Sarah | 3273 comments I will be branching out for me with reading Divergent - this is a new genre for me.

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments All our BOM's discussions have the same format. We do a chapter breakdown and a set of comments and questions for each day.

We used to only do that format to buddy reads, but since we try to get the group as diverse as possible to our members we opt for using 3 different "visions" the standard one, the relaxed with fewer reading days (and fewer questions) and the informal with no reading plan or questions although we prefer to add some comments. This one we are still testing it to see if we get more conversation that "I like the book", "It has a good storyline" over and over the thread.

As for the nominations. Well, we have 4000 members. Some like prize winners, some like classics, some prefer the hype, or some prefer what I call "commercial" books - a bit like movies, the ones who make you think and the ones who only entertain.

So, we can just nominate and hope that it wins.

However, if you really like to read a book, like Orphan Master's Son, and it does keeping getting lower scores, you can ask for it on the read it with me challenge thread.

Since you are still not comfortable leading the discussion, if you find 2 members that wanted to read it, I can set a thread and lead the discussion. The reason because I'm setting the 3 members minimum is because, as you saw on my takeover choice, I'm a more "commercial" reader, so only you and me discussing it wouldn't be that fun for either of us. I also discovered with the BOM's that I fin easier to discuss the books that aren't exactly my cup of tea, and have read some great books that I wouldn't pick it up other way.

If you convince Nancy to read The Orphan Master's Son, I can set a thread for it. Just let me know because September is getting a bit full, and I have some plans for October that restrict a bit my reading options.

Sarah | 3273 comments I see you saw my comment on the MOD take over choosing Kookookachoo. . I may actually join in, it was also nominated as October's BOTM in my other reading group. I understand everyone has different tastes. I just like sharing my opinion. And I love the way the BOTM reads are set up. I didn't realize it was the standard until after my rant today.

I knew I could set up a buddy read and it is so generous of you to offer to lead a discussion but I will read the book at some point and I also have too many other reads on my plate right now to keep me quite busy. My plan was to be patient and wait and see what happens or set up a buddy read at some point in one of my groups if people show interest at some point. So thank you - that was a very kind offer. But no worries. I literally have so much on my plate anyway for like the rest of the year. I may squeeze this book in in December.

Sarah | 3273 comments OK. Goodnight y'all. I gotta get up in like five hours and work a crazy twelve hour shift in the emergency department at OHSU, but of course then I get five days off. I heard my hospital of employment was in one of the books in the Fifty Shades series. Anyway so much for starting Dark Places tonight. I have been too busy playing on Goodreads.
Zzzzzzzz...

GoodNight Sarah.

I'll see you on Dark Places discussion later.

message 1206: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I hear you Sarah. I must admit that I find my f2f book group discussions more intense perhaps because my groups are comprised of members who have been together for a long time. And members take pains and time to come up with interesting and well thought out questions. But again I think it takes a certain book to be discussed which makes a great deal of a difference.

I must admit that while I can come up with a top 10 read list for each year and have been doing this for over 25 years, I could never break this down to a couple of books. As I try to do this I remember another title and another title and another title. I've given up trying and now just enjoy a title for that year.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments It makes me happy to see this thread so chatty.

I should finish Warrior by Zoe Archer today. It's an expiring lend so I started having my Kindle read it to me yesterday instead of using an audiobook.

I never really participate in the BOM reads in any of my groups. They always seem to be either books I read already but too long ago to really discuss much, or it's part of a series that I'm not ready to read yet. Also my book buying budget is super low and often I can't get it from the library in time.

message 1208: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Just saw the message about The Orphan Master's Son (I don't always realize that the page has changed) and would be willing to read it in September if that works for others.

message 1209: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Sarah said she is a bit busy book wise now, but anytime you all see as fit, just let me know and I'll set the discussion up.

I should warn you that English is not my first language, so, sometimes my English grammar is not "by the rules" and as a former teacher, that could be annoying to you. I used to be a math tutor and I know the itch I get when I see bad logical thinking, so I understand the feeling.

We can also try a beta testing with this buddy read, if both Sarah and you are willing: the person doing the day's DQ's instead of a a complete set does around 3 - 4 (for example) and the ones answering to them add one (or two) of their own. I think that could be an interesting idea.

message 1210: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments I'd be interested in doing a BR for the Orphan Master's Son as well, right now I'm open to whenever is convenient for others. I'm in no rush!

I like the idea of shorter DQs and other readers adding to them as they answer. It will be interesting to get questions from different people as everyone sees something different when they read!

message 1211: by Sonia (last edited Aug 02, 2013 06:21AM) (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Cool.

Let's wait for Sarah to be back from her 12 hour shift to see if she want to think about a BR for late October, early November. I know she said December buuuuuuut, there is never too soon to fit a good book discussion.

message 1212: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) The later the better for me since my book dance card is really full at the moment. Besides book reads for Goodreads, I am also in two f2f book groups which start up again in September.

Where are you from?

I like the idea of the three or four and perhaps adding a couple also.

Sunny land, warm (but not hot) weather. I love it here!

:o)

message 1216: by Riya (new)

Riya Sarah, you have to tell me what you think of Divergent!!! It's a fantastic book in my opinion, so I'd love to hear how you feel about it!
And sorry about your dog Mary :(
Well, I'm finally back from tennis camp! It was okay, but I got SO behind on my reading, I definitely plan on spending the next week just getting tons of books finished up!

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Thank you Imke.

While I'm thinking of it. I will be gone most of the day tomorrow. We are going to a sunflower maze. I'm sure I'll be on in the a.m. before we go and then again at night.

message 1219: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I just finished Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks by Nicholas Sparks. I gave it a C rating and it was 340 pages. I noted this on my home page but wanted topost it here as well.

BTW - this book can count for the August challenge for Water, Water, Everywhere since it took place near a beach in North carolina.

message 1220: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Great I will add it. Thanks Nancy.

message 1221: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I am now going to try and read a really dynamite book next. I had such high hopes for both Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks and Elegy for Eddie (Maisie Dobbs #9) by Jacqueline Winspear but they both fizzled towards the end.

I am currently at the library and am bringing lots of things home - both books and audios and I am also going to really get into The Lemon Orchard by Luanne Rice . Only read a few pages of this book by Luanne Rice - the beginning is gut wrenching sad.

message 1222: by Vicky (last edited Aug 02, 2013 02:36PM) (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Hey everyone, Captain Cupcake has put up the first Triple Threat Cupcake Puzzle. The puzzle is a Word Wheel which is basically a game of Boggle where we have to create words from the letters in the wheel and each word has to contain the letter in the center of the wheel.

We have to find 41 words and some words have crossword type clues to guide us in the right direction, so I thought it would be something fun to work on as a team. Once we get all the words I will e-mail it in for credit.

No answers can go in this thread, or any of our other threads, because it would be too easy for other teams to steal our answers. So I created a spreadsheet that anyone with the link can edit. If you are interested in helping with the puzzle let me know and I'll PM you the link! :) And don't feel obligated to do so, this is totally optional!

By the way - the Triple Threat Cupcake will let us count a Chunkster of 900+ pages as 3 books, this is a companion to the bouncing cupcake that lets us count a 450+ page book as 2 books. Right now we have 4 900+ page books that we've read as a team, but we have no idea how many of these cupcakes will be up for grabs so I can't say whether we should try to read more or not. I would say that if you have a 900+ page book you really want to read, go for it, but don't feel like you have to plan on reading one.

Imke (immie75) | 1644 comments Hey Vicky I'll help with #103. I'm not sure how much help I'll be, English is not my first lanuage, but I think it's great practice to do these word puzzles.

Maybe I'm going to read some 900+ books in the near future, not this month though.

message 1224: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments I sent you the link Imke, any help is help!

message 1225: by Mary X (new)

You're welcome, I like doing those puzzles.

That sunflower maze sounds like fun. I'm thinking about going to a bookfair on sunday. This bookfair is the largest in The Netherlands and they organize a lot of extra activities during the fair, like expositions.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments We go to corn mazes every year but this is the first time I've heard of a sunflower maze. So I'm excited to see that because I love sunflowers.

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Thanks to whoever is catching the fact that I'm terrible at adding words that don't have an M in them, lol. ;)

message 1229: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Vicky ~ feel free to message me the link and I'll try. I tried both puzzles but the pages just kept giving me errors and wouldn't load, then they ended up being done for our team (yay to those who did it). I'll try my hand at the M one if you want.

message 1230: by Vicky (last edited Aug 02, 2013 03:52PM) (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments We only have one left and I'm waiting for Captain Cupcake to let me know if there is an error in the puzzle or if we just aren't coming up with the right word.

The spreadsheet worked well though, so I'll keep adding pages to the same link for future Word Wheels (and any other unscrambles/crossword puzzles with lots of clues) and we can team work them out.

Since the link will stay the same, let me know if you want it for future puzzles and I'll send it to you. I'll post here when I create sheets for future puzzles!

Thanks to everyone who pitched in. :)

message 1231: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments The spreadsheet was awesome. I still can't come up with that one that's open but I see someone came up with something for the other one that was hard.

message 1232: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments OK on a quick break. So busy today at work, three more hours and am home. Saw posts about BR for Orphan Masters Son - no one is doing this without me. This is great to have so much support from my group, I have really wanted to read this. But work out dates later. what else, we will talk later - gotta go- break over- I feel like this is a stealth mission.
Peace out.

message 1233: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments This team is awesome. We are at 497 books and already have 11 out of our 75 August books done!

message 1234: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Vicky - did you ever get an answer about the word we talked about. I sure am curious.

Might as well go ahead and plan on doing this twice! :) 11 in two days? We'll be done by mid-month. :D After my first, I'm focusing on the shorter reads I have set aside and I'm 20% through my next book. If I don't finish it tonight, it'll definitely be in the morning. :)

message 1236: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Nancy wrote: "Vicky - did you ever get an answer about the word we talked about. I sure am curious."

Not yet, I'll let everyone know when I hear. :)

message 1237: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I have been obsessing about that word for hours.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Send me the link to the spreadsheet, I'll help out with any games I'm able to. I was going to work on that word wheel but ended up doing stuff offline today.

Mary, have fun with the sunflowers! They're my favorite flower.

Sarah, LOL@ your stealth mission check-in! Hope you had a good day!

I read a book on a whim tonight. I'm super tired so I don't know if it fits the challenge or not but I'll post it in the final thread tomorrow, once I figure that out. It was a book about the Zodiac killer from San Fransisco in the '60s.

message 1239: by Sarah (last edited Aug 02, 2013 11:45PM) (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments So for any of those who want to do a book read for The Orphan Master's Son - mid October works best for me. Does this work for everybody.
Nancy - would love to do this with u too. Would this be O.K instead of September?

message 1240: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments Mid October huh? Right in the middle of the read-a-thon, you guys are killing me *kidding*

OK, let me find my RaT scratch (not easy when using a 7" tablet) and I'll get back to you.

message 1241: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments How does October 21th works for everyone? Is a Monday. We can also start in the 20th, if you prefer. Or is it to late?

message 1242: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments Works for me - what read-a-thon?

message 1243: by Sonia (new)

Sonia (darktalynn) | 11599 comments October BAP challenge will be a read-a-thon. I'm still working on how to make it doable for all team members, so, too soon to talk about it
*giggles*

message 1244: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments Well I would also do November but I have two other books reads. But I will squeeze this book in anytime after September.

message 1245: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments So I was doing all right about the dog dying and then this morning I woke up and just started crying. I'm glad we're going out for the day.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Just remembered we will be in Eastern Europe for three weeks beginning on October 12th. If the places where we are staying have Wi Fi, I can read he book before and try to answer the questions when I have a chance.

message 1248: by Nichole (new)

Nichole | 980 comments Teresa, I posted a "make-up" picture for you in the LJB thread :) *hehe, I posted this in the wrong thread the first time, needs more coffe!*

message 1249: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments It looks like we were correct on #34 for the Word Wheel, I just e-mailed our answers into Captain Cupcake. Go team!

For Orphan Master's Son, I'm good anytime so long as it's after August. You ladies hash out a date that works and I'll be there! :)

I finally finished slogging through A Voyage Long and Strange: Rediscovering the New World last night. I haven't read a book that I rated that poorly in a few months, so I'm pretty bummed about it right now, lol.

I'm going to finish up Ice Land today and have a few short reads to squeeze in this month. I'm also planning on reading the Sirantha Jax series this month, I've read Grimspace before and it was a quick read so I'm hopefully I'll squeeze them in nicely.

message 1250: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments What about November - second week? No trip to Eastern Europe - no read a thon. I know that may seem far away but I personally have a never ending reading pile and can read plenty until then.
