Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1) by Cassandra Clare
Magic is dangerous—but love is more dangerous still.

When sixteen-year-old Tessa Gray crosses the ocean to find her brother, her destination is England, the time is the reign of Queen Victoria, and something terrifying is waiting for her in London's Downworld, where vampires, warlocks and other supernatural folk stalk the gaslit streets. Only the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the world of demons, keep order amidst the chaos.

Kidnapped by the mysterious Dark Sisters, members of a secret organization called The Pandemonium Club, Tessa soon learns that she herself is a Downworlder with a rare ability: the power to transform, at will, into another person. What’s more, the Magister, the shadowy figure who runs the Club, will stop at nothing to claim Tessa's power for his own.

Friendless and hunted, Tessa takes refuge with the Shadowhunters of the London Institute, who swear to find her brother if she will use her power to help them. She soon finds herself fascinated by—and torn between—two best friends: James, whose fragile beauty hides a deadly secret, and blue-eyed Will, whose caustic wit and volatile moods keep everyone in his life at arm's length . . . everyone, that is, but Tessa. As their search draws them deep into the heart of an arcane plot that threatens to destroy the Shadowhunters, Tessa realizes that she may need to choose between saving her brother and helping her new friends save the world. . . . and that love may be the most dangerous magic of all.

Heather James (makexbelieve) | 14 comments I really enjoyed this book - I thought it was even better than TMI series; the setting and era just added a really unique dimension to the fantasy elements.

Tessa, Will and Jem are also all really strong characters. I felt that Tessa was easier to relate to than Clary - she felt more realistic.

There's also some clever links and parallels to TMI - Henry brainstorming ideas that we see working in the other series, Church the cat, Magnus... It's all very cleverly done.

Samantha (samjay73) I loved the storyline, how Tessa came to be in London. The way she discovered what she can do. Meeting Will and Jem for the first time. The friendships that blossom between the characters. I haven't read the City of Bones and that series yet. I am not sure if reading this series first will help with the other or not.
Henry reminds me a little of Mr Weasley from HP series. I feel as though Charlotte is not as old as her motherly character is portrayed. (this comes from reading book 2 & 3) I like too that there is the good guy and the bad boy, both of which attract Tessa in different ways. The story behind Jem's addiction was also interesting and a little sad.
All in all a fantastic novel (and the next two get even better 3 being my favourite!)

Irene (irenemikhaylova) | 14 comments I haven't finished the book yet, but I'm almost at the end. And I decided to start with "prequel series" Infernal Devices before starting Mortal Instruments in hope it will help me to better understand what happens in City of Bones before it comes out this summer.

So far I like it very much. Interesting story line, nice, lovable characters. And Charlotte is 25 in the first book. But before it was mentioned I thought she was older than that :)

I'm also curious why Jem and Will are close friends and what happened to Will's parents, why he decided to leave them.

Hopefully I get answers in this book or next ones.

Samantha (samjay73) you will get answers Irene
