I'm interested to see what everyone thinks of this book. I read it in high school and maybe once or twice since then.

Thanks for setting up the books of the month Jess <3
I just started rereading and I'm liking it but it's a little intense, like I have to read some sentences several times to get the meaning since there's a lot of poetic phrases and strange grammar.

No problem! Since I'm working at home now, I can spend more time being a mod. :D And this time I figured out how to message the whole group. I'm looking forward to reading this one again. I remember certain parts really well, but others are just blurs of memory.
Didn't read this book in HS. So this will be my first time reading. I'll probably miss all the symbolism the first time, let's be real.
This was the only book that I finished for my LIT class a couple of years ago. I actually finished it ahead of schedule.
I haven't read this since high school so I'm looking forward to re-reading. Maybe I'll like it better this time. :P
Lol as I'm going through this I realize that Gatsby is Regina George. Everyone is talking about him like "I hear he killed someone" "I hear he went to Oxford" "I hear he's a bootlegger" "I hear he does car commercials in Japan" and now he shows up at Nick's door in his Rolls Royce practically saying "get in loser, we're going shopping."
Lol. Gatsby, the original leader of the plastics.

Can't wait to finally read this. I borrowed a copy from a friend a few months ago and I am glad I waited until it was picked for book of the month.

lol I'm glad errbody enjoyed that.
When I was reading last night there was this one part that made me super sad for some reason especially imagining Leo's face doing it omg....
Do I need a spoiler cut? I mean I guess not it's just a page that doesn't really do anything and most of us have read it anyway well, then...
Tom and two other peeps ride up to Gatsby's house on horses just to I guess announce their presence and they've been there and the lady invites him to dinner, and while he's off getting ready to go with them, they get on their horses and leave and he comes out on the porch with his little jacket and hat and sees they've stood him up and oh my god I was just imagining the SADNESS AND THE PAIN. Omgggggggggg Gatsby you're so popular but nobody really cares about you
Can't you just imagine his sad little face

NOBODY LIKES ME
WHY

but really I think we've all been there and when I was reading I made a squeal of sadness for him. But I don't think I would have cared if I wasn't imagining poor sad Leo's face.

Those are hilarious. I especially love the Real Jay Gatsby.
I just want to share this because I'm a big nerd. I'm reading my old copy I bought sometime in high school. It's a 1953 edition with scribbles from 16 year-old-me, older me, someone in pencil, and at least 2 others.

That cover really is one of the most beautiful book covers ever. Wigs wrote: "i love the baby ones the best cuz that's exactly how it is in the book"
I completely forgot there even was a baby!

I love the "Later She Dumps Him" because Nick gets off too easy in a lot of discussions of this book. I remember in my class people assumed whatever he said was true, because he told them he was unbiased even though he CLEARLY WASN'T. I remember thinking that wow, these characters are pretty flat, prob cos he's only paying attnetion to his mancrush Gatsby... but that's my fav thing about first person narration, esp with an unreliable narrator, or else where's the fun and whats't he point.
Just finished...I had forgotten how shallow everyone is, the girls are very obviously shallow, as is Gatsby, but Nick is crazy too.
The book reminds me in some ways of The Count of Monte Cristo, but without the focus or discipline. I wonder how differently the book would be if written from Gatsby's perspective.
Hey guys I just got back from gatsby
I liked it def I thought Leo was perfect just absolutely the perfect obsessive innocent little dreamer
the beginning is a little over the top hammy/flashy maybe the first 1/4 or 1/3 hard to tell time in theaters but it was purposefully done to like show nick's wonderment at it all
but like once daisy meets gatsby (which was like the best scene maybe, aside from the big tom vs gatsby scene toward the end), it kind of slows down and becomes more intimate
it has flaws certainly, such as not being able to show nick's true nuances but that would probably happen no matter what, but tbh i don't really care i had a good time. oh and there's a ton of green/blue screen shots so hopefully that won't bother you there's a sheen of photoshop like quality to the outdoor shots but the interiors are lovely.
as someone who has a shelf full of spectacle movies that i like to watch while i do my art, i would probably buy it on bluray when it comes out

Glad to hear you liked it, Wigs! I might go see it with my mum for mother's day this weekend. It's getting mixed reviews (48% on Rotten Tomatoes), but I want to see it if only for the costumes and sets. It looks gorgeous and Leo does seem like he'd be a good Gatsby.
i think people who don't like broadway musical things (or baz) wouldn't like it because a lot of it feels like a bit like a stage production , but mostly in the first 1/3. I don't have much of a problem with that since i'm a huge broadway nut oop. so like my best friend who hates musicals would hate the movie (not that there's singing but she doesn't like the sort of stageyness that comes with it
I mean you've seen the preview you know what you're looking at and whether or not you're going to like it simply based on whether you like spectacle or not
tbh i think it breathes life in a book, for me, that feels a little bland? even though the book has much more depth, i still am a huge visul and color person so i liked it
oh and i'm super glad i read the book again cuz i'm glad i got caught up on everything and could remember which lines of dialogue were straight from the book

"What baby?" .. totally got me everytime :))
I finished reading it recently. i wanted to be done with it before the movie came. It was my first reading and i liked the book. all the literary qualities aside , i thought the story itself was compelling.
Read some other reviews on goodreads for the book and i see that some people totally hate it. calling it "shallow , pointless, over-hyped" etc.
Could it be because it was made a compulsory read in high school?

Do I need a spoil..."
yes indeed. but the part that actually broke my heart was when Jay's father shows up for the funeral , alone , and shows the notebook with young jay's "Schedule" to nick.. and the old photo of the house he sent his father..
