I have to say I think this was a great chapter. One of the most entertaining and hilarious episodes in the book. I loved the fact that Gaskell took something that could be quite a serious event and made it into such a farce. I also think it was quite a relatable chapter, particularly when they are all sitting around sharing their own personal fears with each other. We all have our own little phobias, and fears some of which we might be reluctant to share with others.
I enjoyed this one too. I know I have a phobia which can be somewhat embarrassing at time. It was great to see the ladies scare themselves silly, and then be "brave" by scouting through the house with the household items to defend themselves. Also, enjoyed the fact that the ladies felt it was really silly of Mr. Hoggins to be robbed at his own door.
The dog dying was sad for me. I'm a bit sensitive when it comes to animals, but thought that Gaskell really did a great job capturing the grief of a lost pet.
I think my favorite line was Miss Pole's "my father was a man so I know the sex..." That made me giggle out loud. All and all a very fun read.

I'm enjoying so much this chapter. Obviosly Lady Glebmire was happier alone in the house, for what I've read Mrs. Jamieson wasnt the most interesting companion. And of course that poor dog couldnt have a long life eating cream and cake everyday!I read twice the "assasins" description of Miss Pole just to laugh again haha.
