Ok. I know I said I was starting this a month ago but for some reason it so did not happen. So I am starting for reals this time... I read the first 3 chapters already... Convenient title I ought say... Like the way it's heading and a little freaked out as well...

Just finished it and I gotta say I feel so bad for Raffe, and Penryn.. And of course such a twist for Penryn's sister... I think the writing was excellent... The story had so much but at the same time it was flowing so perfect... Onto whatever more adventures and humanities faith....

19% (view spoiler)[I'm feeling the opposite from you, Allison! I find the writing awful and stilted. But I'll admit it has begun to flow a lot better now. At first I almost stopped reading because it was so bad, but I started to get into the characters. I LOVE Raffe even though he's ridiculously amused while so badly injured. And I think that Penryn is amazingly strong and hard, but still kindhearted. Once we learned that her mother was tagging along, I knew they couldn't get along because I knew Penryn would have to leave her eventually to find her sister. But I was very pleasantly surprised that her mom has a mental illness. It's SO unique! Love it. I couldn't put the book down last night. (hide spoiler)]

Aww I absolutely love Penryn and Raffe. They're just so adorable... I hope there's more of them in the next two books as well as this one.
I love Penryn so far. She seems like a strong character. She just wants her sister back, and is trying to get her back. The mom is an interesting character. I can't help but feel there's something fishy going on with her character, and it's not because she has a disorder. Her character just seems... off and odd/strange. (hide spoiler)]

99% (view spoiler)[ Well, I have gotten used to the writing and now I can't get enough! I really like this book. But I don't LOVE it anymore. The last half wasn't as good. But I love that the author isn't afraid to get her hands dirty.

I totally agree about the mother. There is def something going on with her.

I'm not completely convinced about this world. In a way, I'm so into the characters, but because of the writing I feel like this world is too superficial. It doesn't feel real. There's not enough detail for me. (hide spoiler)]

I've never read a book where the main character is paralyzed for the ending. I just feel bad for Raffe. He's stuck with these terrible wings and he's probably an even bigger target now. I want revenge for him. And I'll be so frustrated if he's barely in the next book.

I also feel bad for Penryn because she's got Paige back but I'm pretty positive Paige is a monster that will need to be put down. But I'll wager their mother will get them kicked out of the resistance long before Paige starts eating people. (hide spoiler)]

I just finished the book (view spoiler)[ --And I can't help but agree with you Whitney. The ending of the book was very interesting. I hope the next book goes more in detail with what the Angels were planning to do. Because, I'm kind of interested as to why they had those tubes filled of scorpion/angel like creatures and what they were hoping to achieve with them. Also, what they were planning on doing with those children. And if they're letting them loose into the world to wreck even more havoc? Cause we saw them earlier in the book in the forest, and they were most likely the ones who ate those people on the side of the road. They're just bizarre to me..

I do feel bad for Raffe, as well. I have a feeling (maybe?) the next book will be more focused on him. I read the back of the book and it says that he has to choose between getting his wings back and Penryn.. so maybe the book focuses on him? I don't know.

I know something bad is going to happen with the mother. Maybe she's not bad as I first thought, but there's seriously just something about her character that rubs me the wrong way. I know she's up to something. If not, then I'll just look like a fool :P (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 8
Currently, I'm not liking Penryn. I know she's worried about her sister but it's a bit much. She's coming off as some cruel, cold killer-type and it's making her less a likable and a less realistic character. Less realistic because you don't suddenly become a hardened survivor with weeks. That takes time and even then, you don't have to be a jerk.

Is it just me or is this book a bit like The Hunger Games? I mean, not the actual games part but the family situation. How Penryn is towards her mother and sister.
I think the author is trying to turn Penryn into Katniss. It's not working.

In full disclosure, I should tell you that I'm not a fan of fallen angel stories. I think most of it stems from, fallen angels being heroes offends my religious beliefs. Also, why would a divine being get involved with us lowly humans romantically? Knowing this, some GR friends suggested that I read this series, so after dragging my feet, here I am.

Finished Chapter 10: So far it's been a great story: good action and interesting characters. I like Penryn being tough, I am not a Mary Sue fan. (view spoiler)[I think a lot of her toughness is more bravado than true heartlessness. But I was annoyed that she would hit the angel on his wounded back to get him to answer her questions and mutilate his wings. I'm surprised that he didn't hurt her. Penryn's ability to torture was disturbing and didn't make her likeable.

Penryn's mother was way past normal eccentric to fast train to crazy town. I thought it was interesting that her craziness kept some of the other survivors away. Sending your daughter to self defense classes to protect her against demons and yourself was sad and scary.

Do we really need to know about her training and how she fights? It's like the author feels the need to convince us that Penryn knows how to fight and stuff because, apparently, unless you can hold your own in a fist-fight, you're not strong.

After Chapter 23: Resistance movement is theoretically hopeful, but the reality sounds futile. (view spoiler)[Do you or do you not turn in the angel to the human resisters? I think the angel would've killed the fighters, even injured, so let them live to fight another day.

Penryn taking out the obnoxious bully, Boden, was barbaric but impressive. I understand the leadership rationale to fighting and betting, but it seemed insensitive not to protect the weak from violence and bullying. In that situation, wouldn't only bullies prey on weaker opponents or the desperate bullied just lash out when they've had enough. Either way, I don't know if I'd want to live under the that system. The strong are needed to protect the weak, not control or abuse them. The ideal violent warrior is not necessarily the best protector. In this vain, since the angels are tougher and stronger and unmerciful, they should control or destroy the weaker humans. Okay, so if not their system, what could you do to release tensions...gladiator games?...I mean sparring? Competitions? Draw for the type of competition and winner gets a portion of the bets. I'm not very creative, nor am I a good manager, so I don't know what would work. I'm a reluctant leader and an eager follower, so I can only criticize.

Should Penryn have returned to camp? What do you think was out in the woods? I think the original chaos was caused by an angel, but I have no idea what those small creatures were that attacked Penryn.

I had my daughters take Tae Kwon Do when they were younger just for self-defense. And I was sad when they got too busy to continue, because I actually think self-defense is a more valuable life skill than soccer, volleyball or softball. It would be interesting to see Raffe and Penryn (view spoiler)[ join the resistance. But I don't see Penryn giving up her immediate search for Paige, but it would be more effective to have help in her rescue attempt. I don't know why Raffe is with the group. The resistance that humans seem to be putting up against the angels is so trivial to be a concern. (hide spoiler)]

If the angels turn out to be dicks then I would like a few good angels to be on the side of the humans. It would prove that being angels isn't what makes them bad. If they were people, they would still be bad. Because if the fight was all angels vs all humans, it would become kind of a race thing. And that irks me.

True, but I hate it when the fallen angels are the good guys...that's kind of opposed to The Story. But I agree the racist thing wouldn't be as good.

The police and FBI are often good guys, so why can't fallen angels be the bad guys? We'll see...

LOL true it is a more valuable life skill, and I do like Penrye, I think Penrye is what she has to be because she has been the parent of her family for a long time, but I also think that her mother has some great hindsight.

Yeah I might that at the time it would have seemed like the mom was crazy for making her go through all that but in hindsight she made her daughter's chances of surviving better.
