quilt, and the Corpse in the next day or so.

The Best Man by Kristan Higgins The Dr Pepper Prophecies by Jennifer Gilby Roberts The Cat, the Quilt and the Corpse (A Cats in Trouble Mystery, #1) by Leann Sweeney

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments You all are making me want to re-read Saving Francesca. I don't remember getting emotional at all. Now, I'm wondering if I was in a weird reading funk when I read it?

Finished Trapped (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #5) by Kevin Hearne and was so happy that we got double payout in (view spoiler) I loved her earth binding scene.

Still working on World War Z An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks but not at the same frantic pace anymore because we saw the movie yesterday (which was good) so I don't have this need to have to try to push and finish before seeing the movie, since we went earlier than expected.

Started Secret Sister by Emelle Gamble and it's surprisingly good so far. The idea had me curious but my expectations were low, so I'm happy that it's turning out a lot better than expected. Let's hope it keeps up.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I am at a block party today and we had two games, so sorry i haven't responded to all the posts. I just wanted to say I am reading (Yay!!!) The Piper's Son by Melina Marchetta -- I may create a new shelf called "Wendy Made Me Do It".

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I agree completely! Every single character is rich and multifaceted.

How far are you in The Piper's Son?

Your 'Wendy Made Me Do It' shelf is hilarious! Everyone should be pimping out Melina Marchetta's books!

message 1621: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Polished off a few books yesterday... had a day (finally) where I could just take a ME break. And since my tummy wasn't feeling so hot, I decided to take it by reading all day.

Finished off Mary Daheim's Just Desserts (Bed-and-Breakfast Mysteries #1) by Mary Daheim which was OK.

But I really, really liked Viking's Prize by Tanya Anne Crosby by Tanya Anne Crosby - great Viking book! Wish there was a follow-up.

Found Bound by Blood (Cauld Ane, #1) by Tracey Jane Jackson and Bound by Fire (Cauld Ane, #2) by Tracey Jane Jackson by accident - I think I got the 1st one as a free ebook... interesting mix of clean romance about immortals with a dash of Christianity. I can't quite call them paranormal romances, but I suppose that's what they are. They aren't perfect - there's some gaps in the writing. But overall, the plots and characters pulled me in.

Also read an Agatha Christie that I'd never heard of before, They Came to Baghdad by Agatha Christie . Loved it! Spunky heroine! Set in the 50s!

message 1623: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Stacia, I loved "Trapped" too!

The next book, book 6 Hunted (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #6) by Kevin Hearne , is available at Netgalley. But you can't publish reviews or use any quotes until the book officially comes out. They want you to check the quotes against the final book. Not sure why no reviews, though... I'd think they'd want the advance word-of-mouth.

But it's a AWESOME book! One of my favorites in the series so far.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments My wifi/power is out so I am waiting to download Come Alive (Experiment in Terror, #7) by Karina Halle but I bought it!!!!

Lisa | 383 comments @ Dee - Ah, yes. (view spoiler)

YES, I bought Come Alive (Experiment in Terror, #7) by Karina Halle today but need to skim/reread the previous book to refresh my rotten memory.

And thanks for that reminder about Hunted (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #6) by Kevin Hearne before I used my Audible credit on something else! whew

message 1628: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Oh man! I finished Come Alive (Experiment in Terror, #7) by Karina Halle already! *sigh* And the waiting game for the next book begins all over again.

This book is INTENSE. And so... important in the Dex & Perry world. I thought I was going to have to throw my Kindle at the wall at one point and start cussing Karina Halle or start bawling like a baby. Hoping the crisis is averted; so many questions answered and so many yet to be answered - some even to still be asked.

Are we going to talk about the book in the Experiment in Terror thread?

You've got me nervous. I'm not sure I can handle more heartache with these two.

Brace yourself. It's one of those books where it's tough to know which end is up. Just keep reading. It has that "feel" to it, like "Lying Season" did. But it's not that book... I can't say anything more.

What I will say is that YOU, Wendy, have some amazing powers of perception. I am in awe of you right now.

You got me itching to just have you tell me, hahahaha.

message 1632: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments I just started reading Come Alive after skimming the beginning and end of Into the Hollow and jogging my memory. Now I'm wondering what you're talking about Lori - eek - and getting a little nervous. Will I be losing sleep tonight, not being able to put this down. Although it will be laid aside while watching Trueblood in 20 minutes.

It doesn't matter anyway because I'll be reviewing it tomorrow night, which is the night before it comes out. Not that I pay much attention to the rules. Often, I'll post my review early on here just to get it out the way, then wait until a month before pub date and post a copy over there, so they get the time limit they're looking for. I just use a disclaimer that the quotes may not match up with the final copy.

Finished Secret Sister by Emelle Gamble and I had mixed feelings. I love the idea of reading a book where one person takes over another person's body in death, and the story itself worked for me, but I didn't really like the characters and many of their actions. I might need to find another book with this theme to read and see how it goes.

message 1635: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I have it too! But I can't start it for a few days.

Leea, you don't have to wait for me if you want to start it first. I'll read it as soon as I can. :)

message 1636: by D.G. (new)

D.G. So I'm listening to Wallbanger by Alice Clayton , which I'm sort of enjoying. There have been many funny situations (the business of Purina and Clive was just hysterical) but the heroine is so full of drama! She needs to get over herself.

message 1637: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I am sorry I am at work now and have access to power -- but we don't have power at home right now so I couldn't respond. I was supposed to be reading Piper's Son, but I am not sure -- now that I was able to download Come Alive (thanks to my firm's wifi - -gah, it is amazing how dependent on power we are). I won't be reading until my train ride home, I may succumb to Dex.

Leea did you want me to wait -- I can wait if you like. :) Due to my power going out on Saturday, I haven't read at all!!!!!!

message 1638: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments No don't wait for me. I'm going to read it with Wendy later in the week. I'm still slowly reading thru under the Dome.

No power since sat. That's crazy. Why?

message 1639: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) I'm not loving the all Dex POV in Come Alive (Experiment in Terror, #7) by Karina Halle but I'm only about 30% into it so maybe that will change.

Got A Really Awesome Mess by Trish Cook off NG and quite enjoyed it. Thought the teens had really believable voices and it didn't feel preachy at all.

message 1640: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I didn't get a chance to read much this weekend but I did finish Uncharted An "On the Island" Novella (On the Island, #1.5) by Tracey Garvis-Graves which was okay. It was just a short & cute companion novella so nothing as great as On the Island.

I bought Come Alive too but haven't started it yet. Maybe later on this week.

Work has been super busy and I'm stressing out a bit so I haven't had a chance to read at work lately. Hopefully, it'll die down next week.

Regina, I hope your power comes back. Sounds awful to be without for a few days.

message 1641: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Stacia, thanks for the tips on handling those reviews.

Regina, hope you get your power reliably back soon! You'll love Come Alive! (I think.)

message 1642: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments Kay...are we going to start Heart of Obsidian (Psy-Changeling, #12) by Nalini Singh today? If so, I will start it tonight when I get home.

message 1643: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Regina, hope your power is restored soon. I know what it's like. It usually happens to us in the winter with snows, breaking trees, etc. Last winter our power was out for a week and our fiber (internet/tv/phones) was out for a month. Luckily, we have a gas generator for those emergencies. Did you have a wind storm that knocked the power out?

I read On the Island by Tracey Garvis-Graves last week and really liked it so I was looking at getting that novella Kay mentioned. Shoot, it's only "okay"? :(

I can start Wednesday. Go ahead and start today and I can catch up to you and maybe discuss later this week?

message 1645: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella6) | 436 comments I can start Wednesday Kay, no problem at all. I am actually in the middle of a book so it will give me the chance to wrap it up.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Lori, Wendy, when are you going to read Hunted (The Iron Druid Chronicles, #6) by Kevin Hearne ? I about had a freak-out moment at around the 20% mark and I am not sure what's coming next. I need someone to discuss with! Is this the final book?

message 1647: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Kay, Wendy and I are going to read Come Alive Thursday or Friday if you want to join us?

message 1648: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Stacia - I read it already. I LOVED the book! But I bet I know what you're freaking out about. Is there an Iron Druid Chronicles thread? We could chat there with spoiler tags OR you can Inbox me here.

Leea, Wendy, and others reading Come Alive... I CAN'T WAIT, SO I CAN DISCUSS IT!!!

message 1649: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments @ Lori - you've been in this boat before, haven't you? I'm at the 70% mark. Not saying anything more. I'm bookmarking like crazy!

This was just a fun companion novel. You get to revisit TJ & Anna and find out who Bones was and what happened to him. It's short so I didn't find it earth shattering but I guess it's better than ok. Fans will find it as a nice compliment to the first book.
