Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Thank you. :)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments Congrats on finding the kindle. That's great news!

Ian. I'm not even surprised.

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments And I had a good weekend off of reading, just watching movies with the family and listening to books when I was doing other stuff. So maybe it was good to leave the kindle at work. :)

I'm excited to hear what you think of both of these books. Both on the huge TBR list!!

Leea | 1437 comments Ian - please NOOO!! Ha!

Regina - So glad you found your kindle :)

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I'm so glad you found your Kindle, Regina!

As for Outlander, I have read the first one, and it was just OK for me. I actually didn't mind the detail. It wasn't enough for me to want to read more, but I do want to know what happens. Specifically with (view spoiler) I wish there was a Cliff's notes version of the series available. Maybe I should just check it out on Wikipedia.

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I'll happily spoil you! Hahaha, so click here if you mean it! (view spoiler). If there's other things you want to know, but don't want to read, go ahead and ask me, lmao.

Dark Places is going to be a fantastic movie. Like the other books by Gillian Flynn, Dark Places is really disturbing and deals with super painful stuff -- the unimaginable -- and her characters try to figure out how to go on while solving a weird mystery. But it isn't a mystery, it is a story about the characters.

Thank you, Wendy. I did mean it! LOL

Chris Huntley (iamwrll) | 5 comments I am also reading romance wise in book form River Road by Jayne Ann Krentz. Really great read so far.

message 5562: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments That's great Chris, i'll have to look into that book.

I read Donners of the Dead by Karina Halle today and it was just okay. Super quick read after reading Queen of Camelot which is so history laden. Ha! Clearly I needed a genre chance. Still going to finish Queen of Camelot but I also want to read something else. I do have a ton of ARC's to finish too...

message 5563: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Quick thing about Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn , not sure who's read this book but a month ago my husband and I were trying this thing where he reads to me in bed while we fall asleep. He started reading Gone girl because it was a book we both wanted to read and then see the movie. The first chapter was good and then the second chapter was just terrible. I mean, we ended up laughing and not finishing it. Thus was the end of Gone girl for us.

So, should we keep going or should I pick up Dark Places? or another of Flynns books?

message 5564: by Dee (last edited Feb 24, 2014 04:59PM) (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments honestly I loved gone girl, but you need to get about 1/3 of the way through to see the really twisted stuff

if you do audiobooks I highly recommend - its a duo narration - Kirby Heyborne and Julia Wheldon

message 5565: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Check out my review or gone girl. :) it took me 3x to read it. Same with a with a woman I blog work and we both love Gillian Flynn. I loved Sharp Objects and I am loving Dark Places. They both deal with disturbing stuff but they are good stories with fascinating characters. Gone Girl didn't have either. In my opinion the author tried too hard to be shocking and also - tbere was an excellent marketing campaign.

message 5566: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Oh good at least i'm not the only one. Maybe i'll try one of her other books. I think I have Sharp Objects.

Dee, I have never done an Audio book, I really should get on that. ha! Thanks for the tip.

message 5567: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Dee you are right. It took me until 1/3 or 1/2 to be interested.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I'm going to be reading something by Flynn next week. Probably Gone Girl, but I'm waiting on my buddy read partner to decide because I just asked if she wanted Dark Places instead. Doesn't that movie come out before GG? Or am I wrong?

message 5569: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments whereas Gone Girl was the first book by GF that I listened to, I just haven't tried any of her other stuff yet

message 5570: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 419 comments Dee wrote: "whereas Gone Girl was the first book by GF that I listened to, I just haven't tried any of her other stuff yet"

I tried the audio of that and I couldn't get into it. However, I was very distracted at that point. I plan to try again.

message 5571: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I read Sharp Objects -- and was just so blown away. Most people say that was their favorite of hers. It has been 3 years for me since I read that, so Dark Places is having a really strong impact on me. Most readers of her books say they prefer these two over Gone Girl, although I have seen quite a few readers who liked Gone Girl too.

If you are reading a book by her just to try her, then I say read Sharb Objects or Dark Places. If it is for the movie, then like Dee said - just push through and just please remember that her other two books are worlds better.

Stacia, I don't remember when each movie is being released.

Samantha -- I think it may have just been the beginning of the book.

message 5572: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Stacia -- I just checked, Dark Places is early September and Gone Girl is early October.

I'm going to try again. I definitely thought it was me at that point.

I saw the movie trailer for Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth and now I really want to read the books. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sutgWj...

message 5575: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Dee I would love your thoughts on it! Charlize Theron is starring in it and producing it.

I need to read Divergent. I want to see the movie, so I she read it. Holding me back is how people don't seem to like the sequels?

Funny, both authors of Dark Places/Gone Girl and Divergent live in Chicago. :)

message 5576: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1437 comments Maybe I should read Dark Places instead of Sharp Objects... Ohh man, what to do? ha!

message 5577: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Off to make dinner and run, nice chatting. :)

I've seen the mix reviews on the sequel to it but it won't hurt for me to read the first book.

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments i just reserved both Sharp Objects and Dark Places in audiobook - they both have a significant number of holds on them at the libary...

I need to read Divergent too before the movie comes out. Anyone up for a buddy read? Not now but we could set a date.

message 5583: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 419 comments I'm up for it, Leea. Let me know when you want to do it :)

message 5584: by Kay (new)

Kay (calikay) | 667 comments I finished Megan Hart's serial Tempts Me (Every Part of You, #1) by Megan Hart and it really does read better as one book as Regina said. I wouldn't suggest people read this until all the serials are published unless you like the feeling of the build up with anticipation and waiting.

message 5585: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments Also, it is $1.99 per installment! So ultimately it would be $10. Which is too bad, b/c I think this will dissuade purchasers.

message 5586: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I just finished Dark Places by Gillian Flynn -- so disturbing but so well done!

I just started the audio of The Flamethrowers by Rachel Kushner

message 5587: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments Is it going to be published as a single book?

message 5588: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments I don't think so. I asked Megan Hart about it -- and I love her by the way, love her writing but the answer wasn't something I was thrilled with. I am guessing (completely made up here) that it is publisher driven, but in the end it is $10 for the entire story. I really enjoyed this story, I loved that it was a new take on a sexual relationship between a man and a woman but I wouldn't pay $10 for it.

message 5589: by Domino (aka Meme) (new)

Domino (aka Meme) (bryghtstarr) | 173 comments change of plans. Affliction (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #22) by Laurell K. Hamilton came in from the library so i'll be listening to it then continue with The Courage to Love

message 5590: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments i'm interesting, but since she tends to be more miss than hit with me, i'd probably go the library route - but they won't get it if it doesn't come out in print - KWIM>

message 5591: by Samantha (new)

Samantha | 419 comments Started audio for Beyond the Highland Mist (Highlander, #1) by Karen Marie Moning

message 5592: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments The audio for all of KMM's books are fantastic. I loved some of her highlander books: The Dark Highlander (Highlander, #5) by Karen Marie Moning The Immortal Highlander (Highlander, #6) by Karen Marie Moning Spell of the Highlander (Highlander, #7) by Karen Marie Moning

I was less of a fan of Beyond the Highland Mist and the other few at the beginning of the so called "series". I will be interested to see what you think!

message 5593: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 1447 comments So The Flamethrowers by Rachel Kushner wasn't on my phone, so I started the audio of The Dinner by Herman Koch

I finished Donners of the Dead by Karina Halle -- I feel so bad but I did not enjoy this book! I skimmed so much of it. I thought the romance didn't make sense and there was no chemistry. What I liked about it was the setting. I am thinking 2 stars.

message 5594: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) | 1116 comments I was really disappointed in it too, but for different reasons. I liked the relationship between the two characters. I just felt a lot like I did with the last Sins & Needles book, like she went "Okay, were at the end so I gotta wrap this up" then she just wrote a 'completion' chapter and that was that. It was so rushed. And the epilogue... did not like that. Again, a lot like I felt about Sins and Needles.

Angie Elle (angieelle) | 696 comments I'm reading Golden Trail (The 'Burg, #3) by Kristen Ashley . I am a huge KA fan, but this book is just not doing it for me. I don't like the heroine at all.

message 5596: by Gwennie, Mrs. Bookworm (new)

Everyone seems skeptical about the first two books. If the audio is fantastic, then I plan to do them all in audio.

Should we try to rename the site 'Grrrrrrrr! reads.' LOL

Dee (austhokie) | 817 comments yeah, I'm in the first two books were ehhh camp, and the narrator is ok...his female voices SUCK!!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) | 862 comments I was ehh on the first three.

Finished Queen of Camelot by Nancy McKenzie and had a love/hate with the book, but loved much more than I hated, so I still consider it a success. I got a few good recs for other Arthurian fiction, so I hope to read more in the near future.

Still working on Killer Frost (Mythos Academy, #6) by Jennifer Estep but I'm getting warmed up to now. It took a little while.

Started Bone Crossed (Mercy Thompson, #4) by Patricia Briggs and Reality Boy by A.S. King but I seem to be in the mood to want to jump around between books. I really wanted to pick up a Lisa Kleypas, but realized that I had book 3 of the trilogy I was working on when I needed book 2.
