I have a tendency to not keep books around long. I have a bookshelf full, but it is not excessive. If I buy books now, I am eager to pass them on to my students or friends. And I don't want the book returned to me.

I do think that keeping 'meh' books on your bookshelf is wasteful. It's always a good idea to donate books to your local library if you're never going to re-read a book.
I look at ratings here on goodreads and eliminate books with low ratings off my TBR. I also consider what my friends say in their reviews.
Even though I have piles of unread books everywhere I have to be sure I will really dislike a book in order to give it away before I have read it. In the last 5 years this has happened maybe half a dozen times: Eldest, a Nicholas Sparks, a Sandra Brown, another modern Romance and a couple of Christian/Evangelical books.
I used to have to read everything but I have taught myself to give them 50 pages.
