SleeplessBookExplorer (laceebookexplorer) I was recently reading a blog post from this girl named Bethany. She said that she has only read 3 books that have a character named Bethany and all three books depict Bethany as being a "bad" person. And she was furious. So I was wondering if anyone has ever read a book where their name was a character of someone you didn't like. I have not found any book character with my name and spelled the same way. If anyone has, I would love for you to message me and tell me. Post the book(s) your name was found in and what you did or didn't like about the character named after you.

Lori Lyn (lori_lyn) | 5 comments Good question, Lacee! Yes, I have read books where a character has a name that has negative connotations for me. Can't recall the details, sorry. It did take some effort to overcome my bias but I was able to do it.

I was actually written into a book as a small-role supporting character and the author used a period appropriate version of my name. I was an "ex-mistress" to the hero! Very fun.

I have an extremely common name that is spelled a ton of different ways, although my spelling isn't the most common. I never take it personally if a character happens to have one of those versions and is nasty.

Mari Sloan (marisloan) | 15 comments My name is Mary (spelled Mari) and they are always pure and bland. I'd like to get in trouble every so often!

message 4: by Mia (new)

Mia | 49 comments my name was not very popular before a couple of years ago and have yet to find a book that has my name in it at all, or isn't a little girl. I have seen the name lacee in a few books but cannot remember the names of the novels. however it was spelt Lacey.

Stephi ♥ All the Steph's, Stephi's, and Stephanie's I have come across been have mean and horrible, or suck-ups. I don't like to think that I am mean, most people say I'm rather nice. I haven't come across many though, probably only one or two. I hate it though when someone else abuses my name, its like I let you use my name, but you turn the character into a nightmare, not happy! But at least for me, Steph isn't that common, if I was called Jess or Sarah or something of that ilk, I would be having a tantrum about name abuse every other night!

message 7: by Lori (new)

Lori Lyn (lori_lyn) | 5 comments Since Stephanie is my sister's name, and I love her to pieces, I promise if I use the name to make her a wonderful person, Stephi! ;)

message 8: by Erin (new)

Erin I don't recall anyone with my name off the top of my head. I don't know that I'd care if they were bad girls or not, though. I mean, it's my name, but it isn't me. Now, if someone I knew used my name and made her insufferable, I might take it personally. LOL

message 9: by Lori (new)

Lori Lyn (lori_lyn) | 5 comments Erin! My friend, Diana Ballew, named her last heroine Erin in her second book, Immortal Prey. It's also the name of our other friend and author Erin McCauley (that's how Diana picked the name )!
Immortal Prey by Diana Ballew
The Truth by Erin McCauley

message 10: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Martin | 11 comments My name is Rebecca, and is the title of a book with a truly awful person named Rebecca in it. Daphne du maurier's Rebecca is a woman who is malicious and fake, carries on multiple affairs, including one with her cousin, and is eventually killed by her husband. Fail.

Mia Thermopolis from The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot! Her name is actually Amelia, but everyone just calls her Mia

Holy crap! That's awesome. I shall now have to add her to my reading list. Thanks for the heads up!

message 14: by Erin (new)

Erin I just added Immortal Prey to my "want to read" list. Thanks again for suggesting it.

If you guys know anyone named Celia who feels left out, that's the title of my book.

Celia by Erin Britt

message 15: by Sam (new)

Sam (sam222) I think I've read one book with the name Sam in it and it was a guy. I've never read one with my full name.

message 16: by Megan (new)

Megan (clark-kent) | 9 comments I've never found one with a Megan in it :(

message 17: by Nancym (new)

Nancym (nancym1031) | 15 comments My first name is Nancy and only recall the Nancy Drew series. I think the name petered out after that.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

My name's Olivia, just imagine the joy I had when I learned there was a whole series of picture books written about Olivia The Pig. They are actually some of my favorite, considering I was just reading when they came out. I've also been told that I resemble her personality traits. It'd be strange if it was because I read those at a young age o_O

My other friend, Chantilly White, wrote one of her latest with the heroine of Mia! Unwrapped by Chantilly White

message 21: by Nelly (new)

Nelly I don't think I've ever read a book with a character called Nelly in it, but there have been several tv programmes where they are always the loser!

message 22: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (originally_elle) | 250 comments I've never come across a book where "Lauren" is the character's name

Oh, my sister has Inkheart :) I've always hated being called Meg haha, I guess that's why I didn't think of it.
And I'll have to check it out :) thankyou!

message 24: by Paw (new)

Paw | 2 comments Ive read a lot of books with names NOAH, JUDE, DANIEL and ABBY in it -_-

message 25: by Alix (new)

Alix Fish | 5 comments The only books I've read with a version of my name is the Alex Rider series. I doubt I'll ever find one with my spelling!

message 26: by Klancy (new)

Klancy Hoover-Davis I haven't read any books with characters having my name lol :P

message 27: by Dean (new)

Dean MacAllister (deanmacallister) My protagonists name is Tagden Fitts...I'm sure there isn't one out there...

message 28: by Robin (new)

Robin Mahle (robinmahle) | 26 comments I'm going to have to google it now. I must find a book with my name in it! And not an English one where Robin is a man:) there's plenty I've read with my sister's name in it...Katherine.

message 29: by Ashley (last edited Apr 21, 2013 10:44AM) (new)

Ashley | 38 comments Whenever the name Ashley is used in books she's usually the "slutty bitch" or some other type of mean, self-centered girl. That really annoys me. It's like a stereotype for my name! Never in my life have I read a book where a character named Ashley was a nice girl. I consider myself nice. My friends and classmates say I'm nice but no Ashley book characters are nice.

The Princess Diaries. Technically her name is Amelia but she likes being called Mia.

message 31: by Cora (new)

Cora Tea Party Princess (corazie) | 36 comments I've never read my name, Cora Linn, in a book. It's supposed to be Corra Linn but my dad and the registrar spelled it wrong.

I've read of Cora's and variations of my name (like Coraline. Thanks Neil Gaiman for ensuring that everyone I meet spells my name wrong) but never a Cora Linn.

I'm named after a waterfall, and artists and writers have been inspired by it (Wordsworth also spelled it wrong, Cora instead of Corra) but no one seems to have used the name.

message 32: by Robert (new)

Robert Spake (ManofYesterday) | 61 comments I'm sure there are plenty of characters named Robert around but I can't remember reading about one and disliking them.

message 33: by Karen (new)

Karen Whiteandnerdy | 13 comments The babysitter's little sister series are about a Karen. The only one I've read is Karen's Bully. I can't for the life of me remember what I thought of the book but I loved that on the cover of the edition I had, Karen looked remarkably like I did at that age. Same ginger ponytail and big owl glasses.

Have you tried the Stephanie Plum series? She is one the best characters I have read in a while. Shw would defiantly be my best friend lol.

message 35: by Maddie (new)

Maddie (maddiemoiselle) | 9 comments The only Maddie I've ever come across in a book was Where I'd Like To Be, but that was geared more for little kids. Never actually finished it, either. I also remember that in Charlie St. Cloud there was a restaurant (? I think?) called Maddie's, but they didn't go into much detail. My full name is Madison and I read a couple of the Madison Finn books but again, those are children's stories. I haven't seen either name in more adult books.

message 36: by Bay (new)

Bay The only book I've read with my name is a children's book, where I would guess that it would be called in English "No, no, naughty Rikke" x'D My parents always use it to mock me

message 37: by Bay (new)

Bay Robert D. wrote: "I'm sure there are plenty of characters named Robert around but I can't remember reading about one and disliking them." Robert Langdon - Da vince code :D

message 38: by Laura (new)

Laura | 168 comments I can't think of a Laura character off the top of my head it is quite a dull name though in my opinion

message 39: by Arthur (new)

Arthur Daigle | 5 comments I don't see my name turn up in books all that often, but that's because I mostly read science fiction and fantasy. They tend towards more unusual or made up names. When I write I try to pick unusual names to make the character more memorable, which has the added benefit that I don't antagonize readers with the same name.

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

My name is Marta, there is only one book I remember right now, an Icelandic children's book called Marta Smarta. It was okay and I didn't have a problem with the character, but I hated it when people I don't know well started calling me that name to be 'friendly'. I'm really happy that it wasn't a very popular book and the name calling died down eventually.

message 41: by Erin (new)

Erin I read one with Joanne, but I cannot for the life of me remember the series of books. My Aunt bought them for me as gifts. One character's name is J. Hillary and she was orphaned (I think) during WWII in the London bombings. She always went by Hillary because she couldn't pronounce her first name and people couldn't tell if she was saying Joan or Joanne. This is going to bug me all day.

message 42: by Isabelle (new)

Isabelle (izzie5525) I read one with an Isabel and that is almost spelled the same way. She was okay. At first she was cold hearted but she started warming up by the end of the trilogy. Another book has an Isabelle and she is like a druggy party girl...so not me. and she was mean! reallyyyy mean! And the book im reading now has an Isabelle in it and its too soon to tell whether or not I like her. I guess she is okay so far; just hard to get close to.

message 43: by Erin (new)

Erin I just won an award for a short story I wrote that had Isabel as a character. She was a nice woman who was overwhelmed and feeling guilty for feeling overwhelmed. Definitely not a party girl or cold hearted.

message 44: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (redsunflowers) | 6 comments My name is not terribly uncommon among women who were born in the late '70s and early to mid '80s, but I don't seem to see it much in books. Often if I do, it's the character who was killed off by a murderer or something.

'hopeless' by Colleen hoover has the main character as hope..

message 46: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Crawford (sharonacrawford) My first name appears in the Sharon McCone books by Marcia Mueller and that pleases me as I not only like this Sharon and her feisty character, I also like reading (and writing) mysteries.

But when you have a common first and last name (Sharon Crawford) what do you do do promote your book? Especially when there is an esteemed author of computer books with the same name and you aren't a computer expert but get mixed up with her? I did what my publisher suggested - added my middle initial to make it Sharon A. Crawford for Beyond the Tripping Point.

Cheer.

Sharon A.

message 47: by Megan (new)

Megan Totten There's a Megan in The Girl on the Train! Any other suggestions? Trying to find something new!

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

I am trying to start writing a book (I am only 17 and it's scary). This thread is great for name suggestions for my main and supporting characters. I was leaning toward Meghan or Megan for the main character before I even saw this conversation, and now I feel like this is confirmation.

Tammy | 31 comments I have seen my name a couple of times but never as one of the main characters. Nothing of much notice. Good subject though.
