Vicky (librovert) | 3138 comments Wow that reading rack is great, I just found it on Amazon! haha

This is also pretty clever, though I can see the book flying up quickly and the leash flying off the hook.

I clean when I'm feeling down:

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments LOL @ that cartoon!

One of my favorite things to do when I'm blue is listen to music. It usually lifts my spirits and I often find myself in a funk if I go too long without listening to music at all, other than what is played in the car. Those rides are short and not quite as therapeutic as when I put on a favorite playlist. My standby spirit lifter band is Keane.

Sometimes I veg out on the couch watching some sort of "comfort" show ("Frasier" is a favorite) or a movie that I've watched a million times, something like "9 to 5" or "Clue" usually does the trick. One of my newer favorites is "Pitch Perfect." I love just popping that in while I do other things or when I nap.

I've been in a reading funk and a Goodreads funk (horrible combination!) and posting this has kind of helped!

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Clue is one of my all time favorite movies.

So, my friend must be a little psychic or something. I left work early because it was slow and I was just laying on the couch reading. (I already had my pajamas on a 4:30 in the afternoon). Anyway she calls my cell phone & when I told her I was at home she talked me into meeting her at the mall. We had dinner at Ruby Tuesdays and then did a couple of laps around the mall. I got myself a new camera. Mine is broken and Radio Shack had some on clearance. I had a pomegranate margarita w/dinner. Yum.

Sarah | 3273 comments Mmmmmmm. Pomegranate margarita. Sounds good and on the beach with a not too warm ocean - throw in me looking good in a bikini. Reality - I am sprawled out in front of the fan on my bed with all the windows open this hot ass summer night. Panting in my pajamas. But it at least is cooler than earlier.

message 557: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments It's been hot here too. I have window ACs. When we put the addition on they are going to put in central air. So excited about that.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Mary, I forgot to say this last night... I'm sorry your daughter is away and that you are feeling lonely! How long will she be with her dad? All summer?

message 559: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Just a week. She's 15 so it's not like I'm used to having a little one around anymore. You'd think I'd like the empty house.

My friend and are doing some stuff later in the week so that will help. Nothing we couldn't do with my daughter here but still.

message 560: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Sigh. Of course now that we need a new player no one is asking to sign up for the challenge.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Well, you'll probably appreciate the empty house by the time she's due back, haha.

Why do we need a new player? Did someone leave or become inactive? I thought we had a goal of almost 1350 (something like 1347) but maybe I was looking at a different team's goal.

Well, I kind of tackled my reading funk, I hope. I looked over my reading plan for July and at my library books on the bed and I found a challenge that fits a lot of my books, plus I discovered a bunch of buddy reads this month that sound pretty good so hopefully July will be my month to READ READ READ!!!

@Everyone, be sure to read the NBRC newsletter for July! There are a lot of buddy reads this month, plus the regular Books of the Month. Lots of good options, I think. If you haven't participated in BoM (book of the month) or buddy reads, they can be really fun and quite motivating. I've only played along with one, so far, but I loved it. It's so fun to compare thoughts and perspectives with others from this group.

message 562: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Not to worry, Mary: HDLS, we often get requests after the Newsletter goes out. Of course, it is kind of the holiday week...

message 563: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Teresa, did you see the Stuck in a Rut Challenge just posted today?

message 564: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Melissa no longer wants to participate. I believe her goal was 100 and she had already marked 26 books read.

message 565: by Imke (new)

Imke (immie75) | 1644 comments @Teresa, I also like to do the BoM's and buddy reads and this month I'm planning to join four. I just started the BoM When She Woke by Hillary Jordan , really liking it so far. I'm also going to do the other two BoM's The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1) by Julie Kagawa and The Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman '. Also one buddy read City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare . Next to those I have many other books planned, see lunar madness challenge.

I'm also reading The Host (The Host, #1) by Stephenie Meyer and Thrown by a Curve (Play by Play, #5) by Jaci Burton .

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments @ Lisa Kay -- Yes, indeed, I did see that challenge! I need to sit down and plan out all of my books for the challenges I joined last night and today.

@Mary:HDLS -- I did not know that about Melissa. Bummer! Well, I'm sure we'll get someone else soon enough.

@Imke -- You and those yummy covers for the Play by Play series, LOL!!! I'm definitely reading The Dovekeepers, especially since that was my nomination. I am getting When She Woke from the library today so I may start it tonight.

message 567: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 3273 comments Not doing any of the above books mentioned - but I will be joining the BR for The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern around July 12th.

message 568: by Riya (new)

Riya I'm so excited that so many people are reading the Night Circus- it's such an amazing book!!!!!

message 569: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I read that for my irl book club last year. I think I was the only one that liked it.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Mary: Harry Dresden's Love Slave wrote: "I read that for my irl book club last year. I think I was the only one that liked it."

It seems to be a very polarizing book! I thought the writing was lovely. I could smell the caramel corn just from her description of the carnival at one point. A lot of people don't like her "purple prose", others said the book is too much telling and not enough showing, which is something I don't think I really notice when I read books -- "show, don't tell." I'd like an example of showing vs telling so I know what these people see that I don't, but then again, if I find out maybe it'll make me enjoy favorite books less for all I know! Anyway, glad you enjoyed the book! I will start again for the buddy read.

message 574: by Riya (new)

Riya I definitely agree Teresa. It's considered an adult book, but I've only compared my books with a few other 'young adults'. All of us have loved it with a passion. I'm not sure if that means anything, but I know for a fact that all teens I've talked to have really loved it. I thought the book was a great mixture of everything. It had amazing details, yet the actual plot points were also interesting. The idea was such a unique one! The romance combined with the fantasy completely worked in my opinion.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments That's funny, Riya, because I saw it tagged as 'young adult' somewhere (here, maybe? Possibly some other website, as well) and I just never saw it as YA.

Man, just thinking about the book makes me want some gooey caramel corn so bad!

I agree it is a great book and everyone I know loves it. Personally I preferred Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, but that is c.1000 pages!

Welcome to the team.

message 583: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Alexia asked specifically for our team so Yeah! Did someone recruit her? I just sent her a friend request so I can see her profile & books for updating. I'll add her to our spreadsheet once she's completed her sign up.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Anyone have a favorite painting? My favorites seem to be pretty popular.

Van Gogh's "Cafe Terrace at Night"

Van Gogh's "Starry Night Over The Rhone" (probably my favorite)

Van Gogh's "The Starry Night"

Edvard Munch's "The Scream"

I also like some Salvidor Dali and Escher's optical illusions.

message 587: by Riya (new)

Riya Nice idea!!! I'll definitely add some as soon as I get home!

message 588: by Mary X (last edited Jul 03, 2013 03:24PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I love The Starry Night. I actually did a needlework of that picture. I really should finish it and get it framed.

I saw this painting in Newport RI and fell in love with it. I bought a post card of it:

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Lovely, Teresa & Mary: HDLS.

message 596: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Alexia is all signed up and added 25 books for us. I'm not sure how they will handle Melissa's books. I told her that she has to remover herself if she no longer wants to participate. But if she doesn't then I don't know if we get to keep her books or if the mods can remove them or what. Eventually her %, which is slightly ahead right now, would get behind.

message 597: by Karsyn (new)

Karsyn (imzadi) Mary: Harry Dresden's Love Slave wrote: "Alexia is all signed up and added 25 books for us. I'm not sure how they will handle Melissa's books. I told her that she has to remover herself if she no longer wants to participate. But if she do..."

I still don't know how everything works here, but I should think the ones she read prior to her departure should remain. The group shouldn't lose out on what was already there because she couldn't honor the commitment to the challenge.

Perhaps a compromise would be to keep Melissa's that she did up til the book she did before she stopped posting, then just add Alexia's books from that point on, plus everything else that she does?

Just my thoughts.

message 598: by Riya (new)

Riya Maybe what we can do is make Melissa's goal however many books she actually completed and add the 100 book goal from Alexia's challenge. Then we could probably have a number right around 1350 and we wont be drawn down percentage wise without Melissa's books or anything. Does that make any sense?

message 599: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'm not sure how they do it. But I think it's going to work like we just exchanged Melissa 26/100 for Alexia 25/100. It's pretty much an even swap at the start.

I like Riya's idea that we get to just keep Melissa's 26, her goal is set to 26 and then she's just done with her challenge. But it's not our decision and I don't know what they did with other teams who have lost players.
