John Overall, this is a pretty poor book. For anybody looking to seriously undertake web design who already has a good amount of sense for aesthetically pleasing design, but needs to know the details and fine print, I would recommend the Web Style Guide, which is online for free.

Cons:
A fifth of the book is the author showing off his own design skills; about another third is pictures of certain vague principles of design. Another quarter of the book is the text describing these vague principles. Nothing in detail that is worth reading that you can't find for free by reading some good design blogs.

Pros:
The chapter on Aesthetics was the best chapter of the book, mostly because it talked about the relative principles of design (such as grids) in a bit more detail, as well as providing some pointers to popular services related to various aesthetic principles - Adobe Kuler, Golden Ratio calculator, etc. But this doesn't really do a whole lot to prop up the rest of the book, unfortunately.

Overall impression:
Don't waste your time. Not worth the money.
