OES is one prequel that might work better if you read it after book 1. I don't know if I would have continued with the series if I'd read OES before S&N, but after reading S&N, I was curious enough to want to see why Javier was the way that he was.

Wow, they're advertising the heck out of it on Facebook. Wonder if the authors know that it's sold out? Both Karina Halle and Gail McH are pushing it on FB.

We can just chat about it in the Cut & Run Thread if that's okay with everyone.

How weird.
I wanted to go with a couple friends, but we arranged it just a tad too late. If there's still a way to go, I'd like to know about it...
Thanks for the info, Lori. I'll have to look into it.

message 1156: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Hi everybody! I'm back after a couple of really EXHAUSTING days at the BEA. The Bloggers Conference was OK but going to the Exhibit Hall was great! I got to talk to people in the industry and get tons of free books. If only I didn't have a couple of work meetings (I went there with the CEO at my company), I would have been able to roam around more.

I think next year I'll just skip the conference and spend a day at the Exhibition.

message 1157: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 383 comments Cut & Run and As the World Dies series both look really good. I have Rhiannon Frater's vampire books on my kindle waiting to be read. Has anybody read them - are they good? I'm nearly caught up with the Sarah Booth Delaney series, reading Bone Appetit (Sarah Booth Delaney, #10) by Carolyn Haines and really liking this series still. Kinda like a Southern Stephanie Plum, which I believe others had made that comparison. Fun, fast reads. Slowly, nearing the end of American Gods by Neil Gaiman which is weird, but good. Glad I'm listening to it because I probably would've given up if reading it.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Lisa, I read Frater's vamp books and her zombie books several years ago (I think) and they are amazing. The good thing about Rhiannon's writings are the characters she creates. They are so unique and unlike characters in other books.

Yes!! Move As the World Dies series up - it's one of my favorites. I have Stacia and Regina to thank for that fabulous recommendation.

I'm about 22% (Chap 4) into Cut & Run. It's just starting to pick up and I already have a HUGE crush on Ty :)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I'm going old school and I'm going to read a Nora Roberts series I read and loved years ago:

Jewels of the Sun (Gallaghers of Ardmore / Irish Trilogy, #1) by Nora Roberts Tears of the Moon (Gallaghers of Ardmore / Irish Trilogy, #2) by Nora Roberts Heart of the Sea (Gallaghers of Ardmore / Irish Trilogy, #3) by Nora Roberts

I think you and Kay are the Frater experts around here. I keep meaning to try something else of hers. She even has another zombie series that I'm interested in.

Not necessarily, but I'm not sure that I learned anything ground breaking. Given that I have limited time, I think that it would have been more useful to meet authors and chat with Publishers. I didn't have time to do that as much on the day I went my boss because we had a few meetings.

Angie, I read those last year before my trip to Ireland and really liked them. I'm slowly building a Nora Roberts shelf in my bookcase.

message 1169: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) OOOkay... I might be the wimp here... not loving the Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy, #1) by Karina Halle books. When books or movies are harsh, tough, gritty, and "real", I have a tough time with them. I admit, I'm often into escape.

And yes, I know that my reading preferences seem contradictory. Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon could certainly be termed as all of those things. And to be honest, I almost couldn't get through the end of that book the 1st time. It took 3 reads or so before I could deal with it and move on without flinching and putting it down every few minutes.

I think Regina was disappointed in me over After Hours by Cara McKenna , because I felt the same way about it. I only gave it a 3.5 star rating, because it's tough for me to recommend books to others that are so darned tough for me to read. With "After Hours", the recommendations would be sparse for me because of the high-steam content... that, and the ambiguous ending that's not exactly a HEA. Again - it's "real".

This is how I feel about On Every Street (The Artists Trilogy, #0.5) by Karina Halle and Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy, #1) by Karina Halle . I love Karina Halle, and I recognize that these are well-crafted and this world is very consistent. It's just that I don't really want to be in that world. Hey, I had a tough time getting through The Hunger Games trilogy, OK! I thought series like Fever toughened me up a bit, but maybe because that's still enough "fantasy", I can get through it? I don't know.

And yes, I had a tough time with Touch & Geaux (Cut & Run #7) by Abigail Roux - the last currently published Ty & Zane book for the "reality" factor. That's not a spoiler, is it?

message 1170: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments LOL, you just convinced me to push onin On Every Street. ;)

And honey I was NOT disappointed in you about After Hours! I completely get where you are coming from. Everything I loved about After Hours is why I have trouble with many romance novels.

Same. I use 3 stars and 3.5 more than anything because a book really has to sell me to make me give out a solid 4 these days. I don't consider 3.5 to be bad, if 3 is my average/standard rating. 3.5 is my "slightly above average" rating, and it depends if I was closer to really liking or just liking a little which determines if I'm rounding up or down.

The more I think about it, the more I really think that people should skip On Every Street and read Sins & Needles first, then decide if they want to go back to OES. I really don't think OES is strong enough to sell the books.

message 1176: by Regina (last edited Jun 02, 2013 01:33PM) (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I think a lot of prequels are like that. They are almost written for fans as a gift sort of. I will put aside On Every Street and read Sins & Needles first.

3.5 isn't bad for me either I just thought After hours was a 4.5 to 5 star type of book. :)

message 1177: by D.G. (last edited Jun 02, 2013 05:00PM) (new)

D.G. I recently read a book that I found randomly at the library and really enjoyed! Turn It Up by Inez Kelley is a friends to lovers story and it's really focused on the relationship. It's actually not that steamy but there are tons of frank conversations about sex, including serious discussions about birth control in a non-hookup environment, possible dangers of the pill, what makes a man a man, and society's attitude about women and sex. Plus lots of sexy banter. It was great! I'll definitely write a review soon.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Wendy are you struggling with Cut & Run too? Leea, why are you not liking it? I am only 3% in and haven't had time to read at all since Thursday.

message 1182: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I finished Cut & Run, but I only gave it 2 stars. I didn't like it very much, lol. My review was pretty much a rant. (there are two very small spoilers in it that I bitch about, so maybe don't go read it quite yet, lol). But because so many of my friends love it I'm gonna give it another chance and see if the next one is a little better.

message 1183: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments You know the writing is really choppy and the chatacters Ty and & Zane, it feels like each author wrote for each one so the conversations are almost hard for me to follow. I'm 75% into it and man there has been a lot of WTF moments and the plot is changing and jumping around. The suspense aspect is seriously ridiculous, at 64% they finally start dealing with the serial killer. Oh man, i'm just rolling my eyes.

Basically read Wendy's review and I feel the same way.

I do see some potential in Ty & Zane but it's hard getting to know them under all this crazy writing.

message 1184: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Huh, I don't know if I want to push in then since I have so much I need to read.

I'm still planning on reading Under the Dome tomorrow too, just have to finish Cut & Run!

We have some packing to do so I may be slower than you and Stacia.

message 1188: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments Well I'll still be about 3-5% in. It's definitely slow going. It's over 1000 pages, lol.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I'll probably start tomorrow afternoon. I have to hurry up and finish Gameboard of the Gods (Age of X, #1) by Richelle Mead .

I finished After Hours by Cara McKenna and liked it, although I found some similarities between the characters in this and her book Skin Game, which threw me a little.

message 1190: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) I had to put Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy, #1) by Karina Halle down... I'll pick it up again when I'm not so stressed.

BTW, Karina Halle replied to my inquiry about Dex & Perry go to Target. She directed me to Maryse's site. Isn't that where we found it?

Through FB and her blog, I realized she's been on tour. So I thanked her for responding & told her we did find the story.

message 1191: by Courtney (new)

Courtney | 159 comments Finally trudged slowly through to the end of Heart of a Lion by Hillary Fields . What a battle. The idea was very interesting and definitely intriguing, but the constant repetition of their feelings for each other was annoying. Glad I'm done with it.

Moving on to Almost Perfect (Perfect Trilogy, #1) by Julie Ortolon !

Those were EXACTLY my feelings about C&R. I read it a couple of years ago and although I said I was going to read the second book, I haven't been able to. I'll only try because I know so many friends love it but I didn't see anything special about it.

message 1193: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments DG, Michelle felt the same way -- she listened to the audio.

I am enjoying Sins & Needles (The Artists Trilogy, #1) by Karina Halle , I love Camden. I am about 20% in.

I am listening to Blood Cross (Jane Yellowrock, #2) by Faith Hunter and so far it is a 2 star book for me. I can't figure out what the storyline is.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Regina, I am a big Camden fan. You probably haven't met Javier yet but meh.

Finished Property The True Story of a Polygamous Church Wife by Carol Christie and Gameboard of the Gods (Age of X, #1) by Richelle Mead , both of which were underwhelming. I think Gameboard set up the end of the book for an interesting book 2, so I'll be reading it, but there was too much of the boring politics and military stuff going on before we got to the mythology portion of the story, which I was more interested in. I was saddened to have to rate anything by Mead so low, but I have faith that she'll bring it with the story arc and it will progress on to something better because that's where she excels.
Started Under the Dome by Stephen King with Wendy and Leea in prep for the t.v. show that comes out this month.
