Hillary Major | 436 comments & based on the ones I've read, the books in Max Gladstone's Craft series can each stand alone

Shaitarn War for the Oaks, an urban fantasy by Emma Bull
On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers (don't be put off by the film!)
And I would argue Taltos by Steven Brust can be read as a stand alone novel (it's actually book 4 of a series, but I started with that one).

I'll reply for Jessie and no, I wouldn't read it standalone, it's really one long 4 book story. I wouldn't really call it fantasy either, though there are dream sequences/visions (all that druid stuff) but there's no proof that it was magic versus smoking some interesting herbs. But if you still want to call it magic, it's a very minor part of the story and fantasy fans might be disappointed at the lack of it. It's a good historical series though.

Ysabel also by Guy Gavriel Kay are two that come to mind. Also makes me realise most fantasy I've read seems to be a part of a series.

Jon Lang (jongraylang) | 9 comments I apparently don't have much in the way of stand alone fantasy, most are part of a series.
Joe Abercrombie's Best Served Cold comes to mind.
I have also really enjoyed Guy Gavriel Kay's books.

While Best Served Cold (and The Heroes and Red Country for that matter) can be read as a stand alone, I would argue that they are far more enjoyable after having finished The First Law trilogy. It's in the same world, and it has a lot of recurring characters from that series.

Jon Lang (jongraylang) | 9 comments I had a hard time coming up with stand alone fantasy books in general. You're right about the First Laws Trilogy.

Andy | 130 comments The Golden Key is worth a read. It is a stand alone book but there has been talk of additional ones.
To Ride Hell's Chasm - Janny Wurts
Eyes of the Dragon - SK

Jon Lang (jongraylang) | 9 comments I'll look for it. Thanks

Luiz Small Gods by Terry Pratchett. It makes you laugh, it makes you feel and it makes you think.

Jon Lang (jongraylang) | 9 comments I have enjoyed quite a few Terry Pratchett books but I haven't come across this one.
