ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments First, I *love* the idea of a Women's Suffrage category. Something like reading books by only female authors? Easy peasy. Could replace a category with that, maybe the 500 page one, just because chunksters can sometimes take awhile to read? Although, only needing 8 chunksters isn't too hard if a lot of people play along. Or maybe replace a spell it out? Anyway, I'm really pulling for a suffrage category, lol.

Secondly, I would prefer July challenge stuff be kept in a July thread because I just think it's easier to find things when they are categorized. edit: I see you already said you'd create new ones but I missed that on my first read-through here!

Thirdly, LOVE Sarah's "End of Summer" idea! Brilliant. 11 letters, perfect. So, it could be 8 categories of 8 required books (your original 64 idea), then the END OF SUMMER left-over to reach the 75 requirement!

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Oh, question about the Around the World in 80 Days -- would that be a "mini-challenge" for July 1 through September 19? In addition to the July Moon mini?

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Oh, Mary -- I keep forgetting to tell you my bookshelf name for this team is blueberry-muffin!

message 354: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I was thinking that now that we have to do 11 more books than I planned, that I would take out the Long Hot Summer 500+ books one.

I like the women author one and the End of Summer Spell out. I'll do some tweaking to come up with 75.

I decided that I liked having the mini-challenges separate too.

The Moon theme & Around the World theme were just ones for us. I thought about making the ARound the World thing our August one. But I'm worried that it might be too hard to get it done in 31 days especially if we have to get 75 books done. It's less pressure to make it a separate, just for fun challenge that people can do if they want as they have time.

And the Moon one is easy and gives us a break between the 7% and the August challenge.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Ok here's how I tweaked it. This is not final. I'm going to be busy over the summer and wanted to get it finalized and set up. Also so I can set up some stuff for July and not worry about wanting to use it for the August one. (yes I am an overthinker)

August is for (Book) Lovers Challenge

Need to hit 75.

1: Spell out Pewter Blue (10)
2: Spell out August (6)
3: 8th in a series, 8 words, 8 letters etc., (8)
4: 8 Green Covers for Peridot birth stone. (8)
5: Leo/Zodiac: books w/cover, plot, title, character etc.., Leo, sun, orange, red, fire, cats (big & small) (8)
6: Summer Fling: books under 300 pages (8)
7: 19th Amendment: books from female authors in honor of women in the US getting the vote on August 18, 1920. (8)
8: Water, Water Everywhere: books set near water, water in title, water on cover etc.., (8)
9: Spell Out: End Of Summer (11)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Well I submitted it to the mods to see if it meets with their approval. I hope it isn't too many spell-outs or too similar to the 7%. Since it's one we can earn bonus points for, but only if we finish in time, I wanted to make it something that wasn't too hard to finish. None of those categories will be hard to do.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Well, the August one is supposed to be "breezy" because it's summer, so hopefully it'll be accepted!

message 359: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments 75 books isn't all that Breezy when a lot of people might be going out of town, myself included. I might not have much internet access when I'm at my Dad's. I'll have to make August a Cozy month and catch up on my Phryne Fisher & Hamish Macbeth books.

message 360: by Mary X (last edited Jun 17, 2013 05:20PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Ok so they have sort of approved our challenge. We might have to replace a spell-out. So if anyone has an idea of what to put in place of a spell out-I'm all ears. I would probably replace the spell out of August, if we have to, as it's the shortest.

Some ideas: Hawaii became a state on 8/21/59 set in Hawaii.
Woodstock ran from 8/15-8/17 in 1969.-Music themed? published/set in 60's?
Mt. Vesuvius erupted Aug 24, 79 -books set in Italy or other famous Volcano location
Atlanta falls to Union forces-Sep 01, 1864-Civil War setting?
Geronimo Surrenders Sep 04, 1886 -Westerns?

message 361: by ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (last edited Jun 17, 2013 05:08PM) (new)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Well, which spell-it-out, since one is worth 10 books and the other is worth 6? Are we replacing 6 or 10? Well, I guess that depends on what we come up with as a substitute, duh. And is it because there are two spell-it-outs that we might have to replace one?

You have three "spell-it-outs."

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments I'll post my thoughts in the August challenge thread.

message 364: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Sorry I edited my post to add some ideas. I'll move them over to the August thread discussion too.

We're having conversations in two different places. ;)

In August teams are making their own challenges, we're discussing details over in this thread. Maybe for the future we should just post a link directing people to threads in the other group when we're discussing things there to make it a little less confusing for everyone?

Today's baked good, no sweets today!

message 368: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Those are so cute.

Yeah it gets confusing. I should have kept it in the August discussion thread but I wanted to make sure it was seen.

Anyway, we have time to decide.

message 369: by Riya (new)

Riya These all sound like great ideas- I like the Around the World thing going for a longer time; looks like fun! Women's Suffrage would also be interesting! We should look at important events in July and maybe try themes based on those-like holidays, political stuff, author's birthdays!

message 370: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Imke is going to run the Around the World challenge since it was her idea. I don't know when she'll put it up but I told her to run with it. She'll be creating a new thread in the Round II group under Pewter Blue's section.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Love those parrot fish, so pretty! Not sure what Mary was going to post today but I'm going to leave you all with some purple petunias. I have some just like this on my patio but apparently I forgot to take pictures and I don't feel like running outside to do so right now.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments I am spending a lot of time reading two books, but also watching the Harry Potter movies with my husband and son. And napping a lot because I keep waking up far too early. Now, it's time for dinner and more reading. I work super early tomorrow, blah.

Also, I'm in a GR funk so I may not be posting much for a few days. I don't know, we'll see. I'm reading for sure, but I'm trying not to sit at the computer for long for the next few days. Just need a break from the screen...

"Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was Oh no, not again. Many people have speculated that if we knew exactly why the bowl of petunias had thought that we would know a lot more about the nature of the Universe than we do now." - Douglas Adams
