Cat Do you think that Bill getting attacked by Greyback was bad? Or did he benefit from it in anyway? Mybe Fluer likes a little wildness. ;-)

I finished reading this book after I read Deathly Hallows I admit.

Avani I don't think it was good...it didn't really provide any benefits, did it? Besides what Fleur said as she made the best of the situation (she can cook meat less, which is more to her liking).

Rosen Trevithick It gave the book a little more grit but I don't think it benefited the characters.

Faith wrote: "Who the hell would think getting mauled by a werewolf as a good thing? You think they had better sex after the incident? That's just weird."

It's weird that your name is Faith but you're an atheist. I thought people generally lived up to their names...

Rosen Trevithick Maybe she has faith in science.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

You don't have to have faith in science, though. Well, besides in that it's not all gonna fall apart all of a sudden and have a God behind it all, but then that's just blind faith again and why agnosticism is the position of the logician.

I mean who associates faith with atheism? Now that's weird. I have faith there is no God and that it is a brutal, cold world!

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

You know, you'd generally associate faith with more endearing sentiment like, "I hope my grandparents are looking down on me from heaven," or such.

Rosen Trevithick Some people have no faith in science. That's why they turn to crackpot therapies instead of modern medicine.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I have faith that when you die you're just gonna rot in a coffin and be eaten by worms and shit!!

You know that doesn't sound right.

Rosen Trevithick I fear we've veered off topic.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

Um, the point of science is that you shouldn't need to have faith, though of course we all will do at times. Like, you don't know for sure your television won't explode when you click the switch, but you click it anyway. And that's fine and reasonable. But were you to extend that faith to "science" as a whole then that's no better than any religious faith and just silly really...

Like, "faith" is what the atheist mocks the theist most about, you know. I know you've heard, "Hur durr, u beliebe in God but u can't see God," right?

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Rosen wrote: "I fear we've veered off topic."

We should go back to thinking "What if Harry Potter was more like Twilight?"

Sorry Evanna :P

Rosen Trevithick Many areas of life require faith because we are rarely in possession of all the facts. Yes, the word is used most in the context of religion but it can be applied to our interpersonal relationships, decision making and even choice in television.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Agreed. You're not living up to your name anything special in being just the same as anyone else, though :P You know, like how a kid named 'Loser' is doomed to failure and how his twin brother 'Winner' is fated for success.

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol, this was way off topic :3

Rosen wrote: "It gave the book a little more grit but I don't think it benefited the characters."

Thinking about it, it does somewhat. I think it's to stress the old maxim "Don't judge a book by its cover," throwing in Bill with Lupin so as not to have Lupin look like just some complete miracle.

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

There. Back on topic.

Akash Kulgod I liked the discussion on faith..Lets go back to it.

Kingkiller wrote: "I have faith that when you die you're just gonna rot in a coffin and be eaten by worms and shit!!

you can't be eaten by shit..And yes you are eaten by worm, maggots and other bacteria...And it may not sound right but it is the truth you know...

.

It's not necessarily the truth though, or not what I said anyway. It might not be JUST that we're eaten by maggots, worms and stuff. There could be a whole other plane of existence after, multiple planes, an infinite number of different planes of existence even. It's impossible to know. Lack of evidence is not evidence of lack, as they say. And then I personally think it takes a cold heart to resign oneself unwavering to atheism, to never cry out or wish from the bottom of your soul after some dearly departed. Love spurs my faith, as it should others and as it does J.K. Rowling which is clearly evinced in her books. And, ummm, well, that's about all I've got on the topic of faith :3 God is good! I hope...

;D

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Of course, I believe atheism a position of faith, too. That is, the denial of God. But then you'll hear such a viewpoint flouted, lack of evidence being referred to as if to elevate the position above one of faith, nonsense in reply. Again, the logician just cannot know. Agnosticism, not denial, is the position of the truly rational.

I really think atheism an absurd way of viewing the world. It's but to resign oneself to monstrosity one might think, to the cold, brutality of the world, all life to be eventually snuffed out. DEPRESSING.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

And I know I pretty much said that already, but it's DEPRESSING.

message 22: by Akash (last edited Apr 15, 2013 07:53AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Akash Kulgod I wouldn't say it's depressing..I like how someone said once on GR
'Whether you believe God made a flower or not the flower is still beautiful. Whether you believe you´ll see your family and friends again in another life they are still the most important thing in the world to you."

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, and that's why I can bear not knowing for sure, but I will never resign myself to atheism. Think on the less fortunate than yourself, those born to but darkness and pain. You would not insist upon reasoning behind it? something, anything, whatever alleviation at all to be had? My thinking is that God exists regardless, whether as a personal entity or not. Existence is God. But I would not have it be a monstrosity.

Rosen Trevithick Akash wrote: "I wouldn't say it's depressing..I like how someone said once on GR

Lovely. :-)

Currer Jean I think that Bill gettting attacked by the werewolf age the audience a chance to see Fleur in a new light. A lot of people, Molly and Ginny mainly, didn't like Fleur because she was prissy. Fleur was prissy, but that's not a character flaw. It gave Fleur to show that she was more than a pretty face, she had guts and love for a man who was leading a dangerous life style.

Rosen Trevithick That's true. Fleur's support of Bill is what makes Molly warm to her.

message 27: by D (new) - rated it 5 stars

D B I agree, Molly begins to accept Fleur. It was a great way to show more of Fleur personality, because in the beginning she was dull and prissy. But we see more of her and that was a good way to show it.

i know..Someone else had posted this on a discussion....

Kingkiller wrote: "Yes, and that's why I can bear not knowing for sure, but I will never resign myself to atheism. Think on the less fortunate than yourself, those born to but darkness and pain. You would not insist ..."

I would like to ask something here - those people who are born as you say to "pain and darkness" should they resign themselves to that fact and just pray to God hoping there situation will get better?? or should they try to improve it themselves??
According to me atheism is about not depending on things we don't know about but doing them ourself.. That's what i don't like about religion and faith its all talk and no action...

And in reply to the OP's question i think it was necessary for Bill to be bitten as you guys have pointed out that after that incident Fleur developed into a much better character

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

You could consider my faith more a wish. And J.K. Rowling believes in God too you know. It's not that I'm depending on anything, it's just that I really want something. And if I have to act in a certain manner that I consider appropriate to get that something, then so be it. The duality of man is a common subject, no? The dark thoughts? If I am to assign greater meaning to them, so be it. It feels as though it makes sense. But I would not die a fool waiting for some supernatural entity to come save me.

BubblesTheMonkey Not sure... haven't read the book in awhile and I don't have a very good memory.

Ok thats your opinion and i have mine..Nice discussing with you though...And it's funny how we got on this topic.....

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

It seems our discussion was fruitless really :P Maybe if you wished with me, we'd be more sure of results... Oh well, you enjoy the emptiness you believe in and would believe in.

Akash Kulgod Umm actually i'm agnostic so i'm ready to believe in both sides:P

Leon RE I don't think it added much to the story tbh. Yeah, it was bad but obviously with the Wolfbane potion they could control it better than in the past.
