Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Hmm. She had said in our team thread about this that books started ahead of time would be allowed. But that she hoped no teams would intentionally do a bunch pre-reading in order to get a head start. Hopefully she won't change her opinion on that. I had only planned on listening to a little bit of Anansi Boys early just to make sure I like it enough to read it for this.

This challenge actually starts on the best possible day for me. On Fridays I am alone at work for a good 5 hours. I usually listen to an audiobook while I file, vacuum and stuff like that. Then I'm off on Sat & Sun. Right now I have no social obligations planned at all for that weekend. (how sad is that?)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments And some stat updates.

We are hanging on to 4th by a thin thread. Wild Blue Yonder is only 11 books behind house when factoring in BAPS. We are 102 books behind Leather Jacket Black.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Just an FYI: in the main discussion thread for the October challenge, people are requesting that books not count for the book hunt if started before the RAT starts. That they only count for the pages read part.

So I would suggest that no one start anything until there's been an official ruling.

I know that as a team we are not planning to get it half done before it even officially starts.

message 1654: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) I'm glad I saw all that. I agree it shouldn't be started before hand for the RAT and if we are using the same books for both, then definitely not starting already is good. I was going to start mine tonight, so whew. :D I'll find something else.

I'm going to hit my new Patterson first, when we are able. Those are always really quick reads, even at 400 pages. Hopefully I'll finish it on the 4th (my anniversary!).

Sarah | 3273 comments I do want to point out that I already asked this question and was told we could start our books early, by the moderator. I don't see why if we read big books we couldn't start early as long as we still left a good amount of pages like to still qualify for a full book. I understand to read ahead and only leave a few pages for the challenge would be unfair. It would be nice to know. I might have to change my strategy again. This is getting frustrating. All my books tend to be bigger. The Cuckoo's Calling I could read quickly but it didn't fit in the challenge anywhere. I was planning on finishing up some books that worked for the challenge that two of which are dense reads and still have like 250 plus pages. I just want to know so I can plan. Hopefully an answer soon.

message 1656: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments And it doesn't matter if books are started before the RAT challenge - those rules were already made clear - you can start a book before that challenge, but can only count pages u actually read during the challenge.

message 1657: by Mary X (last edited Sep 30, 2013 06:04AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Yeah it's only for Book Hunt books that there's a debate.

I'm ok with holding off starting books for the book hunt until the 4th, personally. I was only going to see if I liked Anansi Boys enough to get through quickly.

My only concern with them picking certain days that tasks can be turned is that what if that final task submission time is really bad for us. Like right now I'm at work and I can come online at work. But I get interrupted a lot and sometimes it takes me several minutes to write a post. If the final task can't be turned in before, let's say, 11 am (my time) on the 12th-I might not be able to get ours submitted in a timely fashion. We might lose simply because I couldn't submit it the night before or before I went to work.

Conversely, if it falls on 6am (in my time zone) on a Saturday, I might have an advantage to others EST captains, because I am an early bird and have no problem getting up just before 6 to submit.

There's no really perfect time zone that would fit everyone. Less important when starting but more important when finishing.

message 1658: by Mary X (last edited Sep 30, 2013 06:41AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Well my main concern has been answered: the tasks do not have to be submitted by just me or Vicky. Any of the players on our team can submit, not just the captains. So if the final task submission falls at a really bad time for Vicky & myself, someone else can volunteer to submit. So now we just wait and see what day & time is picked for that.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I started #158 the word-wheel. I think today is the last day to do it and I never saw it up before.

Anyway, I got some but having issues with others. I made a spreadsheet and if anyone wants to help, I can message the link.

message 1660: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Finished and submitted #158. I hope I did it right. I caught a couple where I had used s twice and swapped the words out. Hopefully I didn't miss another mistake.

Actually, you only get one "chunkster" - but you may earn as many "blinkies" on that one as you have Team Members, if everyone turns one in.

message 1671: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments So does that mean since I was the first to turn it in that the chunkster one is attached to me or can it be used for a book read by anyone on the team?

Okay, made a whole new ticker, let's see...

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Okay, team, let's conjure up some reading for this read-a-thon!

message 1675: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments OK - I am reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier all day and some from The Cuckoo's Calling (Cormoran Strike, #1) by Robert Galbraith

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments I've almost reached my 60 book goal. Guess i'll be upping my goal soon. Originally, I think it was 52. I'm reading a lot more this year than I'd planned and that makes me quite happy. I hope I can keep this up next year and possibly add even more books to my tally.

message 1677: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Good for you Teresa. And good for us since we get to count your books.

Chunksters are team-wide. Only blinkies are per person.

message 1679: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Well guys we dropped down a spot to 5th place. Hopefully we can retake 4th next week.

I am going to message a couple of players that haven't marked a book read in a while. At this point in the challenge I'm wondering if it's worth trying to get a replacement if someone says they aren't participating anymore. But I haven't been paying attention to how often people are signing up anymore.

message 1680: by Riya (new)

Riya I think there's no harm in trying to get a replacement? There are probably still a few people signing up? I think.

Imke (immie75) | 1644 comments I've sent puzzle#162 to captain Cupcake.

message 1682: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Hey ladies ~

My internet is out. My internet company has an outage and they don't know when it will come back. I came out to the library to get some things done. I'll be updating my reads here in a few minutes, a lot of time to read yesterday! Hopefully it won't be out for too long!!

message 1683: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Heading out. Gotta go to the Post Office then gonna head back home.

If the internet isn't back in a day or two, I'll probably come back to update again, but hopefully it'll come back soon! I'll be reading in the mean time. If it helps out to raise my RAT goal, go ahead and raise it to 3000 I guess. If it's better to stay where it is but I go over, that's fine as well. I'll definitely finish the one I am on today (the Maggie Shayne) and will start something else, I don't even have anything lined up yet. :)

message 1684: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments No worries Brooke. Just update when you can. It's actually easier for me to keep track of the pages when people do one big update daily or every other day.

The goal doesn't really affect our score in anyway. It's more your pages read as compared to your book goal for round II.

Hey guys we are a 797 books! Let's see how far past 800 we can get by the next update.

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Just did Puzzles 168-171, so we are caught up!

Working on a big Cupcake Update right now, we have lots of cupcakes to use which should help bump us up a bit. :)

message 1692: by Riya (new)

Riya Sounds awesome Vicky!!! I got a bit behind on my reading this week due to my varsity tennis team having subsectionals and sectionals (and we've now qualified for team state!). But this weekend I have Monday off of school, so I should get a few books done by then :)

message 1693: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Do we need anymore longer books read? I'm reading 1 that's over 600 pages and another that's over 500. I'll make them a priority if we need more.

message 1694: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments Mary - I think I need to change my RaT pages to like maybe 1400. I have been having to work more shifts lately and will not be able to get 2000. I have a lot less time to read next week than I thought I was gonna have.

message 1695: by Vicky (last edited Oct 12, 2013 09:35AM) (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Mary: Harry Dresden's Love Slave wrote: "Do we need anymore longer books read? I'm reading 1 that's over 600 pages and another that's over 500. I'll make them a priority if we need more."

I was just coming to post about this. :)

We have plenty of books to redeem for (112,500 Words/450 Pages). We have earned 91 and we have that covered plus another 50 or so.

We could use (200,000 Words/800 Pages) and (350,000 Words/1,400 Pages) books, though.

We have earned 18 and we can cover 8. We have earned 6 and we can cover 4. We have one book that I'm trying to prove is a Cutthroat by word count, but I'm having trouble locating something official (Calibre tells me it's close to 400k words, but it only has 944 pages and they aren't taking Calibre as a reliable source), so I will probably submit it as a Triple Threat.

If available, the mods go by the word count first. If they can't find a word count, they go by the number of pages. We have Cutthroat books that only have 925 pages and Triple Threats with 575 pages because their word counts qualify. So it's worth looking into even if it doesn't meet the page count requirements.

Nobody needs to feel pressured to read big books though. We end up with 3 points for a (1 for the book and 2 BAP) and 5 points for a (1 for the book and 4 BAP). If you can read 3 or 5 regular books in the time it would take you to read one book that counts as a or , we still end up with the same number of books in the end.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Just popping in to say hello everyone! Have a great weekend.

message 1697: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I don't have any Cutthroat books on hand or that I am dying to read right now. So I think I will just opt for reading more shorter ones. I just figured I'd ask in case we had surplus cupcakes for our 400-800 pagers.

We passed 800 books by the way. We're at 808. Don't know if it's enough to get us back up to 4th place. We're closing in on the home stretch of this challenge though.

message 1698: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments We have one player who hasn't had any goodreads activity since 9/4 and hasn't responded to my messages. I've asked about getting a replacement. Don't know if that will happen or not at this point. But we'll see. I don't think we'll lose her books if we don't get a replacement.

message 1699: by Riya (new)

Riya I was looking at teh sign up page, and people are definitely still signing up for the challenge.

message 1700: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments So maybe we'll get lucky and get someone who has already read a bunch of books.

I hate to replace someone but she hasn't responded to 2 messages now and no activity on goodreads at all for over a month.
