Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I picked up In Bed With A Stranger (McJames, #1) by Mary Wine last night and a Highlander romance is just what I need. I am enjoying it more than I thought I would.

It is rainy in Northern California today. I hope those on the East Coast are staying warm.

We're trying, Kay. The frost on my car wasn't even gone when I left for work this morning, and I'd heated it up. LOL

Stay dry! :)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Yesterday, the temps weren't all that bad, but the windchill made for a miserable time. I went to pick up Silas at school and my lips felt like they were going to fall off!

We were standing around outside his classroom, and it was the one day the kids came out late. All of the adults were grumbling. One lady walked out of the classroom by herself and a mom screamed, "NO!!! Go back in there and come out with kids!!!"

We were all laughing. One dad said, "I don't even care at this point. I'm taking the first kid who comes out." I answered, "we can switch them back tomorrow."

It was miserable, but funny.

Leea | 1437 comments Finally finished Queen of Camelot by Nancy McKenzie and like Stacia it was a love/hate relationship. I loved so much about this book and then at times parts drove me flippin' nuts. The end was just too much for me and this book was just so dang long. I mean it took me 10 days of solid reading to finish it. Having finished it, I do feel like a weight is off my back. ha!

I'm also reading Dark Places by Gillian Flynn and this book is well, dark. I hope to read more today.

I'm also going to start Written in Red (The Others, #1) by Anne Bishop and i'm so excited. So many of you have really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to see why.

Like Kay, I too am enjoying the rain in N. California. Perfect coffee and reading weather, my favorite!

message 5610: by Chris (new)

Chris Huntley (iamwrll) | 5 comments I live in Washington where the weather is always perfect. Finished River Road by Jayne Ann Krentz. It is an really great read. A very well written romantic suspense novel. 5 out of 5.

Leea | 1437 comments Chris, Washington state? My father in law lives there, Port Orchard and for me there is just not enough sun. haha!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I changed my mind and switched to Sheikh's Scandal by Lucy Monroe . I've been wanting to try a book with a sheikh male lead for a while.

Amazing idea...amazing beginning...amazing ending. But IMO just a little too long. I kind of wish she went at it with a spoon and took some of the middle out.

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Can I just say that Amazon is so nice. I bought my Kindle paperwhite last November. A few weeks ago, my 2 year old cracked the screen. It was a little knick but the crack was growing bigger & bigger as time passed. I called Amazon to find out how much it would cost to fix it and they said they will send a replacement for free bc of the 1 yr warranty. I didn't realize this warranty covers user damage too. I should get it on Friday. I'm so happy bc I was so heartbroken that it got damaged so soon.

message 5621: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments What a relief Kay! Yes amazon has covered my damage too (stepping on my kindle at the gym and then dropping of from the bleachers). They have a great model of customer service. And I bet you get the new one by this week!

message 5622: by Tellulah (new)

Tellulah Darling (tellulahdarling) Barely finished Sunset (Pact Arcanum, #1) by Arshad Ahsanuddin and The Infernals (Samuel Johnson, #2) by John Connolly Ugh. The first one started off well and was well-written except it got mired in flashbacks and tons of characters and massively soapy relationships. However, I was glad the "magic vagina" affect can be turned into "magic penis". Everyone loved the main character.

The Infernals just drove me nuts because of it's wry British humorous tone. Which I love in books like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and Good Omens but they have things like character development and plot. I'm picky like that.

message 5623: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Amazon really does have good customer service.

So, I'm working my way through In Bed With A Stranger (McJames, #1) by Mary Wine . I got to the part where they finally sleep together...it was hot. But what happened afterwards is what intrigued me. The laird has several maids inspect the bloodied sheet as well as some of his men. Afterwards, they fly the bloodied sheet outside with ringing bells to show that the deed was done and that she was in fact an innocent.

I've read several highland romances in the past but not enough to be an expert. Does the flying of the sheet happen often? I read a book where the laird flies it while riding towards the enemy (due to some conflict) to show that she is his, but not where they show the whole village. I don't find this barbaric but just very fascinating. LOL

Chris Huntley (iamwrll) | 5 comments Leea wrote: "Chris, Washington state? My father in law lives there, Port Orchard and for me there is just not enough sun. haha!"

Maybe we should trade a little rain for more sun though it is sunny now.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I don't know, Kay, but I know that in some cultures, searching of the sheet was required as proof of virginity.

I just found a western book that looks interesting and I might order a used copy online because I can't find it in ebook form.
Outlaw Hearts by Rosanne Bittner

I loved this : She was a woman alone in a harsh, unyielding frontier. Then she clashed with the notorious gunslinger Jake Harkner, a hard-hearted loner with a price on his head.

and : who loved him enough to risk her life to be his woman...an outlaw's woman

and : From the vast plains of the Midwest across the Oregon Trail to the sun-drenched valleys of southern California, from the blazing Nevada desert to the boomtowns of Colorado.

This looks like a Kay and Leea type of book.

I remember the book you're talking about the bed sheet when he's going off to fight, we must have read that together. ha! Other than that book, I haven't read that before. That is interesting and odd all at the same time.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments From what I can see, the book was never released as an ebook. I'm going to spend the 4 bucks and order it used from Amazon. If it's any good, I can pass it along in the mail after I'm done if you'd like.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Sure thing. The book should get to me sometime next week, so I'll start it then.

Finished Sheikh's Scandal by Lucy Monroe and it was cheesy, but still sweet and fun. I wanted to see him working the harem though! No dice.

Does Harlequin have harem's in their books very often?

message 5633: by Kay (last edited Feb 28, 2014 12:21PM) (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments Stacia, I find that Harlequin does have some cheesiness but that is the reason why I read them sometimes...especially when I just need a simple escape.

I finished In Bed With A Stranger (McJames, #1) by Mary Wine and I really enjoyed it. I also appreciated that the sex was hot and tasteful...just the right amount that I love in my romance novels.

The older Harlequin presents book series had quite a few books with Sheikh main characters. I'm assuming that someone had a harem in there somewhere, but I'd never read any of those books. I'm sure that the harem thing was just a mention and not any sort of huge detail. It would be fun to read a book where it was actually a part of the story though.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Announcement about a change to our group read format :

We're trying out something different for the next group read. This is only an experiment, and is not necessarily how we will do all of our group reads, unless we find as a group that we like the format.

Starting mid-March, we will be reading a few chapters of Winter's Tale daily from Monday through Friday, over the period of a couple of weeks.

We'll come together to discuss the chapters we've read before we move on to the next set of chapters.

If someone is wanting to participate and is worried that they might have to skip some days, it's no worry. If you have to catch up by reading a few days at once, you're welcome to join us when you get caught up.

Start date will be announced shortly.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Started Wardrobe Girl. The setting is a low budget beach side soap opera. Very Australian, a lot of name dropping....suburb mentioning...nods to brand names. It was driving me insane for the first 15% and I thought I was really going to hate the book but it's come good and I'm enjoying it at the moment.

Ian (setaian) | 640 comments Just finished Wardrobe Girl which I struggled with...but in a good way. It's one of those books that are too real to be comfortable. Not really romance even though I think it was in the romance section at Netgalley. I'd say it's more chick lit...although it's not quite chick lit either.

Anyway, despite there being things in there which really bugged me...and feeling a bit uncomfortable for a lot of the book, I still gave it 5 Stars.

I'm curious to read your review of it Ian, given there were aspects you were uncomfortable with, yet still was a 5 star read for you.

First of all, I love a good Cuban cigar. If they didn't cost $35 each I'd smoke them much more than I do. So the thing that bothered me is the main character was a smoker but the author didn't just say she had a cigarette, she said she had a Marlboro Light. Happened 6 or 7 times during the book and it started to feel like an ad for Marlboros. lol...I actually even felt like a cigarette...even though I haven't smoked cigarettes in 15 years.

I didn't mention this in the review...I might have said something in an update, not sure.
