Bianca | 5 comments I read this novel as a preteen in the mid-90's. it's about a young boy ( a slave or servant) named Juan. It's from his perspective, I think. He is fascinated by his master, Diego Velasquez and is with him in Spain while Velasquez is working on his now-famous Las Meninas. I think he starts painting in secret, at some point.

Please help, dying to find this book again!

That sure sounds like it. Most editions don't have Las Meninas as the cover art, but this one does.
