message 2: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments I am reading "the inmortal life of henrietta lacks", and also "the forgotten garden"

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

suggestions?? I would like to read biographies/autobiographies of lives affected by the holocaust.

message 4: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments The Diary of Anne Frank is the one that comes to my mind. The others I know are works of fiction, though really good books too.

message 5: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (goodreadscomtracy_ashfield) | 1 comments Hi Annetta, If you're interested in reading about the holocaust, please consider reading The Secret Holocaust Diaries: The Untold Story of Nonna Bannister. I learned so much and was inspired by the courage of Nonna Bannister.

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

message 7: by Ane (new)

Ane Mulligan (anemulligan) How fun to find this group! I live in Suwanee and have a book club. Right now, I've been reading Sarah Addison Allen's Lost Lake. Great read!

message 8: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments Hello Anne! I read Garden Spells by that author last year, gave it 5 stars. Are you enjoying her book? I just finished reading (20 min.ago) The Light Between The Oceans. Loved it.

message 9: by Ane (new)

Ane Mulligan (anemulligan) I loved it. I've read all her books.

message 10: by William (new)

William Stuart (thegemstonechronicles) | 2 comments I am new to the group, so hello everyone! I am currently reading Blue Coyote Motel by Dianne Harmon! I just finished The Emerald of Phaunos by Scott Collins!

message 11: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments Hello William. It seems like this group is not active. Don't know if it ever was. I haven't been lucky at finding a book club nearby. I think that of all the libraries around us only the Lawrenceville library branch has an active reading club. I started reading a sample of The Invention Of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd and decided to order it from the library. While I waited I started reading The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley, a birthday gift. They both seem very engaging.

message 12: by Ane (new)

Ane Mulligan (anemulligan) We have a Christian book club that meets at Sugar Hill Church, if that would be of interest to you, Vera. We meet the 4th Monday of each month. We read either CHristian fiction or what we call family friendly fiction. This month we read Sarah Addison Allen's Lost Lake.

message 13: by William (new)

William Stuart (thegemstonechronicles) | 2 comments Hi Ane and Vera,

I did see that the group wasn't very active, but I still wanted to stop in and see what everyone was reading. Ane,I will think about the book club, but Mondays are normally very busy for me.

I look forward to seeing what each of you is reading!

message 14: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments Thank you, Ane! I live very close to that church. I could definitely stop by. I'll keep it in mind and make a note in my calendar. I am not huge on Christian books, I've only read one whose author and title I forgot (but didn't forget the story!). It was pretty good. I'll get you the name.
So, on the 4th you'll discuss Lost Lake? At what time?

message 15: by Ane (new)

Ane Mulligan (anemulligan) Right, and that's tomorrow night. 7:00 PM. Drive into the parking lot to the right of the chruch. It's by the offices. My cell numebr is 770-713-7295. You can always give me a call.

Next month, they're reading my book. :o) Chapel Springs Revival. It's pretty funny. You can check it out here on Goodreads, see if it interest you. We'd love to have you.

message 16: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments Thank you, that's very kind. I'll check your book out though I don't know if I'll make it (two books in queue already) but I'll definitely check it out.

message 17: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments Hi everyone!

Finished reading The Invention Of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. Enjoyed it very much. Also, I just finished reading I Am Livia, by Phyllis T. Smith. Set in Roman times and based on known characters. I didn't like it that much, though the theme was interesting.
At the moment I am back to reading something light and humorous, A Year In Provence by Peter Mayle.
Ane, how did it go at the book club meeting? I did finish reading Chapel Springs Revival, three weeks ago. It was fresh and funny! I was planning on attending today but had to cancel, unfortunately.
What's been chosen for next month?
-Vera

message 18: by Ane (new)

Ane Mulligan (anemulligan) Vera, it went great!! It was so much fun and I shared some things form the second book. I'm delighted you enjoyed Chapel Springs Revival. Next month, we're reading a momoir, Connected: From Godfather to God the Father, by J. Alden Hall (Jim Hall, Judy's husband). What a great book that is!!

message 19: by Ane (new)

Ane Mulligan (anemulligan) I'm reading The Wishing Tide, by Barbara Davis. She's a new author with 2 books out. I'm really enjoying it!

message 20: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments Excellent!

message 21: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments I'm reading: Wolf Hall, The Signature of All Things, and The Orphan Master's Son. Whichever one I'm reading depends where I am (car or home or walking).

Vera, I read Invention of Wings and Light Between Oceans last year too. Enjoyed them both. I've got Immortal Life on my bookshelf (read about 10 pages - very interesting).

I've read a couple of Sarah Addison Allen in the past - she's so creative.

message 22: by Ane (new)

Ane Mulligan (anemulligan) I love Sarah Addison Allen. I just got her newest book, but haven't had time to read it yet.

message 23: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments Glad you liked them, CMac G! I was given The Signature Of All Things this Christmas (from my wish list) but haven't started it yet.
At the moment I'm half way through a book called Nine Boys And A Boat. I am enjoying it, didn't expect to, but have been pleasantly surprised so far.
After reading A Year In Provence (which I loved) I finally finished Major Pettigrew's Last Stand by Helen Simonson (fictional English humor) The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley (a fictional work of reincarnation, love and mystery, set in Scotland) and Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger (same author of The Time Traveler's Wife, which is one my all time favorites) is about a ghost, a touristic cemetery, some humor, some drama, love, and the ever so intriguing life of identical twin sisters. Set in London. Liked them all.

--Vera

message 24: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments Thanks. I just heard someone else mention liking A Year in Provence so that's going to top of my list. So little time, so many great books!

message 25: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments My thoughts, exactly!
Let me know what you think of Wolf Hall, and The Orphan Master's Son.

message 26: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments My mid year check in. Did you get through Signature of All Things? I enjoyed Wolf Hall for the most part. It was a little frenetic in my view. Different point of view of the Boleyn sisters. After I finished and was doing my "synopsis", I found out it was a popular PBS type mini-series. I'd like to see it.
Glad I read The Orphan Master's Son but I think it is a bit overhyped and parts were plain bizarre. I know nothing about North Korea so it was interesting and included some subtle and not so subtle commentary on the American way of life. I've had some major duds this year (usually checked out audiobooks).

message 27: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments I enjoyed Girl on the Train and The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry. I have decided I like author Joshilyn Jackson (quirky Southern). Now I'm going to try and get through some things on my bookshelf - like finally finishing The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Happy Summer. Can't believe school is starting back up.

message 28: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments I'll have to check on Wolf Hall, sounds interesting.
I did finish Signature Of All Things, but I had mixed feelings about it. I wanted to like it very much because she's a favorite author of mine.
By contrast, The Japanese Lover by Isabel Allende was very entertaining. Her style and magic realism has never disappointed me. Even though this time I didn't like the main character - which has never been the case with her heroines- I still enjoyed the book.
Boys And A Boat was excellent. The kind of reading that stays with me for a while.

message 29: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments Completely understand about Signature of All Things. I'll check out The Japanese Lover and Boys and A Boat. I haven't heard of either so thanks for the tip!! Between now and 9/28, I'm trying to clear some of unread books on my shelf so I won't add them til after then. I set a goal of reading 3 of them and hope I can make it happen. 3 sounds ridiculous, I know!

message 30: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments Have you read Me Before You ? I just finished it for Book Club and enjoyed it.

message 31: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments I haven't read it but have it on my wish list. What's it about?

message 32: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments A quadriplegic. But that's not the whole story!

message 33: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments It will be next in my reading list after I finish The Fiery Cross from the Outlander series (I'm half way through with it)

message 34: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments Those Outlander books are addictive!!

message 35: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments My only complaint is that they are too long and sometimes it can get tedious with the extra details and descriptions...I find this one in particular hard to go past 53% :(

message 36: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments Ok. I finally finished The Fiery Cross. I'll give the Outlander series a break before I move on the last book. I read Me Before You. It was a fast read. Very controversial topic. After that I read All The Light We Cannot See by Doerr. Loved it. One of those books that stay with you long after...
I am currently reading a sample in my Kindle called The Marriage Of Opposites by Alice Hoffman. I think I'll buy it. I'm liking it so far. I've never read Alice Hoffman before.

message 37: by CMG (Mac) (last edited May 25, 2016 12:27PM) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments Agreed on Me Before You - very controversial. I liked All the Light We Cannot See - what a story! I'll wait to see what you think of The Marriage of Opposites. I think I read one of her books from Oprah Book Club days. I confuse her with Anne Tyler for some reason. Anne Tyler

message 38: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments I finished Marriage Of Opposites. I found that I liked the second half of the book much better than the first. I wasn't very impressed with Rachel (I still don't like her) Then, when I was at 53% the book was focusing mostly in one her sons who turned out to be Camille Pissarro (the impressionist painter) That was a pleasant surprise since I love to read about famous painters, specially those that overcame all kinds of rules and obstacles set by society. He, among with others, defined an epic era in art history. He was quite an idealist (show me a true artist that isn't)
It was a fast read. Historical fiction, my favorite genre.
I'll probably read The Dovekeeper also by Alice Hoffman. Her style is easy, flowing. Not as poetic as Anthony Doerr's ...but that's a hard one to match. He really is a great writer.
At the moment I'm reading a sample of The Rosie Project By Graeme Simsion. I think I'll end up buying it.
Vera

message 39: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments Thanks. I think I'll have to check out Marriage of Opposites.
I was very pleasantly surprised by The Rosie Project. (Downloaded audio from library because it was "available". ) It is funny and kind of silly. Reminds me of the TV show Big Bang Theory a bit. Not at all historical fiction though (one of my favorites too).
I will have to check to see if Doerr's written other things. I hadn't heard of him before All the Light.. . There are always books to add to my list. I wish I could read as many as I want to!!

message 40: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments Enjoyed "Three Wishes" Three Wishes. Another "available" in audio from library.
@Vera, since you've liked Husband's Secret and seem to like Rosie Project, you might enjoy. Light entertaining read in my view although some deeper topics (divorce, etc.). Three triplet girls in Australia in their mid - 30s.

message 41: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments I will check Three Wishes out. Thank you for the tip. I just finished reading The Time In Between (WWII in Spain. Espionage. The main character is a woman with a strong influencial role). Enjoyed it.

message 42: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments Thanks Vera. I'm behind -- I still need to read the Boys in the Boat! I put it on my list last August.

message 43: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments I read The Choice by Nicholas Sparks (interesting twist at the end, very fast read, though it got a bit too slow and redundant before the end) and now I am reading Three Wishes by Liane Moriarty, as you recommended. I'm half way through it and I'm enjoying it very much. Wished I had more time so I could get to it... She's fun to read. I like the way she can add humor even when the plot has drama.

message 44: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments Hi Vera. Haven't been on this page in months! I now own Boys in the Boat so I'll be reading that very soon. Like you say, wish I had more time! Still want to get to the Marriage of Opposites.
Currently, I'm reading another Liane Moriarty Big Little Lies for my neighborhood book club. Easy reading. (I'm not watching the show though.)

message 45: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments Hi mac! I read Big Little Lies. Loved it! She's so easy to read. (I didn't know there was a show)
I'm currently reading The Power of Now. Non fiction. It's taking me a long time to read. I sort of have to "digest" it before moving on to more pages lol
Before this one I read The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult. It's about WWII and the Holocaust and the present time. It moves back and forth in time. As always, with her books, there's a controversial plot. It was interesting.

message 46: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments I usually like Jodi Picoult. I'll check it out. I'll skip The Power of Now. :)!! Looking forward to reading Boys in the Boat.

message 47: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments I read Idaho and Mothering Sunday - both had good reviews. But I did not like either!

message 48: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments Haha good to know!

message 49: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments Finished The Boys in the Boat. So inspiring. I'm about to read Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult. It is a book club pick. Don't know anything about it but I'll let you know.

message 50: by CMG (Mac) (new)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments Finished Small Great Things. As you say, another of her book's with a controversial plot. Very uncomfortable thought provoking situation. I would recommend it though.
