Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I think they mean when you actually change it on your personal tracker they will change the master spreadsheet with all the players. I'll update the team spreadsheet.

When you change it here - on the Pewter Blue's Home Page Challenge. All you have to do is update. You do NOT have to reenter your bookshelf name. In fact, we suggest you don't, as most people mess it up.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Oh duh! I totally forgot about changing it there, LOL!!! See? I knew I was being airheaded, haha. Thanks! Will change it in a moment.

Read the first chapter of the Elizabeth Adler book and decided I'm not the mood to read this book now. One could say that I am in between books cause I don't really know what to read right now.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Sometimes I need a day or two off from reading. Usually if I catch up on movies I missed or shows I have TIVO'd, they put me in the mood for a specific genre.

message 756: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments So I think the main reason I am behind is that I have too many books started and then put aside. So I am making myself take them one at a time and finish them up. Was alone at work this afternoon and had my Kindle finish reading me Proud Wolf's Woman. Now putting my efforts into Where Shadows Dance.

Proud Wolf's Woman by Karen Kay Where Shadows Dance (Sebastian St. Cyr, #6) by C.S. Harris

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments What does everyone think about getting another team to do some sort of inter-team challenge going? Not sure how or what or with whom. Maybe a pages read, audiobook, non-fiction or something.

Just a thought.

Hey Mary,
At LJB we are doing a challenge with Moonstone at the moment (who are kicking our butt!) which is just for first to hit 100 books between July 8-21.
It is fun, but I think it would also be nice to do an inter-team challenge maybe based on reaching a certain number of pages in a timeframe? That way it doesn't disadvantage those who like to read larger books and doesn't interfere with existing mini-challenges. Maybe throw something out in the captain's thread?

message 760: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Which captains thread? I like the page count idea for that reason. I was thinking for September after the August challenge is over. We should still be going then considering the first place team is only at just over 500 books.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments I love inter-team challenges. I like the pages read thing. Like Karen said, the people who enjoy chunksters would not be at a disadvantage in that case.

message 762: by ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (last edited Jul 15, 2013 07:36PM) (new)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Maybe she meant the Captain's group? There's a thread somewhere over there where you can toss out ideas or something..i think. I can't recall just now, but the Captain's group is a good place to put out feelers. Or even just asking in every group's thread, or if you have a few friends in specific groups you could just ask those groups.

I'm friendly with a few people from both Mango Tango and Leather Jacket Black. I could ask those groups, if you wanted (once we figure out what our challenge would be and round-a-bout when it would take place). Other PBers might have friends in other groups they could ask...could be a group effort invite!

I think I have settled on reading The Wheel of Time by Susan Howatch. I have owned this book for so long the pages are beginning to turn yellow. But just today Daniel Silva's newest book featuring Gabriel Allon was downloaded to my I PAD and I am itching to read this books so I wonder what I will be reading tomorrow.

This reminded me of days when I simply take off and do nothing but stay in the house. Well, to some I may be doing nothing but to me I do lots - like catch up on my book journal, file cards, tv shows and movies I've been meaning to watch and writing reviews of recently read books.

This morning I woke extra early to finish off my notes for the book club I am leading tonight. Our group read Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom and there is so much meat to this book that I have spent an inordinate amount of time collecting notes on the author, favorite quotes from the book and writing discussion questions. I really enjoyed doing this and now hope other members participate in this discussion.

At another area, I am in a 1,000,000 page challenge. Members of one of these sub challenges are doing it on their own calculating how much they read each month, year etc. I have been doing this since mid 2011 and on. Another group is doing it all together to see how soon they all can reach 1,000,000 pages.

message 769: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I know one of the groups I'm in is doing a million pages challenge and I'm blanking on which one right now. I always forget to add my books to the page count.

I'll post something over in the Captain's group. I wanted to post here to see if there was interest within the team first.

message 770: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I think I'm also in that group. Wasn't it in commemoration of 1,000 members joining the Nothing But Reading Challenges. I think that idea was to read a large book - maybe over 1,000 pages although the ones I chose, The Wheel of Fortune. is only 968 pages according to Amazon.

Which brings up another pet peeve of mine. I really dislike when the number of pages isn't specified on my Kindle but rather they give a percentage of what you've read or in the case of the above mentioned book they are telling me I have read 2% or 337 out of 21,598.

message 771: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments No this I think is a romance themed group and it's "blank groups 2nd million pages" or something like that. Romance Readers Reading Challenges group, maybe? There's anotehr group doing a 2013-in-2013 challenge which is why I named my shelf that and I'm using it for this and that group.

I know I miss the page numers when they don't show them on Kindle books. Some will at least show you if you mit the menu button but some will just show a location.

message 772: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Yes, Mary: HDLS, it is RRRC. I'm in that one. It is fun. We are almost to our second million; we'll get there way before the end of the year. (Unlike our first million.)

message 773: by Vicky (last edited Jul 16, 2013 09:36AM) (new)

Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments I'm definitely up for an inter-team challenge, friendly competition is always fun! :) I think the mods said they were planning another RAT for September, so we may want to wait to see when they're planning that so we aren't doing them both at the same time.

I've been doing some of my own calculations to project when teams will finish including any outstanding cupcakes teams could turn. If Moonstone keeps up their current rate of reading (36 per week) we need to read 41 books a week to finish before them. Right now our average books per week is 29, but we've read 41, 34 and 35 books per week in the last three weeks, so it's definitely doable!

What does everyone think of picking a week (maybe the last week in July so we can do it before the August challenge?), setting a big goal for the team and everyone reading short-ish books. If I look at everyone's top weeks, I think we can definitely hit 60 books in one week, especially if we all stick to shorter books. It would move our projected finish date up about 5 weeks and could bump us up another 2 places depending on what other teams are reading then. Plus it would be a good way for everyone to knock a good chunk of books of their to read list! It wouldn't have to be too serious, if we make the goal, that's awesome and if we don't it will still be a good push.

message 775: by Mary X (last edited Jul 16, 2013 10:43AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I love the idea of a short books based challenge. But I think we should do that ourselves. It's why I put it in the August challenge to encourage people to knock out some of their shorter TBR books.

message 776: by ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (last edited Jul 16, 2013 11:00AM) (new)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments I think Vicky meant that we'd do the shorter books ourselves, I don't think that was for the inter-team challenge. At least, going by her wording, that's what I interpreted.

I can't really guarantee I will be able to read shorter books other than my Nora Roberts week and anything I might purposefully look for for our August challenge, but we'll see!

I think the inter-team challenge could be a fun addition to our August challenge because people may be attempting to read more pages to fit the different categories or themes of their team's personal challenges. What better time to try to 'beat' (in friendliness!) an "opponent" than when you are most motivated to read, read, read, I say! By 'addition', what I mean is, I wouldn't mind doing it at that time for the reason stated, I don't mean making it a formal addition to our August challenge. People could just track pages read when they add their books to the "Finished" thread in the August challenge.

message 779: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments It's short for Harry Dresden's Love Slave which I added to my name because there's so many Mary's in my groups.

message 780: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Thanks Mary - going over to look for Romance Readers Reading Challenges. But is this just for romance books?

message 781: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Not necessarily. Lots of romance fans on the group but I use non-romance books for my challenges over there unless it's specifically a romance themed challenge.

message 782: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Looked under the challenge index but didn't see this heading in either of the posts.

Also had does one vote in the poll. I see a synopsis of each book but no poll unless I'm not looking in the right place.

message 783: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments Nancy, did you mean the monthly BOM? Voting period is closed for this month. The one for next month should be up soon.

And as Mary said, you can use any genre book in the challenges. I use mostly fantasy when I am in that phase.

message 784: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1758 comments And the second Million Pages should be under Fun & Games. IIRC, it was started by Lisa Kay.

message 785: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) No I don't think it was BOM - one poll group has Coraline as one of the books, the other poll group has The Storyteller. It says the voting begins on July 15th and ends July 31st.

Ok I don't read romance but do read contemporary lit and non fiction so I will use any book.

I will look under Fun and Games but again don't know what IIRC stands for. I find sometimes that older members here assume that everyone knows what the initials stand for but newcomers don't and become confused.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Nancy, are you talking about voting in the polls for THIS group? I think Vi thought you meant the Romance Readers Reading Challenges group since that was the group you guys had been discussing, with regards to the million pages and if books have to be in the romance genre.

Anyway, to vote in the polls, you just click one of the books that is listed with all of the descriptions of the books. That's how you cast your vote. And yes, the two current polls in *this* group are for BoM (Books of the Month), one from the YA (Young Adult) category (That's where you saw Coraline) and the other from the "Anything Goes Adult" category, where you saw The Storyteller.

message 789: by Mary X (last edited Jul 16, 2013 07:40PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Nancy the Romance Readers Reading Challenge is a whole separate group. But hmm. not seeing the 2013 in 2013 challenge or the Million pages challenge. I am in a lot of groups and I forget sometimes which challenge is where.

RRRCGroup

TheChallengeFactory Challenge based group that isn't focused on romance.

Challenge group focused on series but not just romance:

SOS:Serious-Overload-of-Series-Group

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Nancy -- I responded to you in one of the polls where you asked about the voting process and not knowing if your vote/"click" was counted. Here is my response, in case you do not go back to the poll to read it:

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) Nancy, if you clicked the book where you see a summary of what the book is about, you have cast your vote. The clicking of the book/summary is the vote casting. You will not know results of the poll until July 31, so the choices to vote for "disappear" and all you can see now are books in a row going across, under the heading, "This Poll is About" -- if you click THOSE books, you will be taken to the GR (Goodreads) page about that book.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) Also: You should see the words, "The Results of This Poll have been hidden until July 31, 2013" in bold. That's another way to know that your vote has been cast. Some groups show on the right side of the screen what books have been voted for and by whom, but this group keeps that information private.

IIRC - this one is new to me. And I thought I knew them all. LOL

Using the link I did find this group and joined. I initially thought this was part of Nothing But Reading Challenges listed under Fun and Games but now realize this is a separate group.

I think I am now into overkill. Many of the groups I am now connected with are similar in their challenges and like hoarding books, I think I'm now into hoarding groups. LOL. But if the Duchess of Windsor said "you can never be too rich or too thin", which translates to me as, "You can never have enough books or read enough", maybe one can't have enough book groups either."

Thanks to all who posted with directions to the various websites.

I am glad that I was able to figure this out but unless I missed the direction which I would have assumed would be at the top of the poll, for a newbie there are no instructions as to what to do. In my other groups the way to vote in a poll along with all information about challenges is listed in the first message or at the top of each poll. I know it seems redundant but it takes the guess work out of the challenge or poll. I guess as a former teacher and writer of materials for the SAT's and AP exams, I am a stickler for directions being explicit so that a newcomer understands what is expected.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I have just finished listening to Joyland by Stephen King and gave it my coveted 5 star rating. I loved this book, found it both nostalgic and poignant. This is my 83rd read for the year 2013 with an overall challenge goal of 100 books which I may up in a month or two.

message 797: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Joyland by Stephen King looks good, Nancy. My library has it on CD - yay! Seems like something different from King.

message 798: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) it is a bit different for King and I haven't read one of his books in a real long time. But there is a sense of poignancy in many of his books and novellas. I'm thinking about Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption which was made into one of the best movies IMO as well as The Body which was also made into the movie titled Stand By Me.

message 799: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) There was a time the bigger the book, the more I enjoyed them. I also used to love historical fiction titles and still do but I'm afraid I'm not in the mood for The Wheel of Fortune at this time. It is almost or over 1,000 pages depending on the source where you check for the number of pages. And after several tries over many years and I have read other books by this author which I loved but I must admit that this book never did it for me and may never do it for me. I feel as though I'm giving up and maybe I am but I have books to read before I sleep - with thoughts of Robert Frost - and I just want to move on. Now what will I read with so many new titles downloaded and some also waiting for me at the library.
