Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments So with Holly (QC) still in the game we are actually at 1355 for our goal and don't need another player unless someone else drops out or reduces their goal. New Mommy Holly hasn't checked in to the new tracker yet but I'm sure she will. She only had 6 books read so it's not dropping us down by much and we can always use the old tracker for the next update. We're at 442 without her books on the new tracker. Go team!

message 952: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Got a message from the other Holly saying she moved herself over and might up her goal. But she's not on the new tracker. So I messaged her back. She may have made an error somewhere when logging herself into the new one.

But yay! We have heard from all our active players and we will not have an accurate tracker which will hopefully stay that way.

CountessPaige de Quantity | 150 comments Mary:HDLS - It looks like Holly has placed herself on Magenta Mix-Up's team. She was on their tracker as of an hour ago.

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Yay! Glad everyone made it to the new tracker! :)

I've been a bit quiet lately because things are crazy at work. I work for a company that help seniors downsize, pack and relocate to senior living communities. It's a very rewarding job but it's also very physical. We try to keep our days to 4-5 hours because of this, but lately we've been stretched thin and are doing mostly 7-8 hour days. I am exhausted. Monday and Tuesday I came home and took 3 hour naps. :s

I've also been reading a bunch of chunksters recently so I haven't finished too many books. I'm working on The Wise Man's Fear right now for the buddy read, but after I finish it I'm going to concentrate on some smaller quicker reads!

message 960: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I haven't had my normal reading time at work. Business is actually really slow but with Mom's health problems, I can doing her job too. I can listen to an audiobook while I file, put in sales orders and do billing. But I need to concentrate when I do bookkeeping & product costing and stuff like that. But it's good that she's finally having me take over some of this stuff. I've been asking for more responsibility for 2 years.

message 961: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments We went to see RIPD tonight which we really liked. Got dinner at Uno's. But I'm going to read now while I watch Master Chef.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments We went to see Despicable Me 2 today. The dark, cool theater really helped my headache/sinuses but ever since we came home I just haven't felt up to reading. I think I'm going to veg out to some TV for the night. Maybe I'll feel better in the morning.

message 963: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments We saw that on Saturday. Loved it. Wed is $5 movie night at our theater so that's usually the only time we go. It's the only reason we see so many movies.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Ok let's do a question of the day.

For Thursday, or tonight if anyone comes on:

What is your favorite animated movie of all time?

I think mine would have to be Sleeping Beauty. It's the first one I remember seeing. My dad took me. Also I had really long blonde hair and I liked to picture myself as Aurora.

message 968: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Oh, yes. Loved Sleeping Beauty.

message 969: by Riya (new)

Riya Since we're all sharing opinions. My favorite animated movie of all time: The Lion king :D My least favorite: Sleeping Beauty....

message 970: by Riya (new)

Riya And I LOVE the minions movie posters- I'm going to see Despicable ME 2 tomorrow :D

message 971: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Favorite animated ~ hard one, love the early 90s stretch of Disney movies. If I HAD to pick one, I'd say Aladdin but Lion King and Beauty and the Beast are strong runners up.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Aladdin is probably my favorite Disney movie. I saw it with my sister about 5 or 6 times at the $1 theater. It is the movie that made me no longer despise Robin Williams, but I still am not that crazy about him in movies.

Mine has stayed The Little Mermaid and I'm not ashamed to admit I know most of the dialogue and all the songs! Beauty and Beast definitely close second :)

message 976: by Riya (new)

Riya Definitely- Beauty and the Beast was epic!!!! I also love Mulan, Pocahontas, and Despicable Me of course :) And you can't go wrong with Monsters Inc or Monsters University. I think that's it for my animated movie list....for now :)

message 977: by Lisa Kay (last edited Jul 24, 2013 09:22PM) (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Well, even though it is only partially animated, I loved Enchanted.

Enchanted was every Disney Princess movie!

Have you watched Howl's Moving Castle? Great film and the book is a good read too :)

message 981: by Lisa Kay (last edited Jul 24, 2013 09:42PM) (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments No, but I've heard it is really, really good. I'll have to do a search for it. I actually borrowed the audio from the library once, but never listened to it.

Howl's Moving Castle (Howl's Moving Castle, #1) by Diana Wynne Jones

message 982: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments The book is awesome :) I haven't watched the movie though.

message 983: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Good to know you approve, Vi, as I usually like the same things you do. You have such great taste. ☺

message 984: by Riya (new)

Riya I read the book when I was like 10, I thought it was okay. Just not my style. Didn't even know there was a movie!

I saw the movie at an outdoor cinema one year and just loved it so I bought the DVD :)

Sarah | 3273 comments Oh I will post something. Worked my 12 hour shift in the ER today and I am nothing but exhausted. Gotta get my munchkin to get to sleep and need to sleep. Wake up to do it all again tomorrow. Too tired to read or think.

message 987: by Sarah (last edited Jul 24, 2013 10:29PM) (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments But on a brighter note I ran into Goodwill quickly on the way home looking to see if I could find a copy of The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides , no luck... But I did find all these other books I have really been wanting - East of Eden by John Steinbeck 2666 (Part 2 The Part About Amalfitano) by Roberto Bolaño True History of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey The Sound and the Fury The Corrected Text by William Faulkner Tracks by Louise Erdrich The Edible Woman by Margaret Atwood and Oryx and Crake (MaddAddam Trilogy, #1) by Margaret Atwood all for a grand total of 24 bucks. What a steal and some of these are considered great books, I think some may be on the 1001 list of books to read before you die.

message 988: by Riya (last edited Jul 24, 2013 10:32PM) (new)

Riya That's a great deal!!! I've noticed East of Eden's on there- have you read any of Steinbeck's other books?

message 989: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments I read The Grapes of Wrath in high school and remember not liking it at the time - but it is several people's favorite read of all time. But so is East of Eden. A lot of my initial book list started from asking people what their best book of all time ever was - East of Eden kept popping up.

message 990: by Riya (new)

Riya You'll have to tell me what it's like, because I read Of Mice and Men and I didn't like it.

message 991: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments Oh yes - I also read Of Mice and Men in high school and I loved it. I am probably not going to get to East of Eden for a long time. It is going on my ever growing bookshelf. My goal next year is to tackle my personal library. Maybe I will make this one of those books. But I also want to read a lot of books published this year and new books that come out that end up as group reads that I want to read. So many books - so little time.

message 992: by Riya (new)

Riya The ending of it jsut didn't work with me. And yeah I know what you mean- my to read pile grows so much everyday. That's so true, I wish I had more time for books!!

I finished Hour Game (Sean King & Michelle Maxwell, #2) by David Baldacci and I am still reading The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman and Bared to You (Crossfire, #1) by Sylvia Day . Will start The Lunatic Cafe (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #4) by Laurell K. Hamilton .

I have taught Of Mice and Men for the last 25 years and each time I read it, I find something new to think about or discuss. To me that is the mark of a great book or classic. That it is timeless and tells a story for the ages.

How would you define a classic book?

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I continue to read The English Girl (Gabriel Allon, #13) by Daniel Silva and began listening to Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver but I'm not sure about Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver . I used to love Kingsolver but lately I don't always know where she is headed.

I also took out a slew of books last night for various challenges. The titles include:

Elegy for Eddie (Maisie Dobbs #9) by Jacqueline Winspear

The Apple Orchard (Bella Vista, #1) by Susan Wiggs

The Yonahlossee Riding Camp for Girls by Anton DiSclafani

Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan

I can't remember if I've seen it. I'm pretty sure I have. I need to see if we own it to recall. If we own it, I've watched it but only once. I should set up a viewing marathon of those movies with my son soon.

Also: Love Mulan, too!
