Task #3 - Random Genre

I will randomly assigned the following twelve (12) genres to a corresponding number.
Contemporary Romance
Fantasy
Historical Fiction
Historical Romance
History
Horror
Mystery/Cozy
Mystery/Thriller
Non-Fiction
Urban Fantasy
Women's Fiction
Young Adult
Go to:
http://www.random.org/dice/
and roll one or two dice.

Come back to this thread and tell me the number you rolled and I'll tell you the genre a member (any member) of your Team needs to read this month.

I will reassign the genre before each Team request.

Yes, if a member has already read that genre, you may count it.

You may NOT use books used in other November tasks.

Any books 160 pages or greater, finished between November 1 - 23, 2013.

Classification will be by the top five most popular 'tags' - according to GRs members.

You will be granted one (1) BAP.

You have until the 23rd of November to earn this point. (Or the end of the TTRC, which looks like November 17th, according to the poll in the "sister" group.)

Until the next surprise.

Post finished task here.

message 1853: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Team Pewter Blue, for Task #3, your genre is Horror.

I don't read horror. Has anyone read a book that qualifies for horror since 11/1 that we didn't already use for a task?

message 1854: by Mary X (last edited Nov 11, 2013 12:06PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Figures. Brooke read a "horror" book but I used it for the FALL spell out. Still looking.

Found one! Marianne read: Deliverance which has horror as one of the genres listed. So going to submit that.

message 1855: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) I didn't know the Zuiker was horror. Just some murder mystery. I usually dont read horror, so glad you found one.

message 1856: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I don't read straight out "horror" either but I noticed that a lot of Urban Fantasy & Paranormal books get shelved as "horror".

message 1857: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments Also The Orphan Master's Son should count, period. It is just as horrific as any horror story because it is based on scary realities that exist in North Korea.

Task #4 - Random Bookcover (Color or Item)

This task like the Random Genre in that I will randomly assigned numbers to all seventeen (17) Teams, as I did with the 12 genres. However, each Team has a corresponding predominant color or item to find on the cover, for what your Team needs to search.
• This is an either/or challenge. You only have to read one book that qualifies for either the ITEM - or the COLOR of the Team you are assigned.

• For predominant color book, it needs to be the edition the Team Member actually read.

• However, if it is an item on the cover, then you may post the actual bookcover and the alternate one (different edition) in which you found the item .

• If you get your own Team number, I will roll/reassign again.

If you can't see the picture chart, refer to list under this spoiler: (view spoiler)
Go to:
http://www.random.org/dice/
and roll two or three dice.

Come back to this thread and tell me the number you rolled and I'll tell you the Team Item/Color a member (any member) of your Team needs to read this month.

I will reassign the Team/Color/Item before each Team request.

Yes, if a member has already read a bookcover that works, you may count it.

You may NOT use books used in other November tasks.

Any books 160 pages or greater, finished between November 1 - 23, 2013.

You will be granted two (2) BAPs.

You have until the 23rd of November to earn this point. (Or the end of the TTRC, which looks like November 17th, according to the poll in the "sister" group.)

Until the next surprise.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments (we rolled a 7).

Pewter Blue, for Task #4, you need to do:

Purple Mt's Majesty =
ITEM: Mountains; bird.
COLOR: Purple.

I don't have time to check books right. I will look soon though to see if we've already done this.

message 1860: by Mary X (last edited Nov 12, 2013 09:40AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments that link to a poll just brings me to the top of this page.

I guess the voting is done. I never saw a link for it until now and I looked before. It just occurred to me to check the polls section of the sister group. But I would have voted for the 17th anyway.

NBRC Book Ninja | 1025 comments Does it work now, Mary: HDLS? I left out the = sign.

message 1862: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Just a reminder to everyone that books need to be finished and shelved by early 11/17 for them to count for our final ranking. I've been doing all the tasks from the book Ninja to give us some points but there haven't been many of those and all the other teams are doing them too.

Not sure if we have any cupcakes left to redeem. I have been slacking on the November puzzles but can check that out today and see if I can get us anymore.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments I should be finished with at least 1 book by the 17th.

message 1867: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I haven't finished anything since Saturday night. But I have one I am finishing up today.

Just did the Parakeet word wheel but still need to email it.

message 1868: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments More than one person can do the word wheel, btw.

Captain Cupcake | 628 comments Mary: Harry Dresden's Love Slave wrote: "More than one person can do the word wheel, btw."

Yes, more than one person can work on the same puzzle and send it as one (team work :D).
And yes, more than one person can do the puzzle and send me solutions (alone), but you'll get only one set of cupcakes per team.

message 1870: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Ok just emailed the Parakeet word wheel. Hoping they don't ding me for using too man "obscure" words but I had to in order to keep them all starting with a P.

The all about us crossword is here: all about us. I printed it out to work on it but if anyone wants to take a look and message me answers, I will appreciate the help. I have not paid much attention to what's been going on in other teams.

message 1871: by Vicky (last edited Nov 13, 2013 08:58PM) (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Cupcake Update!

We will only be able to redeem another 45 cupcakes before the end of the challenge. We have more than enough 450 page/112.5k word books to fill all of these spots with bouncing cupcakes for +1 BAP.

HOWEVER, we have 16 Triple Threats (800+ pages or 200k words) and 4 Cutthroats (1400+ pages or 350k words) that would be more profitable to turn-in than the regular chunksters.

These are the Triple Threats and Cutthroats that we've already turned-in:

Cutthroats - 1,400 Pages or 350,000 Words
Holly(QC) Shantaram Roberts, Gregory David 944
Mary Atlas Shrugged Rand, Ayn 1,168
Mary 1Q84 Murakami, Haruki 925
Vicky A Breath of Snow and Ashes Gabaldon, Diana  980
Vicky The Wise Man's Fear Rothfuss, Patrick  994

Triple Threats - 800 Pages or 200,000 Words
Imke The Host  Meyer, Stephenie 619
Imke Discovery of Witches Harkness, Deborah  579
Imke 22-11-1963 King, Stephen 729
Imke Shadow of Night  Harkness, Deborah  592
Marianne The Host Meyere, Stephenie 619
Michael Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay Chabon, Michael 636
Riya The Once and Future King White, T.H. 639
Sarah A Fine Balance Mistry, Rohinton 603
Vicky The Name of the Wind Rothfuss, Patrick  662
Vicky Blood Song Ryan, Anthony 575

If you've read any of these and aren't on the list, let me know! If you read something that you think should qualify as one of these, also let me know so I can do some looking into it. Note that none of the books listed have a page count that qualifies it, but it does have the word count. If you think something looks big, it probably is! I'll do all the research to try and get it verified, but it will be a huge help if you give me a heads up.

Long Story Short
-We do not need anymore books for bouncing cupcakes (450+ pages/112.5k words).
-We could use books that are 800+ pages or 200,000 words for Triple Threats.
-We could use books that are 1,400+ pages or 350,000 words for Cutthroats.
-Books shorter than the page requirement are likely to work, if you think it's bigger than it seems, let me know and I will look into it!
-This is a no-pressure recap, feel free to continue reading whatever you like.

message 1872: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Vicky, would you like me to help you post some cupcake redemption? I know you had something come up last week. I would be glad to help, if you tell me with which member I should start.

message 1873: by Mary X (last edited Nov 13, 2013 06:28PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Hmm. I've been wanting to reread A Discovery of Witches and my library has the ebook and audio available. Unfortunately I am also in another team challenge and will have to read a book for that by Sunday but I don't know what the theme will be yet (it's picked tomorrow morning).

Maybe I'll pick it up at the library on my lunch break and cross my fingers that I can fit it into that other challenge.

message 1874: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I messed up the Parakeet word wheel puzzle and since we have more cupcakes than we can turn in anyway, I am not going to worry about it anymore and just try to get in either a triple threat or maybe I'll just focus on some short books. Not sure if I could get the triple threat done in time for Vicky to redeem it for us. I think I'm out of short audiobooks at the moment.

I will take care of any chances for points from the Ninja though as soon as I see them.

Thanks for the offer, LK. I've been through everyone's books and have a pretty extensive list of books that count for chunksters, so I think we'll be good. My issue last week was that I really didn't have the computer time to turn that list into posts. I'm good for this week though!

message 1878: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments So how do I figure out how many words are in a book? I can't use Discovery of Witches for this other team challenge I am doing. But I can use The Black Prism which has more pages than DOW. I have it on audio but if it's printed like a print version of another books of his I own in print, then it's a lot of words on each page.

I know there was a list of books approved for different levels somewhere.

message 1879: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Mary: HDLS, using Script Timer, I would guess-ta-mate The Black Prism to be about 238,700 words, which is about 954.8 pages, if you go by TTRC standard of 250 words per page. However, narration speeds vary, so you might want to listen to a sample, first.

Our list of approved books is here, although, Countess Paige has not be able to update it this week... I don't believe.

message 1880: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'm not worried about narration speed. I can finish it in time and it's one where I can even change the speed. I already own the audiobooks. I just would read something shorter if doesn't count for a triple threat and save this one for later. But it sounds like it does count. I tried a couple of the sites linked in the page count thread but I don't want to sign up for an account somewhere just to check 1 book. Amazon has nothing.

Task #5 - Novella/Short Story

There are less than seventy-four hours until the last Sunday Update!

For Task #5, I will give you a different kind of mission. One that could create quite a quandary, but will bring a large reward: Five (5) BAPs!
◆ Reading novellas or short stories, spell out:
N.
B.
R.
C.

N.
I.
N.
J.
A.
• The twist is you may NOT apply a book larger than 160 pages, and thus they may NOT be “tagged” towards your TTRC.

• EXCEPTION: They may be in an anthology; this is the only way you may “tag” the completed book, if you do finish the whole book. However, you are NOT required to read the whole book if you use an anthology. Nevertheless, you must use the titles, etc., of the stories within the anthology to do the spelling.

• Short stories must be greater than 10 pages. (view spoiler)

• The same rules as prior Spell-It-Outs apply. (view spoiler)

• They may all be done by one Team Member, or all nine read by different Team Members, it matters not to me.

• Yes, if a short story or novella has been read/finished on November 1st or after, you may apply it.

• You have until Sunday, November 17th, 9:00 a.m. - or your time zone to finish/post Task #5.
Decisions, decisions.

WHATEVER will you do?!!

Until the next surprise.

Post finished task here.

I will go by the honor system, if it is only on-line. You'll need to provide a hyperlink that clearly goes to the story... not have me search the website.
