message 1352: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments I just did puzzle #108 and #109.

#109 is a Blinking Cupcake which means that the more people on our team who complete the puzzle, the more options we will have when it comes time to cash them in. We can't work on it together, but feel free to do it. :D

message 1353: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Hmm. I did 109 but I'm not sure it's right. I couldn't find words to work with the definitions provided exactly. But I got from Flute to Cello in the correct number of steps. Not sure if I should submit it or not. At least they don't look right for the definition for me but I can't come up with any other words that fit.

message 1354: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Thanks for saying that more people could do it, Vicky. I sent in 109.

message 1355: by Mary X (last edited Aug 12, 2013 07:05PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I just submitted mine for 109 too. I hope it's right.

message 1356: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments 109 is wrong. I have all the words but the first one. It can only be two words and neither of them exist in the dictionary. I want to know what I am doing wrong.

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Sarah wrote: "109 is wrong. I have all the words but the first one. It can only be two words and neither of them exist in the dictionary. I want to know what I am doing wrong."

It's a weird word but it's definitely in the dictionary, I just checked on dictionary.com. The Merriam-Webster site won't let you see the definition unless you sign up for the free trial.

If you want to PM me what you have I can tell you if you're on the right track. :)

message 1358: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments I PM'd you Vicky. Maybe I need a new dictionary or I am doing something wrong. OK I found it in your dictionary. This is the first puzzle I have tried. Now I will try and send in my answers.

message 1360: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I am a bit confused. I do all of the puzzles but don't send them in since others get there first. I would, though, love to see the answers. Is there some place where a member can see the answers?

message 1361: by Mary X (last edited Aug 13, 2013 05:32AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I thought some of the words looked off when I did 109 too but I was right. One word even got flagged as being spelled wrong in the email I sent to the mods. So you are probably correct.

I think you can only see the answers to the picture sliding &jigsaw puzzle ones. Because they leave them up the whole challenge & so the answers can't be shown.

Nancy, it doesn't matter if somebody already solved puzzle before you, you can still send me your solution. Then you'll know if you are correct or not. ☺

message 1363: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Thanks for the answer Captain Cupcake. In the future I will send my answers.

In some puzzles, like doublets, all correct answers get credit. If you are not sure which one, look for this in blue line in my spreadsheet. ☺

August Cupcake Spreadsheet.

Also, for previous month's Cupcake Spreadsheet, they are posted in the first link of the Mini Non-Reading Games & Puzzles for Cupcakes - AUGUST - from Captain Cupcake & LK thread.

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Just want to give everyone a heads up that we are discussing the September Mod Challenge here.

The number of books we need to read for the challenge is based on how many of us participate. Participation is 100% optional, so don't feel obligated to join. If you do want to join though, I'm asking you to check-in in this thread which will double as our finished books thread when September starts.

To clarify the links...

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments On a personal note. My Mom is hosting her yearly crab feast this weekend. It's all hands on deck to clean up the house and prep food for it. My fiancee is also flying in for it and the following weekend I'm driving him back to Canada and staying there for a week for his cousin's wedding.

Needless to say, it's going to be a busy few weeks for me. I'll still be reading and checking in, but it will likely more be sporadic than usual!

message 1374: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Have fun, Vicky. It all sounds wonderful to me.

We are off to Boston for the weekend to spend time with old friends. We have tickets to see an exhibit of Faberge Eggs at one of the museums.

message 1375: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I just finished The White Queen but the weirdest thing happened. When I went to put this in, the book came up that I read this in October 2011. There is also a note that I listened to this as I was packing for our move mid November. I do remember the beginning when Elizabeth is waiting for the King on the road but little else. And I have no knowledge of reading this according to my list of books read in 2011 or in my book journal. Oh well, I guess I am losing it since at one time I remembered every book I read.

Andrea (deja05) | 732 comments Are rereads allowed for this challenge? If so, you might be able to claim it.

Rereads are allowed for this challenge, as long as it has been six months since you last read it.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Andrea wrote: "Are rereads allowed for this challenge? If so, you might be able to claim it."

Yes, Andrea, I read this book originally in 2011 when we were packing to move to our present home. I have a note that I listened to this book and perhaps with the move and my mind elsewhere, I didn't remember reading it. But I see on my trusted index cards for that year that I also read The Red Queen and have no knowledge of that either. Generally speaking I do remember when I've read a book but you know I may be having some senior moments and I earned them. LOL

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Raced through Harlan Coben's second Mickey Bolitar book,Seconds Away yesterday. It was one of those "I don't know what to do days" and just right for a quick read.

For those of you not familiar with Harlan Coben he writes a series featuring a lawyer, sports agent and part time detective named Myron Bolitar. Mickey Bolitar is Myron's nephew and as funny and witty as his uncle. Coben also writes some pretty convoluted novels which I really have enjoyed in the past. Think Nelson DeMille and Andy Rosenfelt if you want to try Coben. One last point of information, Coben and Dan Brown were friends in college - I think Amherst.

Oooh, thanks for letting me know!

While I'm here, I was coming to post that I'm in another reading/Goodreads slump. Work has just been really hectic and I haven't much felt like sitting at the computer even to make any quick posts, nor have I been reading much more than a few chapters of one book a day, if that. I'm sure it'll pass soon!

message 1384: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I am going out for the day so I just did the Sunday update. We are up to 593 books. The tracker is still behind but hopefully it'll catch up by the time the mods do the update.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) We spent the weekend in the Boston area visiting with old friends. We were in Salem at the Peabody Essex Museum and also visited three homes which dated back to the 17 and 1800's. While we traveled to and from Mass. I began The Lavender Garden and book:The Life List|16127237]. I hope to finish them this weekend since I have so many here from the library to read I'm like the old woman in the shoe. Off to play tennis, then lunch with friends from my charity organization to do some planning and then to the libraries.

Whodunnit? Murder in Mystery Manor by Anthony E. Zuiker One By One (Robert Hunter Series #5) by Chris Carter

Sarah | 3273 comments So I will talk to myself and update myself about our teams progress since I am alone competing against all these teams. I don't stand a chance - but I am going to start The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, #1) by Stephen King today. I am reading Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie - this is not a quick read. Very very well written but very dense. Not a quick read - it takes awhile to get through the pages. I love it. Hopefully I can finish The Light in the Ruins by Chris Bohjalian by Sunday. These are my reads for the rest of the month - oh and gotta get to A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry before the month is through. That is all I got.

Sarah | 3273 comments I worked the last few days - absolutely exhausting. I am an RN in the ER at the big hospital here in Portland and we have been understaffed with our nurses and extremely busy. Quite frankly it is scary conditions to be working under. Today is laundry day, so hopefully I can read in between washing loads is laundry. My dryer is broke - so then I gotta haul it all to the laundromat to dry. Which is cool because I can dry all the laundry at once, but which is not cool because then I have a mountain of clothes to fold.

message 1394: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Aww... Sarah! May I ask, why A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry ? I hear it is beautifully written, though sad. Do you need it for a book club or challenge?

Maybe add How to Do Nothing with Nobody All Alone by Yourself by Robert Paul Smith ?

And read it here:

With a cup of tea:

Maybe add A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry and while it is sad there is also something wonderful about the characters and the storyline.

I really enjoy Indian authors and would highly recommend Chitra Bennerjee Divakaruni, Thrity Umrigar and Jhumpa Lahiri.

No need to sent a rescue team. I'm still here. I've been really tired the last few days and not very active on GR. At the moment I'm reading Artemis Fowl (Artemis Fowl, #1) by Eoin Colfer and I'm going to start Gameboard of the Gods (Age of X, #1) by Richelle Mead in 2 days (BOM)

message 1398: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I am currently reading The Lavender Garden by Lucinda Riley for a challenge, The Life List by Lori Neilson Spielman and listening to Island Girlsby Nancy Thayer. So far I am enjoying all 3 books.

But my big news is I am going to see the show Pippin on Broadway tomorrow. I am calling this an end of summer treat to myself.

Captain Cupcake | 628 comments
More encryption puzzles are coming from this Captain of Pain.
You might need some help, or a bit of Novocain.

If you need a hint, for any quote or spell,
what letter you desire, be sure to tell.

Redeem a “Blinkie” cupcake you have earned.
Choose wisely, to help you decipher and discern.

Will it take only one, two, or three?
To set you on the right path, it’s such a small fee.

We don’t want those cupcakes to go to waste.
Consider logically where the “t” could be placed.

Or maybe you’ll want an altogether different choice.
It’s important, as there are no hints that have voice.

For the clue to be helpful, Captain Cupcake must know,
to reveal from the alphabet what you want him to show.

With each submission, be sure to make clear,
which letter from this Captain you want to hear!

See, we don’t want your cupcakes going to waste.
So tell us the letter for which you’d like a taste.

It’s almost like magic: a “Blinkie” for a hint,
to earn a “bouncing” or “Triple Threat.”
That’s a “Blinkie” well spent!
