Mary: HDLS, how to you feel about being on two Teams, having "duel citizenship"? Cadet Blue and Pewter Blue? You would have to rejoin Cadet Blue, but you could have one bookshelf for both Teams. I think Teresa needs you. ☺

Simply Put: 49 books in 49 days, 7 books from each category per Team. A Team Member may mix and match their books - as many as they want to read, all 49, in fact - from any of the categories.

message 53: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I don't mind but it seems kind of unfair to have my books count twice.

I'm too tired to understand the 7% rules. I'll reread them in the morning. I also contact Michael & Andrea about it since they don't participate in the discussion threads for Pewter Blue. They do active read and mark books read so they might want to do the challenge.

It's 49 books per team right? Not per player? Do we all have to read an equal amount or can a team member who reads more than the others pick up the difference?

Moderators of NBRC | 33523 comments Mod
Your books would only count until we get a replacement player for you. Plus, you would work the 7% Challenge with Teresa, even if you only do three categories for 21 books. Then I would take you off Cadet Blue. (Feeling like a yo-yo yet?)

The challenge is 49 books per Team, 7 books from each Category. A player may elect to read as many or as few as they desire - mix and match.

message 55: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments OK so we are combining our teams for the 7% challenge because we are smaller teams. And any books I read for now will go on Cadet Blue and Pewter Blue just to keeps the teams competitive until more people sign up? I think that's what you are saying.

Correct on all counts.

We are hoping we'll get more people interested in the Tower Teams Reading Challenge with the next newsletter. We usually get a couple. (Members who are NOT "bogus.") If you know of anyone, be sure to invite them.

We also put the Mod Account on Blast Off Bronze, until we can find a replacement for their one "bogus" player.

*snort* Yes, I need Mrs. Dresden because she was my challenge queen and well, because I just plain miss her! This challenge is just feeling kind of over my head right now but I've got a lot of things brewing in there so it's kind of cramped for thought-space, hehe. Summer vacation is fast approaching here and I want to focus on specific books/types of books for my summer reading, plus I've got to make a summer plan for quality time with my son/husband, and I'm working a lot of wacky shifts for well...eternity! Having varied shifts really drains me.

I bet varying shifts do drain you, Teresa. Ugh.

message 60: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'm not sure I even get the challenge yet. But I confess to not reading it word for word. I will tomorrow.

I sent messages to Michael & Andrea who have yet to post in the team threads. But they are marking books read so maybe they'll participate in the challenge.

message 61: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 2143 comments I'm not sure that I completely understand the challenge, but I'm willing to participate. Also posted my willingness in Cadet Blue thread.

Yay, Jackie!

Yes, Mary: HDLS. And remember, you, as Captain, can use any book they post, whether they "officially" participate in the 7% Challenge or not.

message 63: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments 7% Challenge

FYI, I'll be reading 27 books in this period, and I think all of them will fit somewhere. I'm flexible; just let me know.

Cat#1 - 4 books, possibly 5 - or more. I stopped looking after awhile.

Cat#2 - 2 books, possible 3

Cat#3 - got it cover with at least 1 book, all Teams

Cat#4 - got it cover with at least 1 book, all Teams

Cat#5 - I think I'm fine here; I have the hard ones "O" "W" "E" "G" "I"

Cat#6 - one book, at least, not counting the Spell-it-Out, of which I have more. I do have a book with a moon on it; however, I was going to use that for the "buddy read." I also have flowers and green cover covered. If you go with spelling "S.E.V.E.N.   U.P" - I have the "U" covered.

Cat#7 - 5 books, for sure, maybe more.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments If Goodreads lets me stay on long enough I will go actually read the game rules again. I was tired and cranky last night and arguing with my teenage daughter and not gettng them.

message 65: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Well I reread them and I'm still confused. I think I can cover at least one book in every category but it's hard to say w/o knowing what color will be ahead & behind us at the time. I think we are in last place because we have so few members though.

I really hate planning what I'll read that far ahead. But let me see what I was thinking of reading for other challenges and how I can work them into this.

message 66: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments So the plan is for me to run this challenge for Cadet Blue & Pewter Blue? I might be going out of town probably at least once during this time and might not have internet access.

Do I need sing up again for Cadet Blue so that my books count for both until replacements are found?

message 67: by Imke (new)

Imke (immie75) | 1644 comments I can participate in the 7% challenge. I think I can at least read 7 books in that time frame. As this is my first team challenge I'm not sure how to proceed.

message 68: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments When I figure it out myself I'll let you know :-)

Maybe you could do what Lisa Kay did and post a breakdown of what you can read from the different categories. I will try to do that same. I haven't heard from Michael or Andrea but we can use any books they read during that time even if they don't actively participate in the challenge.

I know I can read more than 7 during that time. But I need to plot out how many.

message 69: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments OK this is what is confusing me:

GOAL: Your Team’s mission is to read 49 books. That would be seven books from a choice of seven categories. Yes, you may read 14 books from one category that you adore (essentially doing it twice), and ignore another completely. However, you may NOT read two books from one category and five from another to equal seven. Nor, if you are doing a category twice, read 10 from one and four from another.

I just don't understand this at all. When it says we can read 14 books from one category that we adore that means as a team right? So really we have to confer as a team as to which categories we can fill? But then some can only be filled a certain number of times. What if we don't have enough participating players to cover all the categories?

message 70: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I never do the buddy reads. I just like to read what I feel like reading. So not sure about that requirement for me personally.

message 71: by Imke (new)

Imke (immie75) | 1644 comments What I understood was that for each category we read 7 books. That makes 7 x 7 = 49 books total for the team. If we like one category so much that we want to read 14 books for that category we can skip one category completely (for example category 4).

message 72: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Here's a link to the thread I just created for trackign this challenge. If participants could create a post there for updates, that would really help me out.

Pewter-Blue-7%

message 73: by Imke (new)

Imke (immie75) | 1644 comments The number per category has to be a multiplication of 7. I believe for one of the categories 3 x 7 (21) could be read and 2 categories could be skipped. For the others it is 2 x 7 (14). I thought the 21 was for category 5 but I'm not sure.

message 74: by Imke (new)

Imke (immie75) | 1644 comments Just checked what I said in my last post at:

june-july-challenge-7-solution

REPEATING: Please note that Category #5 is the only category you may repeat three times, and ignore two other categories. All others, you may repeat twice, and choose to ignore one other category.

message 75: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Right but can one member read multiples of one challenge and none of another? Like if I don't want to do a buddy read, can other team members do it multiple times to fill that category?

I might be willing to do a buddy read but I don't normally like to commit to a specific book that far ahead. I'll make a list of some books that I am thinking about reading for other challenges in June and maybe someone will want to do a buddy read for that.

message 76: by Mary X (last edited May 22, 2013 12:58PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I need to confer with Teresa the captain of Cadet Blue and check out their threads since we are combining for this challenge.

I'm hoping Michael and Andrea will actively participate. But neither has been posting in the team thread so they might not.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Mary, I am just about as confused as you on those finer points and no matter how much helpful FAQ I read, I just cannot wrap my brain around the concept at all. I am going to need it broken down to me in very simple terms or something... I don't know. I'm actually stressing out over the fact that I can't figure this out and that's not good, LOL. I don't like not being able to understand something and i usually attack it from different angles until I "get" it but this one just seems to be hitting a wall in my brain. I don't know if it's just because I'm full of thoughts about other things or what.

I'm so confused and the questions I want to ask are just too jumbled. I need to leave this one alone for awhile.

message 78: by Imke (last edited May 22, 2013 01:50PM) (new)

Imke (immie75) | 1644 comments @ message 75: yes as long as we as a team get to 49 books.

If we (Cadet Blue and Pewter Blue) as a team read (for example) 14 books for category #1, 7 for category #2, 7 for category #3, 0 for category #4 (the buddy read category, skipping it), 7 for category #5, 7 for category #6 and 7 for category #7 that makes 49.

The books within a category can be filled by different team members. For example for category #1 I could read 3, you could read 7 and Lisa Kay 4 that covers 14. The other categories could be divided likewise. Maybe make a sign in sheet/thread.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Please, please, please don't stress over it, Teresa. I'll be glad to help it.

We can make it simple, and put a thread over in the "sister group" and reserve seven spots, or we can make it spreadsheet. Really, the challenge is easier than it looks.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I'll be glad to help out.

Remember, we have Lisarenee and the Mod Account doing all those "buddy reads" - so we more than have that covered!

message 83: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments As a plan of attack, we could work on spelling out “T.O.W.E.R. T.E.A.M.S. R.E.A.D.I.N.G. C.H.A.L.L.E.N.G.E.” and get 21 books - for one point - in the first week alone. That's pretty easy.

message 86: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Imke thank you that explanation really helped. Not that I fully get it but it does help me understand it better. I have set up a thread for this and I linked to it in post 72 in this thread.

So if everyone could make a post in that thread as to what they can read for each category, I'll do the same and then I can make a master post to keep track of it all. I'll post a link to it in cadet blue. I'll be easier to keep track if I have everyone in one thread.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments OK I just posted the link in Cadet Blue and renamed the thread to add both team names.

I don't know if I have the energy to go through my books to see what categories I can do. But I'll see if I can put a list together of says they can do what categories.

message 89: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Also while I don't normally do the BOM or Buddy reads. I am not opposed to doing one for this.

OK here's some books I plan on reading very soon if anyone wants to do a buddy read with me: Ghost Story (The Dresden Files, #13) by Jim Butcher Leopard Moon (Moon, #1) by Jeanette Battista Chosen (The Chosen #1) by Denise Grover Swank Exclusively Yours (Kowalski Family, #1) by Shannon Stacey Animal Magnetism (Animal Magnetism, #1) by Jill Shalvis Assassin's Heart (Order of the Sicari, #2) by Monica Burns
Flow The Cultural Story of Menstruation by Elissa Stein

or feel free to look at my to-read-shelf and suggest something and I'll see if I can work it into my other challenges.

message 92: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments OK in the 7% threads for our teams, I started filling in who has said they can read what on the Spell it out challenge.

Please if you want to do the spell it out challenge but can't do anything with the letters left open-post what letters you can do. I know I can do different letters if needed and others might be able to switch as well.

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments OK so Lisa you think we can read all those books in the first week to spell out all those words? I put myself down for 5 books, I don't know if I can read that many in one week. I might but it would be pushing it if work gets busy.

eta: I'm tired and going to bed. I managed to figure out some of what I can read and will check out the other categories tomorrow.

Seven Percent Solution
Cool Text: Logo and Graphics Generator

SOME CHANGES and an EXAMPLE:

The letters “N.B.R.C.” have been added to Category #5.

md, from Cerulean (AKA “Hobbit Blue”) provided this example, which I tweaked a bit to include an example of a series name and to include the newly added letters.
You're not allowed to reuse a letter and since “N.B.R.C.   T.O.W.E.R.   T.E.A.M.S.   R.E.A.D.I.N.G.   C.H.A.L.L.E.N.G.E.” only has two letter 'T's in it that's all your allowed to have. We couldn’t read 7 books that qualified for the letter 'T,' we'd have to pick another letter.

For example:

B - The Bridgertons #4 - Romancing Mister Bridgerton

T - The Da Vinci Code
O - The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje
W - Where'd You Go, Bernadette

T - Tom's Midnight Garden
E - Everything is Illuminated
M - Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

We've completed challenge #5 because we've read 7 books (and used 7 letters).

If we wanted to do this challenge again instead of doing one of the others (say #4) we can do so; but, we can only choose from the letters we haven't used already.

In this example it would be: “N.R.C   E.R.   A.S.   R.E.A.D.I.N.G.   C.H.A.L.L.E.N.G.E.”

We're allowed to do it a 3rd time, but we would only be able to choose from the letters that are remaining.

The letter 'E' appears 5 times so that would mean there could be 5 books that qualify for that letter and the remaining 2 books would have to be another letter.

message 95: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Ok now I'm completely confused again.

I didn't think we could read 7 books with the same letter for it to count. But 1 book for each letter of the spell out words. The words made 21 books for 3 times each. If letters can't be reused then they should be in the spell out more than once. Or am I not getting this.

I'm losing my enthusiasm for this challenge because it seems to be complicated.

message 96: by Lisa Kay (last edited May 23, 2013 09:40AM) (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments You're making this harder than it is, Mary: HDLS.

You only have to read seven books total for this category, if your Team decides to do it. Unless you want to double that, or even triple it, for 21 books.

I think I've got all the duplicate letters:
You may read three "N" books.

You may read three "R" books.

You may read two "C" books.

You may read five "E" books.

You may read two "L" books.

You may read three "A" books.
If you like, I can keep track of this category of the challenge, checking to see if you have used a book elsewhere (and therefore NOT using it). I don't mind. ☺

message 97: by Lisa Kay (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments If five people wanted to read Ecstasy Unveiled (Demonica, #4) by Larissa Ione , you could do so.

message 98: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Well I thought that's what we had said we'd do. So I don't understand why more letters were added. Not that it matters as it gives us more letters to choose from.

I just figured we'd go by your suggestion somewhere to try to do this category 3 times. So I have been filling in who has volunteered to read each letter until we get to 21 plus maybe the extra slots incase someone can't do their letter for some reason. Or I figured I'd fill letters in with books from players who aren't actively participating in the 7% challenge if I can't fit them in anywhere else.

So is the way I have it layed out here useable?

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments Obviously that is not 3 complete turns, that's just the letters people have said they can read. That's 17 books right there so we just need 4 more to get this one done the max of 3 times.
