Karen Kramer-ley | 4 comments YA or children's story set in Copenhagen possibly post WWII. Likely a Scholastic book club selection late 1960s. Young girl protagonist-family in hard financial times. Descriptions of Tivoli Gardens, pencil case, oxford shoes, and blood-oranges for Christmas have stuck in my head for 40 years. Anyone remember this story?

Karen, I've moved this down to Unsolved For you. More people will see it down there.

If you read this 40 years ago--did it feel new then or old?

Karen Kramer-ley | 4 comments The setting was a time in the past so I guess it felt old-if that is what you mean. It is a dim memory so I am not sure-it could have been a contemporary story but with a culturally different lifestyle-maybe they were poor because it was a single Mom raising her daughter, rather than a post war period-all vague recollections of the story line. Just love my
memories of it and as an English teacher I like to collect literature that left a lasting impression...

``Laurie (laurielynette) I remember a book called "Miriam" about a young Jewish girl during WW2 in Denmark. It's been so long ago I can't remember the author. Does that title ring a bell?

Also, maybe Lotte's Locket?

message 7: by Karen (new)

Karen Kramer-ley | 4 comments Thanks folks. Neither of these rings a bell. I don't think it had many illustrations-more of an upper elementary young adult novel I think. There was something about having to take a roomer in the home because they needed the money, but I don't remember there being an American stepfather. It is an awfully dim memory. I suppose it could be Lotte's Locket. Thanks for the suggestions-I will follow up on these leads and report if the case is solved...
