I have not read the book that this topic is about but I have listened to the Status Civilization. It is about a planet where all the deemed as criminals are send. From the blurb "On Omega, his only chance to advance himself -- and stay alive -- is to commit an endless series of violent crimes." - nothing to do with clothing.

This is an unusual book but I'll throw it out there. There is a small passage on page 83 describing what the colors mean.

Julie, that isn't my book. For one thing, I think that the publishing date is a little late--I really think it was from the 70's but since it's been a year or three since that decade, I decided to hedge my bets with the early 80's possibility.

And my book wasn't about a world of criminals, so it's not Gomez's suggestion.
