Not complaining at all! This is one time when tardiness is paying off:)

I'm reading a book that is turning out to be pretty good. It's Secret Maneuvers by Jessie Lane, a blog tour review. I'm not a fan of the cover and it had me drag my feet opening it to get started. Now that I have, I wish I'd started it earlier. You be the judge of this cover.

Secret Maneuvers (Ex Ops, #1) by Jessie Lane

It would make me drag my feet too. For one thing, I hate the green in that cover. It isn't appealing at all. Amazing how much a book cover can influence your choice of books to read. I'm definitely a visual person.

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15062 comments Mod
I know!!! I would have picked this book up at least two weeks ago. I was asked to review the book for their blog tour (we had already approved the spot so I said okay). It is absolutely wonderful.

message 106: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11216 comments Mod
That should be a wake up call to authors to make sure their book cover is appealing. And I realize it's not always the author's choice. But I would probably never read that book based on the cover. Good to hear it's really good. I may take a look...I'm just so backed up with books to read & review right now...It's hard to just pick whatever I want to read.

message 107: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15062 comments Mod
I'm backed up, too, which made it even more painful to open the book.

A lot of authors get in their heads about the covers. They're sometimes too close to the story and don't understand how it is much more important to connect that cover with READERS versus some aspect of the story (I've yet to figure this one out).

message 108: by Quynh (new)

Quynh (quynh_o) | 1269 comments I think half the time, my interest in a book is from the cover appeal. Then I'll read the blurb to see if it's the right book for me. I think my least favorite covers are those computer generated fake 3D looking people in front of some random backdrop.

message 109: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1038 comments I agree about the covers needing to appeal to readers, but at the same time, there's nothing more annoying than when the person on the cover doesn't have the right hair color or if the main character is supposed to be voluptuous and the cover chick is a stick. Srsly.

Sara, it is truly annoying! I read one like that recently (heroine had a completely different color hair on the cover and a big deal was made about her hair color in the story).

Uh, Dawn...just so I can live vicariously...what kind of chocolate, dark or milk?

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11216 comments Mod
I have that Wendy's homemade chocolate Frosty recipe too, Dawn...it works perfectly!

Covers are just so important to me. I, too, hate seeing a blonde on the cover and read repeatedly about the hero running his hands through her long dark hair. Or the model thin girl on the cover and the hero has his hands FULL of her voluptuous curves and breasts. Give me a break!

message 116: by Susan (new)

Susan More than once or twice, I have been reading and stopped to look at the cover and thought..What???

Sharon Michael Sandra - *Starshine* wrote: "I, too, hate seeing a blonde on the cover and read repeatedly about the hero running his hands through her long dark hair."

I don't notice it as much book covers, I'm more oblivious to covers, but a lot of this is why I've never been able to enjoy movies or TV series made from books I really enjoy.

The latest example is the "Longmier" TV series ... absolutely love the books and the characters but two of the three main characters in the TV series are just wrong ... the books make a major point of the female deputy being Italian and dark haired ... the actress is BLONDE ... and the Native American friend in the book is a big man ... the actor isn't and doesn't even look Cheyenne to me, probably something many people don't notice but I was raised near the Cheyenne reservation! I tried to follow it and just couldn't ...

Samantha (samswindle) | 23 comments LOL!! That's so funny about covers!! I hate it when the cover and story doesn't match.
Now that I mostly buy books through my Kindle, I don't pay as much attention to the covers. I can see them on my Kindle, but it's not the same as holding the book.

message 119: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11216 comments Mod
You're right about books on the Kindle...covers aren't so important then. Most of the time, I never even look at them there. But on books in my hands, very important!

message 120: by Susan (new)

Susan Does anyone out there recommend the current series by Jaci Burton?

Okay, I read eBooks exclusively on my iPad and the covers are a huge big deal:) Not so much, though on my Kindle device.

message 126: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11216 comments Mod
Hadn't thought about that, J. I can certainly see where covers would matter on the iPad. I have the original Kindle and it does nothing for book covers. I seldom even notice them on it. I'm sure later model Kindles are probably much better especially something like the Kindle Fire. I love my Kindle but I just read on it.

message 127: by Susan (new)

Susan I have a Kobo Arc, which is the same as the Kindle Fire. The covers show up beautifully on it. It was the cover for Lover At Last that had me upgrading.

message 128: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11216 comments Mod
I've been looking at Kindle Fire. My trusty old Kindle is great, had it a few years, read all the time on it, so...not sure why I think I need a new one but those Kindle Fires look so tempting.

message 129: by Susan (new)

Susan I also wanted one device that would do for both the Kobo and Kindle releases. I have some books that are only available in Kindle, and at the beginning of its release the Kindle Fire was not available in Canada. We had to wait almost a year for a tablet reader.

message 130: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11216 comments Mod
So does Kobo Arc do both releases? For some reason, I thought Kobo was only in Canada...or rather not in the US. I had not ever heard of Kobo until I heard it mentioned in GRs. I've just been on Amazon forever so the Kindle made the most sense for me. I'm sure they're all amazing. Anytime I can carry 100's of books in my hand and take them everywhere I go, it's a good thing! :)

message 131: by Susan (new)

Susan I researched first to make the decision on which one to pick. Kobo will let you download the Kindle releases, but Kindle will not let you download the Kobo releases. I know the Kobo is in Europe as well. I don't know about Australia or the US.

message 132: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15062 comments Mod
I buy books from Kobo and I'm in the US. I download them to my other reading apps (Marvin, Sony Reader, Diesel and Bluefire). Kobo has an app but I'm not crazy about the layout.

message 133: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hoover (sandrahoover) | 11216 comments Mod
I don't know why I hadn't come across Kobo before...just always been into Amazon. I just took time to look around the Kobo site. I did notice Entwined With You is $9.99 on Kobo and $8.89 on Amazon. I'm sure there are probably some books that are cheaper on Kobo than Amazon too. I do know I'm addicted to that "one click" to purchase button and use it way too often!

message 134: by Susan (new)

Susan Books are one of those things that are always more expensive here...but no one can ever explain why.

message 135: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15062 comments Mod
One of the benefits of a tablet is that you don't have to choose...you can comparison shop and buy from where you want. Each has something I like (Amazon's Kindle app is my favorite, Diesel gives me reward dollars for my reviews, Kobo has a lot of sales, etc.).

I'm just greedy.

message 136: by Susan (new)

Susan Hmmm, I'm not familiar with Diesel.

Must say I have the kindle app on my iPad but much prefer reading through iBooks. Just can't get use to the kindle set up.

As for covers? In one of my other groups we're having this very discussion: how important is the cover. I also get annoyed when the cover doesn't depict the characters ! But it seems that the author sometimes have no control over what gets used. Don't understand that but that's what came out. For me? I judge a book by its cover. I know I shouldn't but I do ;-)

message 140: by Susan (new)

Susan More than once I have read the author grumbling about the cover of their book. I remember one author about 10 years ago offering to send her readers a smiley faced sticker to put over the hero's face.

From what I have read, it all depends on the contract the author has with the publisher. Some authors have creative control, some have just creative input and some have none at all.

message 141: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15062 comments Mod
It is actually more the norm for most authors to NOT have control over their covers if they're signed with a major publisher. Things seem to be changing with some of the newer publishers like Entangled who seem to have the cover artists actually read the book!:) It's the self-published authors that really need to pay attention to the idea that readers really do judge a book by it's cover.

That would be really cool, because they could include details on the cover that tie into the story, but even if they just asked the author to provide stats on the characters, you know? Like...
Heroine: 5'6", medium brown hair (or whatever romancy word the hero favors... mahogany...), large aquamarine eyes, voluptuous figure, wears a dress the color of her eyes in an important scene.

Hero: 6'2", blue-black hair, grass green eyes, lean muscular physique
Or whatever... That wouldn't be hard AT ALL.

message 143: by Jonetta (new)

Jonetta (ejaygirl) | 15062 comments Mod
I agree, that would at a minimum get close! I'm just finding with the covers coming out of Entangled that they seem to capture the "vibe" of the characters and/or the story. They never miss on the physical details.

It makes me feel like I can trust their covers to be "what you see is what you get."
