Read the first chapter of the Elizabeth Adler book and decided I'm not the mood to read this book now. One could say that I am in between books cause I don't really know what to read right now.

Just a thought.
Hey Mary,
At LJB we are doing a challenge with Moonstone at the moment (who are kicking our butt!) which is just for first to hit 100 books between July 8-21.
It is fun, but I think it would also be nice to do an inter-team challenge maybe based on reaching a certain number of pages in a timeframe? That way it doesn't disadvantage those who like to read larger books and doesn't interfere with existing mini-challenges. Maybe throw something out in the captain's thread?

I'm friendly with a few people from both Mango Tango and Leather Jacket Black. I could ask those groups, if you wanted (once we figure out what our challenge would be and round-a-bout when it would take place). Other PBers might have friends in other groups they could ask...could be a group effort invite!

yes - sorry that is what I meant ;)

I think I have settled on reading The Wheel of Time by Susan Howatch. I have owned this book for so long the pages are beginning to turn yellow. But just today Daniel Silva's newest book featuring Gabriel Allon was downloaded to my I PAD and I am itching to read this books so I wonder what I will be reading tomorrow.

This reminded me of days when I simply take off and do nothing but stay in the house. Well, to some I may be doing nothing but to me I do lots - like catch up on my book journal, file cards, tv shows and movies I've been meaning to watch and writing reviews of recently read books.
This morning I woke extra early to finish off my notes for the book club I am leading tonight. Our group read Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom and there is so much meat to this book that I have spent an inordinate amount of time collecting notes on the author, favorite quotes from the book and writing discussion questions. I really enjoyed doing this and now hope other members participate in this discussion.

I would love to participate in this endeavor.

At another area, I am in a 1,000,000 page challenge. Members of one of these sub challenges are doing it on their own calculating how much they read each month, year etc. I have been doing this since mid 2011 and on. Another group is doing it all together to see how soon they all can reach 1,000,000 pages.

I'll post something over in the Captain's group. I wanted to post here to see if there was interest within the team first.

Which brings up another pet peeve of mine. I really dislike when the number of pages isn't specified on my Kindle but rather they give a percentage of what you've read or in the case of the above mentioned book they are telling me I have read 2% or 337 out of 21,598.

I know I miss the page numers when they don't show them on Kindle books. Some will at least show you if you mit the menu button but some will just show a location.

I've been doing some of my own calculations to project when teams will finish including any outstanding cupcakes teams could turn. If Moonstone keeps up their current rate of reading (36 per week) we need to read 41 books a week to finish before them. Right now our average books per week is 29, but we've read 41, 34 and 35 books per week in the last three weeks, so it's definitely doable!
What does everyone think of picking a week (maybe the last week in July so we can do it before the August challenge?), setting a big goal for the team and everyone reading short-ish books. If I look at everyone's top weeks, I think we can definitely hit 60 books in one week, especially if we all stick to shorter books. It would move our projected finish date up about 5 weeks and could bump us up another 2 places depending on what other teams are reading then. Plus it would be a good way for everyone to knock a good chunk of books of their to read list! It wouldn't have to be too serious, if we make the goal, that's awesome and if we don't it will still be a good push.

I can't really guarantee I will be able to read shorter books other than my Nora Roberts week and anything I might purposefully look for for our August challenge, but we'll see!
I think the inter-team challenge could be a fun addition to our August challenge because people may be attempting to read more pages to fit the different categories or themes of their team's personal challenges. What better time to try to 'beat' (in friendliness!) an "opponent" than when you are most motivated to read, read, read, I say! By 'addition', what I mean is, I wouldn't mind doing it at that time for the reason stated, I don't mean making it a formal addition to our August challenge. People could just track pages read when they add their books to the "Finished" thread in the August challenge.

What is HDLS?

Also had does one vote in the poll. I see a synopsis of each book but no poll unless I'm not looking in the right place.

And as Mary said, you can use any genre book in the challenges. I use mostly fantasy when I am in that phase.

Ok I don't read romance but do read contemporary lit and non fiction so I will use any book.
I will look under Fun and Games but again don't know what IIRC stands for. I find sometimes that older members here assume that everyone knows what the initials stand for but newcomers don't and become confused.

Anyway, to vote in the polls, you just click one of the books that is listed with all of the descriptions of the books. That's how you cast your vote. And yes, the two current polls in *this* group are for BoM (Books of the Month), one from the YA (Young Adult) category (That's where you saw Coraline) and the other from the "Anything Goes Adult" category, where you saw The Storyteller.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) Nancy, if you clicked the book where you see a summary of what the book is about, you have cast your vote. The clicking of the book/summary is the vote casting. You will not know results of the poll until July 31, so the choices to vote for "disappear" and all you can see now are books in a row going across, under the heading, "This Poll is About" -- if you click THOSE books, you will be taken to the GR (Goodreads) page about that book.
ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) Also: You should see the words, "The Results of This Poll have been hidden until July 31, 2013" in bold. That's another way to know that your vote has been cast. Some groups show on the right side of the screen what books have been voted for and by whom, but this group keeps that information private.

You got the link right, Vi. However, the group is called Romance Readers Reading Challenges. Here is the link again, just in case: Fun & Games > FUN: RRRC's 2nd Million Pages.

IIRC - this one is new to me. And I thought I knew them all. LOL
Using the link I did find this group and joined. I initially thought this was part of Nothing But Reading Challenges listed under Fun and Games but now realize this is a separate group.
I think I am now into overkill. Many of the groups I am now connected with are similar in their challenges and like hoarding books, I think I'm now into hoarding groups. LOL. But if the Duchess of Windsor said "you can never be too rich or too thin", which translates to me as, "You can never have enough books or read enough", maybe one can't have enough book groups either."
Thanks to all who posted with directions to the various websites.

I am glad that I was able to figure this out but unless I missed the direction which I would have assumed would be at the top of the poll, for a newbie there are no instructions as to what to do. In my other groups the way to vote in a poll along with all information about challenges is listed in the first message or at the top of each poll. I know it seems redundant but it takes the guess work out of the challenge or poll. I guess as a former teacher and writer of materials for the SAT's and AP exams, I am a stickler for directions being explicit so that a newcomer understands what is expected.
