Just a FYI....My buddy read doesn't end until Sunday. I will then add my book to my shelf as I haven't finished it yet. We have a set of questions that will be posted tomorrow(well actually today as it is 2:30am Saturday) And then Sunday I write up and post the questions :) So sometime Sunday I will add A Discovery of Witches (All Souls Trilogy, #1) by Deborah Harkness to my shelf.

That's fine, I only put that in there so I don't put it anywhere else :) How are you getting on with ADoW? Are you enjoying it?

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments Oo, I love our dance, LOL!!

You rock woman! You pushed me to my reading edge and then some. I bow down to your awesomeness :-).

It helped me to also keep reading when I didn't feel like it, which helped out the Toppler I'm in and helped out with books here, so I think everyone benefitted from Oo titanical reading powers!!

I just finished Wave Wave by Sonali Deraniyagala . A heartbreaking read about a woman who survived the 2004 tsunami disaster but lost her husband, 2 sons and her mother and father in the disaster. This book will stay with me forever I think. It really has made me open my eyes to everything that holds a memory.

message 956: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments I did not kick butt in the Toppler. There are some real mean reading machines over there...they left me in their dust

Jonathan Strange is a wonderful fantasy book about 2 magicians trying to bring magic back to England. It's beautifully written, sort of in the Jane Austen writing vein. And yes it is also a mystery. I don't think there's another read like it - in a great way :-)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments I finished reading Johnathan Strange and Dr. Norell (800 pages) last week. What is the signifcance of a bouncing cupcake? I read the link, but I'm still confused. If it helps the team...

message 969: by ShoSho (new)

ShoSho (shoshost) | 446 comments I think you can have 2 books added instead of one for the chunksters ! but we have to wait until that thread is open. We already have 4 bouncing cupcakes!

message 970: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments ok...then I guess it's good if I claim one for Jonathan Strange when they come available?

message 985: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments Nope Claire, spinning and alcohol are never a good combination, ROFLOL! However it does lead to increasing the effects of inebriation!

message 990: by ✿Claire✿ (new)

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments So Robin, are you planning on reading the third one? :)

I thought it was quite good until near the end of the third book where they pretty much ruined it for me. I can understand why you didn't like it though from your review!

message 991: by ✿Claire✿ (new)

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments I've done a bit of reading over the last day or so but I was at a concert all day Saturday doing not much except getting a reminder about some of the silly little things people want first aid for. Some of the acts were good, some really not!

And Sunday was supposed to be packing but I was a bit jaded! Did fit in a trip to my new flat though :) Can't wait for the weekend when I move (although I really must finish the packing before then!)

From the weekend until I get my internet sorted, I'll be a bit limited on time on here although I am going to get something sorted short term. :)

Hey Claire - I'm interested as to why you didn't like the end of Mockingjay as I've heard that from others too... Was it because of the epilogue?
I liked the end (view spoiler)

No, I thought the epilogue (view spoiler) was great. I completely agree with you about those bits of the ending, (view spoiler) It's a bit like the ending of Torchwood Children of Earth, one action providing an unnecessary reason for the actions of the hero when they had enough provocation to do it anyway.

Yes completely agree with you on that. (view spoiler)
Love the Children of the Earth series (view spoiler)

message 995: by ✿Claire✿ (new)

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments I enjoyed Children of Earth (view spoiler) I still love the first two series but didn't watch much of Miracle Day and won't rewatch Children of Earth, even if there were some really good bits in it.
I know what you mean about Mockingjay, it is a bit or an odd moral message for YA, not exactly inspiring wherease the rest of the books are sort of about beating whatever life throws at you. The redundancy in her actions is a bit how I felt at the end of Skyfall as well!

It's amazing how one action can spoil a series or a book, even if that action's right at the end. I loved the Keys to the Kingdom series right up until the last chapter (might even have been the epilogue) and then the ending was rubbish and I was left feeling a bit cheated (especially as I'd spent several years waiting for all the installments to come out!)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16594 comments Mod
Yes agree about Torchwood. I hope Captain Jack makes another appearance in Dr Who someday!!

And that is the risk with reading and investing in a series isn't it.... Sometimes you end up wasting so much time and energy! I think the last series I read that was really good from start to finish was Harry Potter! I find so many trilogies at the moment suffer "second book syndrome"

message 997: by ✿Claire✿ (new)

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments With a Kindle, a lot of the books I read that are first in the series were free and I tend not to read the next one unless it really grabs me. Sometimes I don't because the first one was so good and I don't want the second one to ruin it!!

I think River Song and Captain Jack would be hilarious!!

message 998: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16594 comments Mod
Lol! I love that you don't want the second book to ruin it!! I'm also addicted to downloading free kindle books, but I never end up reading them! So I'm trying to be a bit more discerning about what I download :)

and. OH MY GOD - can you imagine?! River Song and Jack and Matt Smith! AH! Why don't they do that??!! This new series has been so disappointing. The writing has really let it down and I don't really care for Clara

message 999: by ✿Claire✿ (new)

✿Claire✿ (clairelm) | 1222 comments I prefer Clara to the Ponds, particularly towards the end. Even without Matt Smith, there should be a spin off with the pair of them. It would probably have to be aimed at adults though!!

I'm trying to limit what I download and challenging myself to work through as many as possible. I should get more read when my commute increases frmo next week :)

Oh no! Love the Ponds! But yes, the spin-off would be awesome and need to be shown after 8.30pm... lol
