Caroline (carolinedavies) | 568 comments It's lovely to see the travelling notebook is still making its way around the world. That book has so many stories.

Do we have The Charioteer as one of our travelling books? Is there anyone who hasn't yet read it? I'd be happy to send out a copy if anyone would like to read it.

Matthias Williamson (matthiasw) | 340 comments The book has arrived in California. I will pass on to the next person when I'm finished doing something in the book. OMG! this is so cool.

There are so many cool things between our Traveling Notebook's covers already (including a surprise from Josh), so you definitely want to see that. :-)

Sounds great, Idamus! Thank you. Yes, it's the getting there that's difficult. I am really about as far away from Europe as a person can get, and those really long flights are not cheap. I'm in the exact opposite time zone from GMT, actually. When I have many thousands of dollars saved up, I will come! :)

News about our Traveling Notebook — it's now on its way to Carlita. Here is list of group members who wish to have it visiting them:

Matthias (US) --> Matthias has now sent it to Carlita.
Carlita (US)
Karen (US)
Felice (US)
Jordan (US)
Alison (New Zealand)
Sabine (Germany)
Varecia (Germany)
Calathea (Germany)
Hambel (UK)
Idamus (Denmark)

I have a suggestion and I want to hear what you guys think of it. What if Carlita would send this notebook to Josh after she has written on its pages and we'd send a brand new one (or two!) traveling? Or... would it be more practical if Carlita would send the notebook to Karen, and Karen to Felice, and Felice to Josh?

Anyway, the current Notebook started traveling in April 2013, so it's been on road for two years now — I think it would enjoy its retirement days by Josh's pool in the near future. :-)

Thoughts?

I will say what the others have also said--a new one is good idea, but I would love to see the original. But yeah, at some point, the notebook has to retire to the poolside with a fruity drink.

Two thoughts:

1) I wanna see it too!

2) how full is it? If it's close to full, great, but if not, I feel like we should have it more than halfway before retirement, yes? Lol, that awesome notebook has to work hard to earn it's retirement! :-)

Scanning is a good idea — at least to preserve it. The fuller it gets the more scared I get that we'll lose it at some point along the road before it gets back to Josh. That's why I started this discussion.

Anyways, I don't feel comfortable with the idea that we'd post the pages of the notebook on social media without asking from the person who wrote them first. I've partly posted my pages already, but I assume all the people who've written on its pages don't want their pages to be shared on internet.

It's hard to explain what I'm trying to say — and you guys probably don't see it the same way — but the traveling notebook has an old-fashioned diary-like feel too it. This might sound a bit extreme, but it's almost like a love letter to Josh and to this group. :-) You write very different things in it if you know it will be shared on internet rather than be read by some of your friends, right? Or maybe I'm totally wrong about this.

On the other hand I feel exactly like you guys — I'm eager to see those pages myself! I'd love to read everything you guys have written in it. I'd love to see all the pictures and doodles. :-)

So I'm sure we'll find a satisfying solution to this, right? Would it be practical if we'd have a Traveling Notebook topic here where we could post all the pages we want to share? All the pages we have permission to scan? (I have photos of few of the pages — mine, Josh's and some of the pages with delicious recipes. LOL.)

And to answer Jordan's question — if I remember correctly the notebook is about half full.

And thank you, Karen, for offering to do the scanning!

What do you guys think? I know I must sound like a sentimental fool, but I'm pretty sentimental about things like this. And this notebook has proven to be quite a treasure. A treasure I wouldn't want to get lost before it finds its way back home. :-)

And to still add one more thought — After reading your comments I think we should let this notebook to travel for a while still. But maybe try to take care that it won't stay too long in one place? And... we could still send another notebook on its way. What do you say?

(Sorry about this looooong post.)

This was always my worry. That's why I was happy to hear about the idea of starting a new one. On the other side I do understand that people would like to see it.

The scanning option is a good idea, but I definitely wouldn't like to see my personal messages to Josh published on open social media.

What about sending the scanned notebook per mail to the people interested?

Antonella wrote: "What about sending the scanned notebook per mail to the people interested?"

I think that maybe this was what Varecia meant by suggesting pdf kind?

Yes, this is a good option too. But there is always a possibility that the pdf kind ends up on internet anyway eventually. Or is there?

message 284: by Varecia (new)

Varecia | 956 comments Johanna, I unterstand your feelings perfectly :-) I don`t think the pages should be posted on the internet for everybody to see, but I think it would be nice for those who contribute to see what the other active members of the group wrote.

That's why I thought a pdf with the scans would be a good idea; it could be mailed to all interested contributors after the book is completed.

Something we used to do in a RL group when we were afraid a notebook would get lost - we decided on a paper format and everybody wrote or drew one page, which was send to one person who scanned them and bound the original pages together. So we had the scanned version for every contributor and one very special original for the person the book was dedicated to (although the bindings did never matched those KC posted yesterday :-).

Urgh, this is a long post too...

message 285: by Sabine (new)

Sabine | 3041 comments We can scan the the pages and convert them to photo-files ( have to think over this) and make a book here in my shop or in another shop.

I think we can all agree that if we want a PDF we won't post it online anywhere, right? I certainly wouldn't dream of doing that, especially with other people's personal writings.

I know exactly how you feel. :-) I was the very first one to write in it and was sad that I wouldn't see what others would add to it. And then it turned out that I got to read it TWICE in two different UK Meets (2013 and 2014) — and it was SO COOL. So yeah, it would be nice if everyone who contributed would be able to take a look inside it in some way or another.

Our Traveling Notebook's next destinations:

Carlita (US) <---This is where the Notebook currently is.
Karen (US)
Felice (US)
Jordan (US)
Alison (New Zealand)
Sabine (Germany)
Varecia (Germany)
Calathea (Germany)
Hambel (UK)
Idamus (Denmark)
Haldis (US)

If I'll send a brand new Notebook on its way next week, would any of you want to have that one visiting you? With two Notebooks we wouldn't have to wait such a long time for our turn.

message 296: by Haldis (new)

Haldis | 1288 comments New here but here's my two cents...
The one that's out is in the US, how bout the new (if you do a second) one hit Denmark and Germany and the UK. Then which ever of the two is available first, send to NZ. Or just start the new one in NZ?

When I did the Traveling Tennis Ball with my dog on Facebook, we tried to put a time limit on how long the ball could stay so people weren't waiting forever. We also tried to make sure it was with someone who was attending a meet or event that pertained to our group so he/she could get pictures with the ball at that event.

Anywhos...just a couple thoughts....I haven't had a chance yet to read all the posts on this thread, so this is it for now. :-)

This is a very good point, Johanna. Losing the notebook would not be good. Now I am worried my postal system will be awful and lose it and then I would cry (and everyone else might cry, too). The thought that just came to me is, what if we do the PDF thing, then print out a copy and mail it around to the people who want to see it? The notebook could become the next travelling book with the original safely retired now. Then we also don't have to worry so much about it being online. Since there are a fair few of us who want to see it in all its glory, it would eliminate the risk of loss or damage to the original. And the new notebooks could begin their travels, guilt-free. There's another idea to add to the pile.

message 298: by Sabine (new)

Sabine | 3041 comments When the book comes to me, Hans can make photos and with the photos is possible to make a book in the shop I work. Then we can send a new book around and this copy, so that everbody can read it. We can use a new SD card and send the SD card to Johanna, then were only one copy of the texts in circulation.

Some kind of time limit would certainly be a good idea. I know I held unto the notebook way too long when it visited me the last time...

This is why I love this group so much. There's so much diversity, creativity, interaction, goodwill and kindness here. (((HUGS)))

Yes, I think making a PDF file (and a print) out of the Traveling Notebook is a good idea and I also think Sabine's offer to make a actual book out of it is a wonderful idea.

Practical thing about sending the current Notebook around is that it fits in an envelope (that fits in a mailbox) and can be send as a letter. If we include another book (copy of the first notebook) in the same parcel, sending it will be a bit more expensive, I would assume. But if that isn't a problem for you guys it won't be a problem for me.
