I read this novel as a preteen in the mid-90's. it's about a young boy ( a slave or servant) named Juan. It's from his perspective, I think. He is fascinated by his master, Diego Velasquez and is with him in Spain while Velasquez is working on his now-famous Las Meninas. I think he starts painting in secret, at some point.

Please help, dying to find this book again!
