Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments Glad you liked it 😊
I'm reading book 1 of a series by a napoletan author Elena Ferrante. I think it would translate to My Brilliant Friend. It's about two women's friendship. Set in Naples. Mid 20st century. I think I'm going to like it.
I had started reading The House at Riverton by Kate Morton but then I was given this one as a gift and paused the one I was reading first. Temporarily.

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments I haven't heard of My Brilliant Friend. Do you recommend it? Wish I had friends gifting me books!😀 After a slightly rough start, I loved A Man Called Ove. I guess I'm in summertime slow down - only reading a little and slowly but I'm searching for something good. I'm going to look through my to read list and this thread - I know there are dozens. I prefer when I can get a book from the library though.

Ane Mulligan (anemulligan) Do any of you like inspirational fiction with humor?

message 54: by Vera (new)

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments Hey Mac! I have A Man Called Ove in my wish list! Maybe I will be reading it next after the second series book by Elena Ferrante. At the moment I'm half way through The House Of Riverton.

Hi Ane, I do very much like humorous fiction. Not too much the inspirational kind, though.

Ane Mulligan (anemulligan) I understand. While mine isn't heavy handed (no sermons) my fiction is from a Christian worldview.

Hi. I read My Brilliant Friend. Interesting. I had a hard time keeping up with the characters names though. Their poverty and rough living made me feel very appreciative!

I read Blue Coyote Motel. It had great reviews but I feel like it was kind of self published and weak in spots. Potentially interesting plot concept but the writing was not my favorite. I'm sorry to say I felt I wasted money buying it. I hope you enjoyed it much more than me!

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments Vera, I think you might like Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. My sister recommended it to me.

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments Hi Mac, I was so busy I finally got a chance to read this post! I will try and read Before We Were Yours. I read the plot, it seems very heart wrenching but I do like that it seems to have a happy ending.
I finished two more books by Elena Ferrante (books 2 and 3 from My Brilliant Friend series) and now I'm 3/4 done reading In The Midst Of Winter, by Isabel Allende. So far I've liked it. I like her style.

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments Hi! Glad you're busy. I don't think I have it in me to stick with My Nrilliant Friend series. I liked Book One okay but it was work for me. Glad you're enjoying them...the reviews are great. I guess I'm in beach reading phase - nothing too substantial. Although I did like Lilac Girls and think you might as well. Take care!!

Vera (vbh75) | 32 comments i know what you mean, the Elena Ferrante series is different. I haven't started the last book. I needed a pause from it. After Isabel Allende I picked one that was given to me for Christmas, Girl on a Train. I read it on my week off it's an easy feat read. I'm reading another that was given to me as a present, one by Liane Moriarty: Truly Madly Guilty. It was super slow at first but it's finally getting somewhere. I've put on my kindle list Lilac Girls. You're right, I think it's the kind of book I'll like. :)

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments Agree with you about Girl on a Train. I also saw the movie-I did not like the movie though. I like to read Liane Moriarty - so that might be my next read!

Jaddie Dodd (jaddiedodd) | 2 comments I'm reading all of Karin Slaughter's books. She's my new favorite author. Before I found Karin, Don Winslow was my favorite.

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments @Jaddi I like Karin Slaughter especially all the Atlanta settings and references. Some are pretty gruesome with bad guys being really bad! I’m not reading anything special - just what library offers. My book club read “Where the crawdads sing” and I really liked it.

Jaddie Dodd (jaddiedodd) | 2 comments I read Crawdads, too. I found it depressing but well-written. The story reminds me of growing up in Buford.

I just finished Karin's Indelible. I'm going to listen to Adrian McKinty's The Chain when it becomes available on July 9. Don Winslow, one of my favorite writers, heartily recommends it.

CMG (Mac) | 40 comments That’s interesting that Crawdads reminds you of Buford - I only moved to the area in 2012 so it has changed a lot! I’ll check out the reviews for The Chain. Only a few more days until it comes out!
