Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I just wanna say...everyone is scared of the Vikings...but they don't look so tough!

Do you think the guy second from right is into Pokemon? And second from the left is totally over-compensating with shield size...come to think of it do you think shield sizes start at Extra Large and go up from there?

D.G. I'm going to have to check out Dream of Me/Believe in Me.

message 703: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Tee hee, Ian! Most of my schooling years (from 3rd grade up) were in Minnesota, so I learned a lot about Vikings and settling the "new world". They had to be fierce to endure the journey across the ocean, and then manage to go overland far enough to settle in Minnesota. I always wondered who would choose such a cold place to settle in? But I guess it reminded them of their home or something...

Grew up with lots of Swedes and Norwegians... saying "Ooh Duh" and going to potlucks with "hot dishes" and even the occasional lutefisk!

ANYWAY... just barely started into the "Believe in Me" part of the Viking story in Dream of Me/Believe in Me (Viking & Saxon, #1 & #2) by Josie Litton .

RUN! LOL

Marsha Canham writes the best pirate books. I've had the sequel for ages and have been meaning to read it.

ETA: MC is an established author so this is not your run of the mill freebie. :) When it was free, I recommended it to everybody!

Latoya | 31 comments I started Duke and I by Julia Quinn. I have had the book for a while on my tablet, but only recently decided to read it. The story gripped me within the first few pages. I think I will be reading for the rest of the day.

Lori (lorimcd) Love that Across a Moonlit Sea (Dante Pirates, #1) by Marsha Canham is making you laugh! I need some of that right now... work is tense. BTW, the book is still free for Kindle - I checked and downloaded it.

Dee - I guess today *is* the 15th, huh? Time to start Dirty by Megan Hart . I'm woefully behind on my reading right now, so I'm not going to be able to start until later this week or this weekend. But I'm sure I'll catch up.

Latoya - The Bridgerton series is one of my ALL TIME FAVS! So good... they make me laugh and cry. I just love Violet, their mother.

Leea | 1437 comments So I cannot get away from Vikings it seems... I finshed Dream of Me last night and I started Game (Jasper Dent, #2) by Barry Lyga but my mind is with Hawk... So I'm going to pick up Believe in Me too.

Happy Wednesday... Woke up to ants invading the from entry. Ugh!

message 714: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Yucko, Leea! I love homeopathic remedies, but the one time I used cayenne and cinnamon across the ant trail, it left behind a red stain that was tougher to clean up than dealing with the ants - LOL! But it was near my cat's food dish (they invaded that and her water), so I didn't want to use harsh chemicals. I'm sure there are easier alternatives to chemicals. But if all else fails, you can try sprinkling cayenne pepper and/or cinnamon over the trail.

I have heard that you can mix up pepper sauce (like Tabasco) with water and spray it on the trail, too.

Latoya | 31 comments Ok so I have a confession, I hate when I am in the middle of a good book and I have to stop for something (work, chores, etc.) On Mother's Day, I was having some quality time with my husband (which is very good), but after a couple of hours, I was looking forward to reading my book. Shame on me.

LMAO. I think I'm one of the only people on the planet who hates most epilogues.

So far I'm loving Believe in Me and I also started Dead of Eve (Trilogy of Eve, #1) by Pam Godwin for a buddy read which is sort of reminding me of The First Days (As the World Dies, #1) by Rhiannon Frater , except for the fact that the people are turning into mutant bugs (aphids) instead of zombies.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments We'll see how it goes. I think it's supposed to get really gory near the end, and it might have weird sex, but I'm not far in yet to know. The chick is the last chick on earth and more than one man is interested in her...

Well, there are technically women, but they're all aphid bugs now.

message 735: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I agree about the sex not equalling marriage (at least for me), so I find it really really refreshing when characters dont' go there automatically in their mind. Thinking about controversial topics, I am not sure I have seen an author cover that topic. There was the Megan Hart story where the wife lied about being on contraceptives.

Ewwww Stacia, I am not sure I could handle characters that turn in to bugs!!

I'm so there with you, Regina. I know everybody is wired differently but it seems like in a lot of books, the woman starts picking china right after they have sex and sometimes she doesn't even know if the guy has a job or is nice to his mother.

message 738: by Ian (last edited May 16, 2013 04:50AM) (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Dee wrote: "someone else to tackle abortion and how its ok to not want kids "

In Summer in Sonoma one of the women got pregnant (IUD failure) and because of severe financial hardship didn't think she could afford another child. She had the IUD removed which effectively ended the pregnancy.
Come to think of it, Robyn Carr has dealt with an unwanted pregnancy a few times. May have been Moonlight Road that a young couple felt they weren't ready for children and decided to put the child up for adoption.
But I can't remember the A word ever being used in a CR where the mother's life wasn't in danger.

message 739: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments But why shouldn't abortion be mentioned/used - it exists, women every day opt for them - why not...

I've only read a couple Robyn Carr - she is too natural birth preachy for me (virgin river)

message 740: by Ian (last edited May 16, 2013 05:46AM) (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I'm not saying it's right but it's a topic that will polarise. An author might write the best book ever written but if she goes there people will hate it for no other reason than she went there. Imagine the furore if a male author wrote about it.

(hesitates)

I can predict how the attacks will go when an author does broach the subject. People opposed to abortion will suggest she isn't qualified to discuss the topic. They will suggest she is a feminist (like that's a bad thing). They will suggest she's ignorant of the real situation. They might even use the other A word (atheist).

message 741: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments It is def a book that will polarize but someone has to be the first - just like the first to write an IR romance or first to get M/M or f/f closer to the mainstream - but once that risk is taken its like others feel like they can as well

message 742: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments What about a male writing under a pseudonym - I mean the first female to write m/m had to deal with likely being told not qualified since she doesn't have a penis or the first guy to write a traditional romance

message 743: by Ian (new)

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments I agree. I can pretty much guarantee that person won't be Jill Shalvis.

message 744: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Of course not - I think MH would be great because she already writes stuff that could be seen as controversial

Just my opinion but there are people out there who won't let the truth stand in the way of their outrage. Doesn't matter what you do or say, they will give it the meaning they want to give it.

When I was young I was walking through a mall and a bible thumping preacher was talking about that band Kiss. He said and I quote "Kiss stands for Kids in Satan's Service". And here was I thinking it was just a cool name for a band.

message 746: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Doesn't that happen all the time though - not like fiction is the only thing that happens in

message 747: by Regina (last edited May 16, 2013 06:33AM) (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I don't think Robyn Carr is not the person to write it. I also don't think she is preachy at all. She had a book that provided abortion as a legitimate option for a woman. What Robyn Car does do is present natural birth as natural and not as hokey or biazarre or simply for hippies (not to bash hippies, but you know what I mean I hope). I was so excited to read how she writes about it because it is not normal to see natural birth or home birth presented in mainstream books in a matter of fact and realistic factual way -- in fact outside of Outlander I can't think of another book that presents natural birth as not scary or not bizarre. She isn't preachy -- she has c-sections, she has women who choose otherwise, she doesn't lecture about natural birth it is just somethin that comes up in the context of her books and she writes about it in a matter of fact way. That isn't preachy. Preachy would be to say this is the only way and she isn't doing that. I wish I could remember the book that had abortion in it, but like her other books -- she presented it as a health choice. I'll have to think about it.

Megan Hart -- I referenced above -- has dealt with a woman who didn't want kids and went to the extreme of lying to her husband about it in Tempted. There are many literary fiction books, not romance that deal with this topic. I want to say Suzanne Brockmann has touched on this, not sure why but I can't remember the book now so I could be wrong.

I am just thrilled when I find a romance book that has a woman who likes sex, has had sex before and her appearance isn't the focus of the book but instead her character and personality are. On that note I am really liking Dirty. I like how the main character likes to drink too. I guess I am just full of my vices.

message 748: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments I guess my RC issue is that all her women seem to be into home birth which IMHO doesn't seem like an accurate representation of how things stand now - but then I've only had limited experience

Re: abortion as a health choice - why does that have to be the only way that it is portrayed - why not someone who cannot take care of a child at that time in their life and opt for one...

I don't remember a SB that dealt with it - unless it was one of her earlier books (pre-SEALs)

message 749: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments That is what I loved about it though. :) For me who home birthed her last baby and have many friends who did, I loved that the women around her accepted it. But all the women are not necessarily into natural birth or home birth at all, but they do come to like it. There are hospital births with epis in the book and c-sections due to emergency.

Dee I don't think it should only be presented as a health choice at all. What I meant was, this was a situation in where a woman had limited options and what I meant was that the main character (Mel) presented it in a matter of fact way as a health a choice not as something that was really out there.

message 750: by D.G. (new)

D.G. Regina wrote: "her appearance isn't the focus of the book but instead her character and personality are."

Also something I prefer. I mean, I understand that looks are the first thing you see about a person and if they are attractive, of course that will stand out first. But after that first impression, I want couples to focus on personality and character. I know that after a while, looks banish for me and I just see the person.
