I wouldn't mind picking a week to read short-ish books (under 300 or even 200 pages) for a little friendly competition and to help our numbers. I would prefer a week in August though.

Riya Sarah- How were the Game of Thrones ones? I've really been meaning to try those since the TV show has become such a big thing. I also just got A Thousand Splendid Suns and Gone Girl. Have you read the Kite Runner before? That's one of my all time favorite books. My friend tried Jane Eyre and she thought it was quite dull...Anyways, that makes sense. Most of my books are around the same length (although they're mostly YA). When it comes to adult books I'm a HUGE Khaled Hosseini and Dan Brown fan. Oh and I LOVE Michael Crichton's books. Those are seriously amazing.

Sarah | 3273 comments I have not read The Kite Runner - plan to. I loved his new book And the Mountains Echoed. The Song of Ice and Fire are my top books I have ever read. Period! Did not love Jane Eyre - but I try to read the great classics. I loved Les Miserable - the unabridged version - but what a challenge. Also one of my favorite books ever. Another great classic is The Count of Monte Cristo.

I didn't love Gone Girl but a lot of people love this book.

Karsyn (imzadi) Yup, I was sleeping 55 minutes ago. :) Weird dream where people were putting down and underestimating my husband and I was just slapping them down (verbally) and my hubby was grinning at me. Can't wait til I can tell him about it when he gets home from work. :)

Started my new book, decided to go with the next in the series that are longer. 493 on this one, so I don't know that I'll get it done by tomorrow night. Maybe I'll slip a short erotica in today.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Lisa Kay wrote: "So, Nancy, you like Daniel Silva? Is he one of your favorites?"

I love Daniel Silva's books. Although I'm not much of mystery, spy or thriller books there are a couple of authors I really love like Daniel Silva, Harlan Coben and the late Robert Ludlum. I first read Silva's books after buying his first two books at a used store when I read that his main character was an Israeli spy and art restorer. The blurb had me at Israeli. And because much of these books take place in Israel which we have visited several times, when I read about this country it is as if I am there.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) From a previous message - "Going to the Berkshires to spend the weekend with friends so I'm not sure how much reading time I will have but there's always next week."

Best laid plans cause at the last minute things changed and we are here in NJ. More time for reading and being with all of my reading friends via the computer.

Ah! Thanks, Nancy. I've been meaning to try DS & HC. I've read RL, so that gives me an idea.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Not sure where I left off here mentioning what I read but I did add the following titles in the last two days -

The Ocean at the End of the Lane which was 192 pages so will count here and
First Sight: A Novel which had 384 pages

I now have read a total of 85 books for 2013 and will most likely increase after I read another 10 books.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Working on my plan to finish up already started books. Just finished In Cold Blood on audio while doing yardwork for mom and then at my house. Then vacuuming and mopping the floor. I'm beat and done for the day.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments I was definitely sleeping when you posted that graphic, Mary! I originally woke up at 6, after only 5 hours of sleep so I'm glad I fell back to sleep because I needed it. I had a horrible dream, though. I had a dream that my son (he's 12) was missing and in his place, I received a toddler boy who was supposed to be him but didn't look that much like him and I was worried that he wouldn't have the same easy-going nature my son had. I think someone had kidnapped my son and gave me this toddler to make me feel better (??) but I was turned inside out, looking for my son and fearing that I would never see him again, wondering if he was being harmed. Ugh, it was horrible. Felt real, too. Thankfully, I woke up and I heard my son's sweet sing-song voice in the other room, chatting away with his dad. I hate dreams like that.

Guess I'm a bit of a downer this morning, eep! I work in 90 minutes and I'm not ready mentally. I feel like having a tantrum, LOL. "I don't wanna go! I wanna stay home and read!" hehe. It's a very short shift so I'll be fine, I just like to whine sometimes.

Have a good one, everyone!

message 863: by Vicky (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments I was also still sleeping! I slept until 11 today, mostly because I was up until 4am listening to The Wise Man's Fear.

For once I'm working a full week next week (yay), so I need to try not to stay up that late tonight or I'll be a mess trying to get to sleep Sunday night in time to get to work in the morning, yikes!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Ugh. Hate nightmares like that, Teresa.

message 865: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I have a recurring dream where my daughter is a toddler again but for some reason in my dream I have forgotten that I had her and hadn't been taking care of her. Not sure where that comes from. She's 15 now and I still have the dream every so often.

I also have a recurring dream where I have 10 very large dogs instead of 2 large dogs.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments We are up to 428 books. Although possibly less if the latest possible inactive turns out to indeed be inactive.

You definitely should read it. It was such a well told story. I really like his writing style and I can't wait to try And the Mountains Echoed. Awesome! Do you watch the show? I don't, but I know pretty much everyone else does. Yeah I also read classics and some are quite great. Hemingway and Dickens are both pretty good. And I LOVE Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, and Edgar Allan Poe.

Awww- we're doing so good, I really hope that we don't have any more inactive players :( By the way, are we going to a new tracker?

message 869: by Mary X (last edited Jul 20, 2013 03:51PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I asked for one but have not heard anything more about it yet. There's no hurry, I just don't like seeing the inflated number.

message 870: by Riya (last edited Jul 20, 2013 03:56PM) (new)

Riya Okay, I bet we'll get one soon then- I was just checking up! And yeah, it's annoying having to remember to deduct the books whenever I look at our total.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Can't sleep! I was on the couch reading and watching stuff on Netflix and I fell asleep but then one of my cats woke me up so I just sat on the couch trying to sleep again. Well, of course I looked at the window near my front door to see if the porch light was on (it's motion sensored) and it was so of course I then became sleepy-paranoid - you know, where it's so late and you're so tired that your mind just starts thinking the most wild, irrational thoughts? Yep, that's me. Usually, the light is just set off by strays running around but in my mind it's an axe-wielding peeping tom who is about to bust down my door any second now. Ugh. I hate that! So, that made me unable to sleep and now here I am. Nobody is on, though, LOL. The light is out now, which means nobody is lurking around (unless they went to the back yard! eep) so I'm probably going to fall back to sleep but I'll do it out of sight of the window, just like all the other times I'm oblivious to that light's doings while we sleep.

Sarah | 3273 comments Mmmmmmm. Sunday brunch look good. Good Morning everybody. 6 O'clock a.m. here in Portland, OR. My three year old woke up and whined for a little while before going back to sleep - yes I still have my daughter in my bed - so I think I will do the same. Zzzzzzzz...

message 874: by ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (last edited Jul 21, 2013 06:41AM) (new)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Oh, I love Sunday Brunch!!! I'm drinking coffee with chocolate and caramel creamer and eating a Hostess cupcake for breakfast, LOL. I'd rather have that picture but I don't feel like cooking.

Also, no axe-wielding murderers came after me last night, so here I am! I finally got about 3 hours of sleep but I'll just nap later if I need to. I work in 90 minutes.

Sarah, hope you got some sleep! We co-slept for a few years with our son. Made him feel very secure and he's a well-adjusted 12-year-old, doing just fine sleeping on his own. (I really hated being told that he'd "never" sleep on his own if we co-slept. Every child is different!)

message 875: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments Yeah. I laugh at that. Childhood is so fleeting, I am gonna cuddle my baby as long as she will let me - even at 12. Plus Daddy works graveyard shift 5 to 6 nights a week. So it is either her or alone and we have plenty of room in the king size bed. I never even got a crib. And clearly I have yet to go back to sleep.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Well, maybe you'll get a nap later!

I still cuddle with my son. I'm impressed he lets me so I will take advantage of it for as long as he will allow. He's very sweet and even though he can be shy around his friends, behind closed doors he's quite unabashed in his affection.

message 877: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments My 15 yr old daughter still sleeps with me sometimes. Rarely at this point but sometimes. We still cuddle on the couch.

Sarah | 3273 comments We love our babies!

message 879: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments This is interesting. I'm from India and as far as I remember, my parents, brother and I used to sleep together always. When our grandmother (grandfather passed away when I was still a baby) was visiting, we used to sleep with her. She used to tell us the best bed time stories.

Even now if I'm visiting alone (w/o hubby), I either sleep with my grandmother or my mother. We gossip till we fall asleep.

message 880: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments Yeah I think a lot of cultures co-sleep with family.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Awww, I loved sleeping with my sister and grandma as I was growing up, when we spent the night at Grandma's.

Yes, a lot of cultures co-sleep with family but for some reason, much of the U. S. has an issue with it and they have this crazy idea that it somehow screws up a child's ability to sleep on their own in the future. To me, it instills a sense of security in the child. I loved it when I got to sleep with my mom, always made me feel safe and loved.

message 882: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments We are snuggled on the couch right now watching a documentary on Yellowstone National Park. But I need to get dressed and go grocery shopping.

Made a breakfast pizza this morning. Don't normally like the run the oven in the summer but it's much cooler today than it has been and I was working with limited supplies. No bread for toast, no milk for pancakes or cereal. But I had eggs, zucchini, bell peppers, pepper jack cheese & salsa. Came out really good.

Thanks! I suppose there is always tonight, haha.

I wouldn't mind if it was say, Hugh Jackman or someone hot and famous, lol. Of course, I hope he's putting the axe to better use than just my door, like chopping wood so I can watch.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments So after deducting our 3 inactive players we are at 429 books for this weeks update. That doesn't include Melissa, Holly (QC) or Alexia. It still includes Barbara who will hopefully respond that she's just been busy. It hasn't been a week since she was messaged. If we have to drop Barbara too, we might end up going down a spot although she only has 15 books so not a huge drop.

message 888: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments I finished a book this morning and earlier in the week. Hopefully the one today made it in. I always add to my shelf as soon as I finish. It was Bastard Out of Carolina. OMG - what an intense and emotionally draining book. Really well done. The story of a very dysfunctional family and a portrayal of the cycle of abuse in families from generation to generation.

message 889: by Sarah (last edited Jul 21, 2013 04:39PM) (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments Gonna start Tell the Wolves I'm Home. I hope it is a little more uplifting. I have been waiting to read this and am excited . It was nominated one of the best books of 2012 from various whatever they would be called? - reader award groups. I also want to join the BOM read starting tomorrow for The Dovekeepers - I just bought the book last week at Powell's Books. Hopefully I can add these as finished by the end of the week. Then gonna start The Light Between Oceans - but don't wanna finish this until August for the octagon challenge. Maybe I could squeeze one more in this month - The Orchid House - but if not I will have to drop it for now. I have enough scheduled for August between all my BR and BOM for various groups.

message 890: by Riya (new)

Riya Not sure if any of you have seen the Sunday update, but we're still in 7th :D So that's great! We just need to pick up the pace a bit and we can definitely climb the ladder! Also, because of so many inactive members :( we're still not a full team, which means we can expect a new member to be added sometime- so even more books to add each week! Hopefully we'll get our last team member or so soon!

message 891: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I just looked for the updated and it didn't show the rankings. Will have to look around.

I was more thinking we might drop one if we have to remove Barbara next week. She's still in our totals.

message 892: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Our new tracker has been created. Just waiting for a response to my question of whether or not we should all stay signed into the old one when we move to the new one. I think we should incase it takes a while for everyone to move over. Then we have the old one for the next update.

message 893: by Mary X (last edited Jul 22, 2013 06:02AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Got the word already. Mods say to keep yourself in the old one but sign up for the new one. They can delete the whole challenge once we are all move over.

New-Pewter-Blue-Tracker The bookshelf name has to be exact so it's best to just copy/paste your shelf name into the tracker.

eta: I will be sending this in a message later to anyone who hasn't yet seen this post and moved over.
