I read the book about 5 years ago. The plot is that the book is based on diary entries at first about a future post apocalypse event. Basically instead of zombies, the humans that are taken are turned into nocturnal monsters. So the setting takes place in a compound in northern California. They have lights set up around the perimeter run on a generator that is located at a separate site about a 1/2 day journey from the compound. There is also an elder lady from the time before whatever event happened that has all the 'knowings' of what the world was like. She ends up dying and eventually the creatures take over the wall at night since the generator fails. There is a team that is sent to check on the generator compound and that is when they find a weapons cache that no one knew about. The creatures also took over the generator compound and several persons are 'transformed' into the creatures. After a bit they decide to set out for a new destination with a small remaining group. They eventually end up settling in a compound in the Rockies that was a former military base. That is about all I can remember. .... Hope it jogs someones memory and someone can provide assistance.
